No letter "o"!

Now my PC is processing its tasks very slow.

I noticed when I had a Warning Window pop-up that the lowercase "o" was missing everywhere. I used Microsoft spyware detector and it detected something, but then it ignored it and now it isn't detecting anything at all. Symantec and McAfee doesn't detect it either, but there is definitely something there. I am hoping someone will look at my log and let me know what the deal is. I would greatly appreciate anyone's help HJT log to follow:

Hi scotterhog and welcome to the BC malware forums. After reviewing your log I see no signs of viruses or malware at this time. The log is clean.

I'm not sure I completely understand the problem. Are you saying that the 'o' key does not work on your keyboard? If so thn this would indicate a hardware problem, not a software or malware problem. There are 'o' 's everywhere throughout the log that so there is not a problem with displaying them.

Post back with more details and I will try and point you to the proper forum.

The letter "o" key works fine. On the screen, if there is a words that would normally have the letter "o", now it doesn't. For example: the word "No" appears as "N ", or the word "Mode" would appear as "M de". I think I figured out the problem though. I recently hooked up my laptop via wireless router. As soon as I contected, my firewall/anti-virus software picked up that my desktop had the "Backdoor.BlaTrojan". I can't seem to find it on the system itself though. My anti-virus software doesn't pick it up.

Here is what happened, a couple of months back my desktop crashed. It had ME on it and I stupidly didn't have a back-up OS CD. So, I have my laptop and I thought I would temporarily use it's version of XP until I was able to buy a licensed version. I did some research and apparently Microsoft put this "Backdoor.BlaTrojan" in SP2 just for such an infraction. I am afraid re-formatting may be the only option. I will have to buy XP now. Serves me right I guess.

Hey scotterhog. If you had the "Backdoor.BlaTrojan" it doubt that it came from installing XP (unless it was an illegal downloaded copy). Microsoft does not include anything special in any XP CD. Here's how that works. Any XP CD can be used to install XP on a machine. If you do not activate the product with Microsoft within 30 days (I believe but it might be a little longer) then XP simply ceases to function. The Activation code is what you pay for.

If it was an OEM XP CD then the equipment manufacturer can modify it to work specifically with their equipment and that could be the problem. That a screen driver or display driver is specific to the OEM equipment. Even so, if there was a "Backdoor.BlaTrojan" there should be an item listed in the 04 section indicating the trojan.

Let's try this. Download and install ewido security suite. Update the program and then close it.

Start ewido and do the following:
  • Click on the Scanner button.
  • Click on the Complete System Scan button.
  • If anything is found you will be prompted to clean the first infected file found. Choose Clean and put a checkmark in the checkbox for Perform action on all infections and click the Ok button to continue the scan.
  • When the scan is complete close ewido and reboot the computer normally.
OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.
