Hi there,

I've been having a serious issue for about a week now which is slowly driving me mad.
My pc keeps auto-rebooting and there's no discernable trigger in my activities.
I disabled automatic reboot on system failure both via BIOS by hitting f8 as my pc loads up and through settings when windows was loaded.

My family hired a "tech-expert" to come solve this issue a few days ago (costing us 37), he checked my error logs and found a few applications had errors and so removed them, some of which were supposedly removed prograsm in the first place.
He said it looked as though it was an application error and was very unlikely to be a hardware issue after checking my disks.

The problem persisted, and at times got worse; it would reboot before bios fully loaded/before I reached the log in screen, when I was at the screen, as windows loaded up, as soon as I started msn or a few minutes after logging on.
It continued when I tried to scan with my internet unplugged.

Sometimes it would subdue and not occur for 6 hours.
After throwing a temper I looked up how to check error logs myself and kept finding one of three errors coinciding with the times of the reboots in system errors (applications only rendered something listed as Kservice which it said it could not bring up a log for).

I've included a HiJackThis log below from 20-30mins ago and error logs which I'll list seperately or grouped for when they occured at the same time as reboots.

Though probably something you will all surmise, I showed quite a few of my logs to my friend and supposedly they proved his theory of it being a trojan/malware, I've tried scanning for malware but can only manage quickscasn as it tends to reboot before I can finish a full computer scan. An extended friend apparently had the ame problem as me fueled by a partially deleted piece of malware, although not directly relevant I thought I'd pass on all information I could.

I tried to log all my errors but my pc rebooted before I could get any sizeable numbers up, so, I'll put those up which are different to the above:

There are a number of different numbered ATxx.job commands listed in there as well.

I hope you can help me come to a solution,
I just spoke to my uncle a second ago who suggested to perform a system restore to a date when I installed a program before this started, or to boot frm teh disk my pc came with and perform a scan with my internet disconnected, although not a part of the problem description I thought I'd include all information I have.

Thank you for your time,

Declan

Hi Ltddtc,

Welcome to BC HijackThis forum. I am farbar. I am going to assist you with your problem.

Please refrain from making any changes to your system (updating Windows, installing applications, removing files, etc.) from now on as it might prolong handling your log and make the job for both of us more difficult.

Please perform all the steps fully and in the order they are written. Tell me if you had any problem without spending much time on it. In case you could not run the fixes you can go to Safe Mode and do the fixes from there. When the tools needed to reboot let them reboot to normal mode:

To start in Safe Mode Using the F8 key:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
  • Log to your usual account.
  • Please go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and uninstall the following program (if present):

    WinFixer2006

  • Please open HiJackThis and choose do a system scan only. Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below (if present):

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&a...&pf=desktop

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, including browsers, so that nothing other than HijackThis is open, then click Fix Checked. A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES. Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

  • Please download the OTM by OldTimer.
    • Save it to your desktop.
    • Please double-click OTM.exe to run it.
    • Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
      :Reg

    • Return to OTM, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
    • Click the red Moveit! button.
    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
    • Close OTM
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

  • Open your Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, first update it, run a "quick scan", let reboot if needed and copy/paste the log to your reply.

Note: The logs are saved by default under the Logs tab. If the log did not automatically open you can obtain the latest log from there.

  • Please post a fresh Hijackthis and tell me how it went and update me about the current condition of your computer.

I had just about finished my reply when another reboot occured, which destroyed the temporary memory I presume as firefox didn't remember my tabs and this reply text was gone, so I'll have to make thsi shorter and try to edit it later in case all my stuff gets deleted again.

It's continued/persisted, some malware was removed and the operations seemed successful, but it rebooted as I was pasting the OTM log, it rebooted again later sometime after I did the malware scan and this morning it just intensified.

I forgot to mention that some of the times it's rebooted before logging in my pc ceases all activity and the power remaisn on.

This morning it got worse, after I logged onto my user accoutn it did as described above. Then, for the next 30-40 times I tried switching it on, it repeated that either on the screen for choosing which mode to run windows, when I tried to boot in safe mode during the file check/start-up and when the windows xp screen loaded.
Very rarely did it reach the accoutn loggin screen, in which case it sitll did the same.
Switching my pc off by holding the power button after these fiascos would prevent me from switchign it back on unless I unplugged the power for a fair few seconds, any less and it still wouldn't switch on.
Eventually it got past the windows xp screen again and had to do a disk check, after 20 odd attempts where it would reboot (but nto stop completely) before or during the indexes check, it finally finished the check.
As I recall it converted some bad links into files, removed an added index file and added some indexes files.

After I finally got on I got a message that my D: drive was nearly at full capacity and the cleanup shows that it's only got old DHK (I forget the full name, it was what was written as the checkign device during the disk checks).

The error reports are all the remoteaccess one or tbpanel failed or "The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
SISAGP
viaagp1"
There are no more atjob error reports.

Oh, I forgot to put this in the new version of this: when I first managed to log on after the disk check, I got rebooted after 20 minutes or so, when I went on msn (I don't have the newest version) I had notices taht all teh peopel I had sharing folders with basically wanted to create them; my folders were gone. It couldn't complete the communication/share reuqets or somethign when I said yes. After I got rebooted, my folders were back. It was after that reboot I started writing my original reply, which got rebooted just as I was pasting the last error report description.

All but the HijackThis logs are from 2-3am, whereas the HijackThis one is from a few seconds ago.

You have done an excellent job:thumbup2:

As you might have noticed the computer is badly infected. Until you are clean please avoid internet activity and frequent rebooting unless is needed to disinfect the computer.

This time we need to run ComboFix. This is a major step. Please be precise and make sure rename and save it on your desktop and let it download and install the Recovery Console.
  • Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3

    * IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Rename it to Ltd.exe
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Information on A/V control HERE)
  • Click the Windows 'Start' button > Select 'Run' - then copy and paste the following bold text into the run box & click OK.

    "%userprofile%\desktop\ltd.exe" /killall

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please copy and paste the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

I did as you said, however, for the first 10 seconds of the scan I still had my internet plugged in, I unplugged it quickly when I noticed, it had deleted one object (wizard companion as I recall) and was removing another when I removed it.

Also, 4od, skype and msn all start-up on loggin, and so they started up as combofix left instructions not to start any programs whilst the log is being made.

Lastly, I didn't copy&paste the text that was in bold because when I opened it there was no start>run option, it just ran automatically.
Edit: I misread, I see now you meant to click start>run from windows, I'll unplug my internet and do exactly that now.
extra Edit: I reran it using the start>run command you gave me with no internet from the beginning, it didn't seem to find anything but I'll post that log at the bottom below the first one now.

The log is below:

Very well done :thumbup2:
You don't need to disconnect from internet when ComboFix runs.

when I opened it there was no start>run option

The Start is on your desktop (left bottom) not in the ComboFix. :)
When you face any problem you can ask. In this case it went good.

I might not be available today any more, see the log tomorrow. Have a nice Saturday.

Close any open browsers.

Open notepad (start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad) and copy/paste the text in the code box below into it:

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Posted Image

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you ( "C:\ComboFix.txt"). Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

I followed your instructions, and so far there's not been a reboot since I first ran combo fix, this is making me optmistic now, thank you or all your help so far!
Have a nice saturday yourself too!

Important edit- it crashed while I was out of the room, well, rebooted with the all operations ceased power still on thing.
I checked the error reports and found that TBPanel failure & remote access were liked again, and in previous occurences I don't recall at around 4pm and 5pm there was another, different error message "Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for the PEVSystemStart service to connect.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp."

This was originally posted at 4:25, and I don't recall any of the auto-reboots occuring just beforehand (it was logged at 4:16) nor do I recall it at 5:11. The same report was relayed at 5:17:23 and 5:17:24 (the timeout one).

Anyway, here's the log:

Instead of errors in the Event Viewer I would like to see the following report. If the computer crashed with BSOD (Blue Screen Of Dead) please do the following: Find and post Minidump file. How to set up Windows to make a dump, where it is saved and how you can find and post it:

:)
  • Go to start > right-click My Computer > Properties > under Advanced tab > under Startup and Recovery section click Settings > (the option Automatically restart should be unchecked and the other two options should be checked) under Write debugging information section > under Small dump directory: the path to the mini dump folder is given. After a crash you should go to that folder and attach the mini dump file inside it. If it is too big you may zip it then attach it to your reply.

Note: %systemroot% usually means Windows so %systemroot%\Minidump is C:\Windows\Minidump

  • When the computer crashes after restart the system makes dump files (Minixxxxx.dmp where x represent a number). I need to see the file to find the cause of the crash.
    • Set Windows to show hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:
How to see hidden files in Windows
    • Use the windows search advanced options:
    • Go to start -> Search -> click All files and folders.
    • Click More advanced options.
    • Put a check mark in the box nest to search system folders, search hidden files and folders and search sub-folders.
    • Make sure Case Sensitive box in not checked.
    • Type mini*.dmp in the upper box and click on search.
  • Zip the file and attach the it to your reply. To attach the file:
    • When you press the ADDREPLY, under the reply window press Browse... show the path to the zip-file on your computer:
    • Highlight the zip-file and click Open then press the green UPLOAD button.
Alternatively, instead of zipping and attaching, you can upload the file to the following site and give me the link to the file:
    http://www.mediafire.com/

Note: The old mini dump files might have already been removed and you have to wait for the next crash and find the file before using cleanup utilities.
+++++++++++++++

:thumbup2:

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image
