First an apology since my son posted here, then let the thread hang. The initial major symptoms included over a hundred files found by ad aware, and dozens more by Norton after my son tried to "fix" this. Some of the most frequent items were surfside kick, bulleye, cashback buddy, look to me, aurora, bargain buddy, nail, bargain buddy, weird on the web, windupdates, vx2, the file aunps2.dll, trojan buddy.f , rundll32, and so on. I did the following: 1) used trendmicro online 2) used symantec security check 3) ran McAfee Avert Stinger 4) cleaned harddrive with CCleaner 5) Scanned with ad-aware se and the VX2 plug-in for it 6) ran spybot and then used immunize. 7) ran Ewido, kill2me, about:buster, cwshredder, hsremove. Also a nail removal tool, nailfix, and a tool called LQfix. Previous to the above actions, I also ran the Symantec tools (fix)Ifeats, BiNet, Kelvir, NetOpt, Websch.

I have spywareblaster running in the background before the infection and it still is.
I have windows service pack 2 and using the firewall and also on a home router (not wireless).

This was all done in safe mode with network connections enabled (running xp home),and I disconnected from the internet after step 3.

After all this was done, in a few minutes, things began to reload. Spybot currently shows nothing, Norton shows nothing, Ad Aware shows two VX2 objects. Ewido has stopped two items (Trojandownloader Qoologic.q and a dll) a few minutes after connecting to the internet after running yet another exhaustive round of cleaning. Other trojans, including other downloader trojans, have been loaded at random over the days (it began 6/22).

All attempts have failed.

I would appreciate any help anyone can give me. Here is the hijackthis log and the Ad Aware log as of right now, after the ad aware scan that caught the vx2 (note I did a HijackThis before and after the Ad Aware scan and saw no difference after the vx2 objects were removed):

You also have a new variant of the qoologic trojan that is somewhat difficult to remove also. Can I get you to download and run the following please? Make sure to unzip it into its own folder:
http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.zip

Post up the log from Silent runners once it is complete, and we will go from there. :thumbsup:

I don't assume that you have any knowledge of malware at all. :thumbsup: I apologize if I sounded presumptuous.

The qoologic trojan is particularly difficult to remove because there are hidden files that 'watch' each other. If you don't get them all, then they will recreate themselves. The trick is to make sure that we have found all of the files before we start removing things. :flowers: And it is a bit time consuming to do so.

We have one more file to try to find, and since it is hidden, we have to use a special script to help us. This is going to give you a list of .dat files found in the windows registry, and it is going to list them one by one, so you will have to make a note of each one. It doesn't create a text file, so you will have to type them in for me once it is complete.

Open notepad and paste in the following lines:
' Test program for ListDir function.
' Lists file names using wildcards.
' Author: Christian d'Heureuse (www.source-code.biz)

Sub Main

Save the file to your desktop as "find_dat.vbs" including the quotes. Then double click on it. It should open a series of windows, one at a time, with a list of file names. Please post those here when you are done please. :trumpet:

Your logs are confusing me a little.... I see indicators of several different infections, but none of them are full blown. If you could indulge me a bit more, I just want to make sure I have a full picture of what is happening.

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

I will do that this evening...perhaps all the removal tools and removal using various forums for different infections I thought I had has removed some components? The pop-up problem is intermittant at most now, although the log and other things indicate infections, as you say. Ok, I need to do what you asked and will try to send in a bit. Have a good eveing (well, evening here anyway). I will look for your post, but you have been with this all day...cant say enough how kind you have been....

Ok, here it is...I got a window that said it was 16 bit, or not set for 16bit, and to click to close or ignore, so I ignored. Hope I did the right thing!!

We need to identify the sentinel file, so I need you to do this yet:

Open notepad and paste in the following lines:
' Test program for ListDir function.
' Lists file names using wildcards.
' Author: Christian d'Heureuse (www.source-code.biz)

Option Explicit

Main

Sub Main
   Dim Path
   Select Case WScript.Arguments.Count
      Case 0: Path = "c:\windows\system32\*.dat"            ' list current directory
      Case 1: Path = WScript.Arguments(0)
      Case Else: WScript.Echo "Invalid number of arguments.": Exit Sub
      End Select
   Dim a: a = ListDir(Path)
   If UBound(a) = -1 then
      WScript.Echo "No files found."
      Exit Sub
      End If
   Dim FileName
   For Each FileName In a
      WScript.Echo FileName
      Next
   End Sub

' Returns an array with the file names that match Path.
' The Path string may contain the wildcard characters "*"
' and "?" in the file name component. The same rules apply
' as with the MSDOS DIR command.
' If Path is a directory, the contents of this directory is listed.
' If Path is empty, the current directory is listed.
Public Function ListDir (ByVal Path)
   Dim fso: Set fso = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
   If Path = "" then Path = "*.*"
   Dim Parent, Filter
   if fso.FolderExists(Path) then     ' Path is a directory
      Parent = Path
      Filter = "*"
     Else
      Parent = fso.GetParentFolderName(Path)
      If Parent = "" Then If Right(Path,1) = ":" Then Parent = Path: Else Parent = "."
      Filter = fso.GetFileName(Path)
      If Filter = "" Then Filter = "*"
      End If

            End If
         End If
      Next
   CompareFileName2 = False
   End Function

Save as "Search.vbs" including the quotation marks. Double click on it, and it will one by one list .dat files. Please write them down so that you can give me a list if those in your next response also. There shouldn't be more than 10 or 15, and you will have to write them because the script doesn't dump them to a text file yet.

If you have any problems, please let me know.

Ok, ran the script and much different than the other one posted earlier:

Windows\system32\ocvi31an.dat
Windows\system32\5jk2p39|.dat (I am pretty sure it is a verticle line, not a one after the "9")
Windows\system32\d3d9caps.dat
Windows\system32\DSSEC.DAT
Windows\system32\emptyregdb.dat
Windows\system32\FNTCACHE.DAT
Windows\system32\MLANG.DAT
Windows\system32\NOISE.DAT
Windows\system32\OEMBIOS.DAT
Windows\system32\PERFC009.DAT
Windows\system32\PERFD009.DAT
Windows\system32\PERFH009.DAT
Windows\system32\PERFI009.DAT
Windows\system32\r5a3dubo.dat
Windows\system32\secupd.dat

Thanks.....

I see two of them that are bad, I just need to have you verify one of them. Go here:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/

In the submit box, paste in the following line:
c;\windows\system32\5jk2p39|.dat

Let me know if jotti finds anything wrong with it. If it ends up a file not found, check the spelling of the file. After that, then we can get rid of this (finally)..
