Here is the story:
It all started with weird behavior in my PC, Log on screen changed by itself (it asks me for a user and a password which I never set) , some Windows popups and my AV software unable to update itself.
Then after rebooting, the system hung for a while and then it shows only the background ... no desktop. I reboot and it appears after doing nothing different. Now I am unable to access the network, it just hangs doing "Acquiring network address" and it does not acquire anything at all. I tried to re-install AV software and it will not allow me to Install ANY AV software. I tried to set the IP statically, it works but I cant access ANY AV sites and no updates can be made.
2 computers: 1 with a wired connection which is my PC, the one with the issues. Another a Laptop with NO issues at all.
Connection comes into a DSL modem, which then is connected to a switch. This switch connects MY PC (via wire) and the lap top is connected Wireless to the same switch.
I have Windows XP SP3. I was using Bitdefender Free edition (yeah I know .. next time I will pay).
What I have done so far:
AV software unable to do any scan whatsoever.
Malwarebytes detects several infected files and removed them (in normal mode and in Safe mode) .. Sorry no logs.
SuperSpywareblaster also has detected some issues.
SDFIX ran according to instructions, but no avail.
Have tried to install other AV software but none can install
Winsockfix done ..... nothing
Ipconfig cannot /release /renew because "RPC server unavailable".
Did a Windows restore to a day when it was all working, but almost immediately it was back to square one.
Did a ping to the NIC loopback and NIC is ok. Tried to do a USB connection, but not working.
I just noticed last night I cannot even access my modem!
Spybot has detected infections also.
BTW, laptop connects with no issues. Although I have to repair the connection every time I decide to connect to the net.
So here I am stuck with a serious infestation and unable to get rid of it.
I need some serious help!
