I've been having problems with Anti-Virus Gold hijacking my computer's functions (and maybe some other things?). Also, when I go into CONTROL PANEL > Display > Display Properties it only shows 2 tabs (Screen Saver & Settings), so it basically hijacked my function to change my background. Right now it looks like a blank blue screen with "Security Warning" as the title. THe following messages reads something to the effect of: A fatal error in IE...... caused by Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c

as a note, i have HijackThis, Ad-Aware, Killbox.exe and SpyBot currently on my computer. I tried to wipe this out with all these provided with no such luck. I also keep getting a pop up on the startup programs box in the lower right corner next to the clock "Your computer is infected!" (red circle with ! in the center).

Please help me out. It's very frustrating to work on the computer like this. Thanks for any help given! :flowers:

AWESOME! I thought it might've got lost in all the posts.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Here's a fresh log: (it's still driving me nuts! :flowers: )

btw, my desktop still has a blue screen that says:
Security Warning
A fatal error in IE has occurred...
caused by Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c

and it doesn't let me change the background when i go into display settings. it only shows Screen Saver & Settings Tabs. it took away the rest.

Ok, let's start with the smitfraud trojan first...

Print out these instructions and then close all windows including Internet Explorer.

Then I want you to fix some of those entries. Please do the following:

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then click the Fix button:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WindowsFY] c:\wp.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Security iGuard] C:\Program Files\Security iGuard\Security iGuard.exe
O9 - Extra button: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {D5BC2651-6A61-4542-BF7D-84D42228772C} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\wldr.dll
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {D5BC2651-6A61-4542-BF7D-84D42228772C} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\wldr.dll
O9 - Extra button: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {D5BC2651-6A61-4542-BF7D-84D42228772C} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\wldr.dll (HKCU)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {D5BC2651-6A61-4542-BF7D-84D42228772C} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\wldr.dll (HKCU)

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Then delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist)

c:\wp.exe
C:\Program Files\Security iGuard\
C:\WINDOWS\System32\wldr.dll
c:\wp.bmp

Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode.

Once you have rebooted download the following reg file to your desktop by right clicking on the link, and selecting save as.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/reg/smitfraud.reg

Once it has downloaded, double-click on the smitfraud.reg file on your desktop and when it asks if you would like to merge the data, click on the Yes button.

Reboot your computer and you should now be able to change your desktop settings back to how you would like it. If your desktop still looks strange, go into your display properties and click on the Themes tab. Change the theme to Windows XP and you will now be using the default Windows XP settings. Then change them as you see fit.

Reboot and post a new log.

Thanks for the reply!

I've followed the steps but didn't find ANY of the files/links that you posted? Strange or perfectly normal? *shrug* in either case I can now change the background to how I like it but I still get the annoying "Your computer is infected" in my right hand corner toolbar. Any suggestions?

Again, much Mahalo! (thank you in hawaiian)

That's ok.. sometimes those files are not there.

Put a checkmark next to the following entries in HijackThis. Make sure all
other windows and browsers are closed before clicking on “Fix Checked”
.

Ok.. let's try a different way:

Download SmitRem or
SmitRem and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

****************

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

*******

Fix the following with HJT:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://www.oneclicksearches.com/search.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.oneclicksearches.com/bar.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://www.oneclicksearches.com/search.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.oneclicksearches.com/search.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = http://www.oneclicksearches.com/search.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://www.oneclicksearches.com/search.php?qq=%1
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = http://www.oneclicksearches.com/
O2 - BHO: VMHomepage Class - {FFFFFFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFFFFFFFFFA} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\hp8B19.tmp

***

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

***

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

***

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

***

Reboot and post a new log please.

Remove this line with HJT:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.oneclicksearches.com/bar.html

Are you still seeing the funky desktop?

i deleted it on hjt. desktop is normal. when i performed the previous steps listed it changed my background back to normal default but it's still readily available to change to my personal settings if i like.

the "your computer is infected" icon is still displayed and periodically pops up every now and then like it usually does. the most recent problem i'm having though is that when i try to run HJT and get a log file it freezes up or other programs freeze up and in turn the whole computer freezes up with no response. this is kind of a frequent happening now. :flowers:

i'll try and post a new HJT log if i can. but i can say that the below listed lines are'nt there anymore:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://www.oneclicksearches.com/search.php?qq=%1

I hate this infection..

Supposedly Ewido Security Suite can now handle it, so I suppose we should give that a try before we do anything else. I am a little uncomfortable with the fact that your system seems to be getting unstable..

http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

See if that does it. If not, try getting a HJT log in safe mode, and we wil see what is happening there.

thanks for the link to the ewido security suite site. it found 18 or so various trojans and spyware (wow! wtf!? ) that the other programs couldn't find. the "your computer is infected" icon is also missing. desktop seems normal. computer operation also seems normal (sometimes a bit laggy or unresponsive on some reboots but otherwise normal). the trjoans it was picking up though were Trojan.Agent.ff, Trojan.Agent.ff (different location) and Spyware.PurityScan

here is my current HJT log. again thanks for all your help. i know it took quite awhile to try and resolve this one.
