Hello Forum.
I am what id call moderate at fixing my computer i have just above a good understanding of my way around. My problem is i recently started using facebook and have noticed that on many occations through the day when i try to add a persons profile to mine another window opens as normal but instead of their profile showing i have multiple tabs opening all blank, white and with about:blank in address bar, its impossible to close any of these down and around 20 open within seconds. I then have to press the shut down button on my tower to reboot. I have spent the last few days researching this about:blank and have learnt a thing or two but really am not confident enough to try some of the suggestions ive seen. One i did try was looking for the appel.dll file? apprently if i am infected with this thats where it would be but that file has no value next to it that i can see and from that point onwards i get very confused. I have done a full virus scan with avast, used cwshredder.. ive also used hijackthis (log attached) but what im also confused about is everywhere i have researched about this problem all say it changes your home search page etc.. and or can direct you to porn sites etc to my knowledge this is not happening to me, my homepage is always as it should be and im never directed to any sites i shouldnt be..just loads of blank white tabs that open out of control. when i go to peoples profiles on facebook. (so far)
Any help or advise you could give would be so apprecaited

edit many many hours later - does anybody actually use these forums? i have gone by the rules and not bumped or anything as im apprently "in line" but its many hours later and not even a responce ?

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.


Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.
