I had RegTool on my computer. It stopped opening. I followed suppports' recommendations to fix and removed it from my computer. Tried to re-install and got a message which appears on a blue/green screen background entitled (in the bar at the top) Sony MPEG2-TS Splitter 1.0.0.1121. In the middle of the field there is a dialog box with the header Sony MPEG2-TS Splitter - InstallShield Wizard with the following message "The set-up has detected that version 2.0.01 of Sony Video Shared Library is already installed." He asked for a Hijack log file and asked me to fix the following:

Hi Mikebizz,

Welcome to Bleeping Computer. My name is m0le and I will be helping you with your log.
  • Please subscribe to this topic, if you haven't already.
  • Please avoid installing/uninstalling or updating any programs and attempting any unsupervised fixes or scans. This can make helping you impossible.
  • Please reply to this post so I know you are there.
The forum is busy and we need to have replies as soon as possible. If I haven't had a reply after 3 days I will bump the topic and if you do not reply by the following day then I will close the topic.

The HijackThis fix that was provided was more used as a clean-up of old programs and old versions.

We can do the same sort of thing if you wish. The log is clean though.

First

I do not recommend that you have more than one anti virus product installed and running on your computer at a time. The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them can cause other anti virus products to cause "false alarms". It can also lead to a clash as both products fight for access to files which are opened again this is the resident/automatic protection. In general terms, the two programs may conflict and cause:
1) False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.
2) System Performance Problems: Your system may lock up due to both products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Therefore please go to add/remove in the control panel and remove either Symantec or Webroot.

I would recommend you keep the Symantec Norton as you are using the Norton firewall.

Next

You have outdated Java on your PC. This is like a back door to a virus.

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.
Finally, a quick clean-up

Please run a BitDefender Online Scan
  • Click I Agree to agree to the EULA.
  • Allow the ActiveX control to install when prompted.
  • Click Click here to scan to begin the scan.
  • Please refrain from using the computer until the scan is finished. This might take a while to run, but it is important that nothing else is running while you scan.
  • When the scan is finished, click on Click here to export the scan results.
  • Save the report to your desktop so you can post it in your next reply.
Thanks :thumbup2:

m0le,
Thank you for your help. I have run the steps you advised.

As I understand your POV on the RegTool representative's guidance i can go ahead with their instructions to clean some entries from HijackThis without fear of harming my system.

The BitDefender log is attached. Please advise on next steps and thanks again for your support!
Mikebizz

Hi Mikebizz,

Looks like you had a few infected files that BitDefender has removed.

There may be something hidden in the log which brought those in.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application or, if you are using Vista, right-click and select Run As Administrator on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.

Also

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. (This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only)Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

If you are using Firefox and this has caused page loading problems then please clear your private data. To do this go
to the Tools menu, select Clear Private Data, and then check Cache. Click Clear Private Data Now.

Then close Firefox and then reopen it.

Finally

We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from the mirror:
    This is THE Mirror
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:[list]
    OTListIt.txt <-- Will be opened
    Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized
Let's see what that throws out. :thumbup2:

Just a few things to do now.

We need to execute an OTM script
  • Please download OTM by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Paste the following code under the Posted Image area. Do not include the word "Code".
    :Files
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\gvdjlsz.sys
    :Services
    gvdjlsz
  • Push the large Posted Image button.
  • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
  • Copy/Paste the contents under the Posted Image line here in your next reply.
  • If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.
Post the OTM log.

Then let's see what's left

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.
Thanks :thumbup2:

m0le,
Here's what I got in the OTM log:

OTM by OldTimer - Version 2.1.0.1 log created on 06202009_215135

Couldn't get Kapersky to work. It should have because

•OS type:Windows XP
•Web browser:Microsoft Internet Explorer 8.0
•Java vendor:Sun Microsystems Inc.
•Java version:1.6.0_14
•Java architecture:x86
•Java enabled:true

Your computer meets the requirements. Please accept the terms of the program usage to continue installation."

But after clicking the "Accept" button all I could ever get was either

"This program was desinged to work onlyunder MicrosoftWIndows 32-bit (x86) version" Then it says my computer will work, then:

"Please wait until the program's applet has been loaded, and a Java plug-in security warning message has appeared. If you click Cancel, you'll need to close the Kaspersky Online Scanner 7.0 window and open it again to continue installation"

"Starting Java applet has failed! Please go online to use this program."

But no download progress is ever made. Stays at 0%. I had both Norton and Webroot turned off while I tried to run it.
Thoughts?

Hi Mikebizz,

Here's what I got in the OTM log:

OTM by OldTimer - Version 2.1.0.1 log created on 06202009_215135

Just to confirm, the OTM log was blank, right?

I think we'd better try another method to remove that driver.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop but rename it Combo-Fix.exe
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

For now we will leave the online scan until we see what Combofix finds. :thumbup2:

m0le,
Hope a file uplaod is what you wanted instead of a cut and paste. Anyway, here it is. It took more than 10 mintues to run the ComboFix - nearly 25. Hope we're progressing.
BTW - I have never executed the fix the RegTool rep had advised me that started this string. When we get done I'll go forward with that since you said "it's clean". Please forgive the anticipation, but there are two more questions I'll wnat to know when we're done:
1. If you don't recommend keeping both Norton and Webroot (but keeping Norton due to the fireawll) how do I keep from getting the adware/malware/virusthreat? If I have malware etc then they aren't entirley effective. Which leads to the next quesiton.
2. Is there an Internet Security suite you recommend over any other? One that doesn't come with it's own set of adware? (Naturally I'm paid up on both Norton and Webroot for at least the next year.)

Looking forward to the next step of the journey! As always - thanks!

Hi Mikebizz,

Please copy and paste any logs I ask for. Don't worry now though as I have analysed the Combofix log. :thumbup2:

First, your questions.

If you don't recommend keeping both Norton and Webroot (but keeping Norton due to the fireawll) how do I keep from getting the adware/malware/virusthreat? If I have malware etc then they aren't entirley effective.

Bleeping Computer, and me, recommend that you run one antivirus, one antispyware product with realtime protection and an external firewall. Two AVs work against each other. As to the effectiveness of these programs you can only update your AV when they update the virus signatures. If a newer virus appears then it will go straight under the radar.

Every AV and antispyware program will be breached by new infections. You must keep updated as this keeps you as protected as you can be. Yes, none of them are entirely effective.

Is there an Internet Security suite you recommend over any other? One that doesn't come with it's own set of adware? (Naturally I'm paid up on both Norton and Webroot for at least the next year.)

When we have cleaned your PC completely I will give you a set of links to all the available options for AVs, Antispyware and firewalls. I wouldn't recommend any particularly but I use an AV called Avast. It updates automatically and is free. I use Spybot for antispyware, which is also free.

Back to the fix

The log removed a virus called Recycler. Do you use any removable media such as flashdrives?
It is possible that it would have infected them and if you then plugged them back in there would be the possibility of reinfecting your PC.

If so let me know before we proceed.

I have used flash drives but not with any regularity. I cannot recall the last time I may have used on oe this computer, but certailnbly within the last 6-12 months.

Thought I'd lost you there, Mikebizz.

If you haven't used a flashdrive plugged into the PC since the problems began then it's likely that the device does not have infections.

So we can start to clear up now :thumbup2:

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.

  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.
Then please post new DDS logs too.
