I can't use Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE). Whenever I log on via my dial-up IP I don't have any problems (I can access any web page); nor do I when I open Netscape after accessing the Web. Whenever I try to use IE I get the following messages at the bottom of the browser page:

"Connecting to site 127.0.0.1" and then the message:
"Downloading picture res://C:\WINNT\system32\shdoclc.dll/pagerror.gif"

After that the page cannot be displayed message along with standard "The page you are looking for is currently unavailable..." message. I get this no matter what IP address is displayed in the location window.

Can anyone help me? The Hijack This log that I ran after running Ad-Aware & Spybot is as follows:

Is there anything that you can see from this log to suggest why I cannot successfully run IE? Any help that you can give me would be GREATLY appreciated.

Your log shows that you are seriously behind on windows updates. It is essential that you update your windows before we continue to help you as the infections could reoccur. Go to http://www.windowsupdate.com and if it asks to install software, let it. Then click on the Scan link and let it do its thing. When its done you will see on your left a section called critical updates. Click on that section and install everything that you can. When it prompts you to reboot, do so. Then repeat this process again until there are no more critical updates listed. Then post a new log.

With this in mind, and that I have scanned my system with AdAware and Spybot; is there anything that you can see that would suggest why I still can't use Microsoft IE? I did try again this morning & it still doesn't work (same issue as in my original posting). Please help me if you can.

Just fix these:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

But none of these would cause IE not to work.

Open IE. Then press the stop button. Then click on Tools, then Internet Options. Then click on on the Connections tab and then click on Lan Settings. Make sure you are not using a proxy. If you are, uncheck the "Use Proxy server" box. And then see if its working

Hello Grinler,

I tried the everything that you advised me to do, but my IE still isn't working. I'm really starting to get frustrated. I've never mentioned this, but I've always suspected that this may have originally caused the problem:

Back just before this all started to happen to me I tried out PeoplePC and their accelerated access. Personally I didn't feel that it was any faster than my current IP, so I cancelled after only a few days. The thing that makes me think that it may be something that PeoplePC's accessing software did to me is that they (PeoplePC) don't have their own interface. They rely on Microsoft IE to actually get onto the Internet. As soon as I uninstalled PeoplePC this problem with IE began.

Is this coincidence or do you think that this may have something to do with my problems?

Again, anything that you can come up with would be greatly appreciated.

Its very possible the software screwed something up but I am not familiar enough with it to give a definitive answer.

You IE was not set to use a proxy server?

No, my copy of IE wasn't set to use a proxy server when I checked it. What now?

Hi Again Grinler,

I'm sorry that I didn't post a new HijackThis log, but my phones have been out off and on (mostly off) for the past 3 weeks or more. I live out in the country & have to rely on dialup internet access.

I ran HijackThis tonight and the latest log is:
