System:

-Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 2 - Legitimate OEM Copy
-512 Megabytes of Memory
-Internet Explorer 6

Symptoms:

I've followed all recommended preliminary steps including physically cleaning the system hardware. After cleaning system of numerous malware infections, I was able to update all scanning tools including: CWShredder, Malwarebytes, Norton 360, Cleanup!, CCleaner, SAS and Avira and ran them again -- along with killbox for tough ones.

Infections Removed:

VBouncerRouter1203
Exploit.HTML.Mht
ADSPY.Lop.A.4

KillBox Failures:

Adware.Spyware Labs.Process C:\Documents and Settings\David\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\ETPMRMH0\search[1].

Worm.win32.autorun C:\Documents and Settings\Kim\Local Settings\Temp\om23.tmp

om####.tmp (11,351 kb) and JET####.tmp (0 kb) reappear with different numbers as part of the file name.

Windows Update (after MS fixes applied) still doesn't work even though services are running. Am I still being blocked?

Hello! :thumbup2:
My name is Sam and I will be helping you.

In order to see what's going on with your computer I will ask for you to post various logs from the tools that we will use to resolve your issue. Please also share with me any information about how your computer is reacting and behaving each step of the way as we work through this process.

We need to create an OTListIt2 Report
  • Please download OTListIt2 from here
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Push the "Run Scan" button.
  • The scan should take just a few minutes.
  • Copy the log that opens up and paste it back here in your next reply.

=============

The next log will show us any hidden files that are present.

Download GMER from here:
  • Unzip it to the desktop.
  • Open the program and click on the Rootkit tab.
  • Make sure all the boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for ‘Show All’.
  • Click on Scan.
  • When the scan has run click Copy and paste the results (if any) into this thread.

Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it!

Hello Sam,

I've tried the link provided in your response as well as numerous other well known download sites, but could only find the original version of OldTimer's ListIt. Either I'm being blocked from downloading the file, or the Oldtimer decided to actually retire. Do you have an alternative site or is is possible to zip and attach the errant file to this missive?

I was able to download a randomly numbered version of GMER, but haven't run either (OTListIt or GMER) because I wanted to do it in the sequence recommended.

Again, thanks for your time,
Paunchline

That's my fault for not keeping up with the updated version. Sorry about that. Here's the updated link.

Your logs don't look too bad. The biggest issue I see is that you still have Norton and Avira running at the same time. You should never run more than one antivirus program. This can cause serious issues such as conflicts that can crash your computer, or at best it will really slow everything down considerably.

Tell me about how your computer is behaving. What are your main issues now?

Hello Buckeye_Sam

Norton wasn't functional so I installed Avira, which detected several hidden malware infections. I usually turn one or the other off during the trouble shooting phase. Currently all malware tools update and scan properly.

The only persistent problems are a nonfunctioning Windows Automatic Update (NOT grayed out in the Control Panel) and the error code I'm receiving on the MS Update website: "[Error number: 0x800704DD] The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view."

After registering the appropriate DLL file and shutting down the system the Install Shield Icon appeared and installed five updates.

Additionally, I've yet to find information on the recurring JET####.tmp and om###.tmp files.

It is no wonder that the system was malfunctioning; it hasn't been updated since 2007.

Thanks for the assist,
Paunchline

PS. My handle is visible... what's the story about yours?

Evening Buckeye_Sam,

By using a variety of malware tools including Avira, Malwarebytes, Cleanup! and plenty of research via Google and the Forums here, the system has been successfully resusitated with Norton 360 fully functional again. The system (among others) was infected by:

Worm.win32.autorun
Adware.Spyware Labs.Process
WORM/Sobig.F worm
TR/Drop.Agent.GD.2
TR/Dldr.Stubby.B Trojan
ADSPY/Wheaterbug.A

Additionally, I stumbled upon a registry fix for the Automatic Windows Update error: [Error number: 0x800704DD], which required a registry edit at:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify_Disable\Senslogn

I renamed 'Notify' to 'NotifyX' and renamed 'Notify_Disable' to 'Notify' and deleted 'NotifyX' - All updates blocked since 2007 have been completed. (Sigh)

Although the [0x800704DD] error is a common issue, the solution was difficult to cull from the Internet.

Again, I thank you for the life modules spent on this issue by reviewing the logs I submitted.

Issues Resolved!

Life and laughter,
Paunchline

Glad to hear you got it sorted out. Just a few last steps for you.

Run OTL and click on the CleanUp button.
Reboot when prompted.

==============

Run an online scan at Secunia Online Software Inspector
  • Click on the red button at the bottom of the screen that says Start Scanner.
  • Follow the prompts to install the scanning software.
  • Do not check the box for Enable thorough system inspection
  • Click the Start button.
  • The program will scan your system and identify insecure versions of software and missing security updates.
  • Using the links provided in the scan, download and install any current and secure versions that are needed.

=============

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
