Hi, Could someone review this log for problems? I already removed quite a bit using AdAwareSE, SpyBot and MS Antispyawre, but there are some suspicious items in the log. Not sure why there are some many entries in the Hosts file.

Hello bobh,

Not sure why there are some many entries in the Hosts file

Those Host file entries were placed there by a virus. All those sites were being blocked from Internet access, so you could not reach sites like Spybot or Pestpatrol. We will delete them all, then rebuild you Hosts file.

Download the HOSTER from here:
http://www.funkytoad.com/download/hoster.zip

Press 'Restore Original Hosts' and press 'OK'
Exit Program.

Note: if you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself. Now you should be able to get to the websites you need to.

*******************************************

Let's empty the temp files:

Download CCleaner and install it. (default location is best).
Select the Windows Tab, Run CCleaner ,(click Run Cleaner (bottom right) then, when it finishes scanning click Exit.)
When you see "Complete" on the top line, it's done. It's very fast.

I recommend that you DO NOT run anything under the Issues Tab and the Applications Tab. To prevent accidently running the Issues Tab and Applicatons tabs, clear all check boxes are under them.

*******************************************

Finally, reboot and post a new Hijackthis log, and tell me how your computer is running.

OK, All done. Here's the latest log. All went well except for starting Internet Explorer to get back on line. It came up but was very slow. It went through the "detecting proxy" which it doesn't normally do. I closed IE and tried again, then it was normal. Probably due to the hosts being restored I guess.
Anyway, here is the latest Hijack This log after all was done.

Hello Bob,

We still have some cleanup to do. Make sure you have all the windows/browsers closed when using Hijackthis or the fixes will not work.
Also, make sure you have Spybot Teamtimer (or any other program tha prevents registry changes) turned off while making fixes with Hijackthis.
You can turn them back on after we have your computer clean.

How to Reboot into Safe Mode
tap F8 key during reboot, until the boot menu appears...use the arrow keys to choose "Safe Mode" from the menu......,then press the "Enter" key

.

Please boot into Safe Mode and select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{1C78AB3F-A857-482e-80C0-3A1E5238A565} - (no file)

OK, One more time. Here is the last log. When I booted in Safe mode, the lines that needed to be deleted were not there. Only when I booted normally could I see them and delete them. I think they're gone now. Anyway, here's the log. Let me know if you see anything else. By the way, after runninmg ccleaner, I checked the temp file directory and there were a few .dat files in there for SALM. Isn't that a malware program?? I'll run some more scans when we're finished here to be sure we're clean

Hello Bob,

The log looks clean!

Please read and follow Groovicus' Guide to Simple PC Security to help keep yourself from becoming infected again.

I checked the temp file directory and there were a few .dat files in there for SALM. Isn't that a malware program??

To be sure you are malware free run the following scans.

***************************************************

Please download, update and run (one at a time of course!)
Spybot 1.4 and Adaware SE 1.06.r1

Fix whatever they suggest.

***************************************************

If you need help running these tools, here are some helpful tutorials.
Spybot Tutorial
Adaware SE Tutorial

***************************************************

Be sure to run Adaware SE with a Full Scan in the Safe Mode.

How to Reboot into Safe Mode
tap F8 key during reboot, until the boot menu appears...use the arrow keys to choose "Safe Mode" from the menu......,then press the "Enter" key.

The following explains how to set Ad-aware's settings to perform a "Full Scan."

In Ad-aware click the Gear to go to the Settings area.

The following items should be on a green check, not on a red X.

Under the Scanning button:
Scan within archives
Under Memory & Registry, Check EVERYTHING
In Check Drives & Folders, make sure all of your hard drives are selected

Under the Advanced button, check ALL under Log detail level.

Under the Tweak button...

Some of these may not be an available option, depending on your version of Ad-aware and your version of Windows. Do not be concerned if you cannot select a certain item.

In Scanning Engine:
Unload recognized processes during scanning
Include info about ignored objects in logfile, if detected in scan
Include basic Ad-aware settings in logfile
Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile
Include used command line parameters in logfile

In Cleaning Engine:
XP/2000: Allow unloading explorer to unload shell extensions prior to deletion
Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
UNCHECK: Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion

Click Proceed to save these settings. When you would like to perform a "Full Scan," switch the scan mode from SmartScan to Custom.

***************************************************

Please download, update and run the free A2 (A squared) anti-trojan

Let it fix whatever it wants to. Save the log file by clicking on "Save HTML-Report".

***************************************************

I know you may have anti-virus software, but sometimes its definitions are corrupted due to malware. Online scans are the best resort in this case.
Run this pc through the
Trend Micro Housecall Online virus scanner (Beta)
or
Panda Scan Online virus scanner

Let it fix whatever it wants to. If it cannot delete it, then let me know the name and location and we will delete it manually.
