Hi! I hope I am doing this right since I am not good with computers... My computer is experiencing serious problems. I think it started with a click of a link in which many pop-ups appeared uncontrollably or when a page came up saying it was running some anti-virus software and I had an infection. It seems from that point on my computer has not been the same. When using Internet Explorer and doing Google searches, I am redirected to places other than what I have searched for, but if I use another browser (like Crazy Browser) I do not have that problem. My computer also crashes on startup or restart with the blue screen of death appearing (sorry I didn't write down what it says but let me know if you would like me to). I restart in safe mode and turn off and turn on; sometimes it crashes again and sometimes it doesn't and loads fine. I tried to do a system restore to an earlier point and could not because it said something was wrong with my disk. I also recently installed a new printer. I have tried to download Malwarebytes but am unable to even do that, and I downloaded Combofix to see what it was but thought better and wanted to wait for someone with expertise to advise me. Please tell me where I fouled up and how to fix it and if there is any further information I need to provide you with. Thank you in advance, and please bear with my lack of computer knowledge.

Hi

I recommend to uninstall Limewire file sharing software there. P2P clients are nowadays bad infection magnets.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully first.

Please continue as follows:
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link
    Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New dds.txt log.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

I uninstalled Limewire and disabled everything as advised. I had to rename ComboFix to Combo-Fix in order for it to run. ComboFix alerted me that I had rootkit activity and deleted the files. Here are the two requested reports:

I re-enabled everything I previously disabled. When I attempted to move ComboFix to a folder, McAfee flagged it as a trojan and quarantined it under the detection name of Artemis!742E77778D3B. Is that right?

I noticed that now when doing Google searches using Internet Explorer, I am not being redirected to other unwanted sites but some images are not showing up and are appearing as a box with a red X in it.

Hi again,

I re-enabled everything I previously disabled. When I attempted to move ComboFix to a folder, McAfee flagged it as a trojan and quarantined it under the detection name of Artemis!742E77778D3B. Is that right?

McAfee and other antivirus programs should be disabled when you handle ComboFix.

I noticed that now when doing Google searches using Internet Explorer, I am not being redirected to other unwanted sites but some images are not showing up and are appearing as a box with a red X in it.

Please see this article.

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

No, I didn't set this proxy setting myself.

Hi,

Ok. Let's remove that proxy setting then :thumbup2:

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

DDS::
uInternet Settings,ProxyServer = 127.0.0.1:8080
uInternet Settings,ProxyOverride = local

Save this as
CFScript

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Close all browser windows and refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log & a fresh dds.txt log. How's the system running?

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Everything seems to be fine now except for images. I never had this problem prior to being infected but now some images (like the Google log) will hang and show an empty box before the image appears, and sometimes no image appears at all except for a box with a red X. This never happened before, so I'm wondering if this recent problem is a result of the infection. I read the article you recommended, but it does not help. Thanks, though, for all the assistance you have been giving me. Here are the requested logs:

Hi,

Please see this knowledge base article on the issue. Let me know how it goes :)

Thanks. I found the reason for the problem, and it had nothing to do with my computer or settings. Other than that, everything is working fine. I can live with it if there is nothing else to do. At least the most important issue has been resolved, and I'm pleased with the results and your generosity with your time. I really appreciate your help. :thumbup2:

You're welcome :)

To help other people with similar issue would you mind to tell what was/is causing it?

Please find some recommended after cleaning steps below.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

A To disable the System Restore feature:

1. Click on the Start button.
2. Hover over the Computer option, right click on it and then click Properties.
3. On the left hand side, click Advanced Settings.
4. If asked to permit the action, click on Allow.
5. Click on the System Protection tab.
6. Uncheck any checkboxes listed for your hard drives.
7. Press OK.

B. Reboot.

C Turn ON System Restore.
Follow the steps like you did when disabling system restore but on step 6. check any checkboxes listed for your hard drives.

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type "c:\users\Itzaseacret\Desktop\ComboFix.exe" /u in the runbox and click OK

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.
  • hosts file:
    • Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them.
    • In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages.
    • We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages.
    • However, it can slow down certain computers.
    • This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here. Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
    • Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen)
    • Click run
    • In the dialog box, type services.msc
    • hit enter, then locate dns client
    • Highlight it, then double-click it.
    • On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual.
    • Click ok
  • Get Anti Virus Software and keep it updated - Most AVs will update automatically, but if not I would recommend making updating the AV the first job every time the PC is connected to the internet. An AV that is using defs that are seven days old is not going to be much protection. If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out. Good free antivirus programs are:
    Antivir
    Avast!
  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check this webpage out.
If you don't have a 3rd party firewall or a router behind NAT then I recommend getting one. I recommend either Online Armor Free or Comodo Firewall Pro (If you choose Comodo: Uncheck during installation "Install Comodo SafeSurf..", Make Comodo my default search provider" and "Make Comodo Search my homepage" and install firewall ONLY!). Both providers have support forums that help with configuration related questions.

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Run the spybot and adaware regularly. (Once or twice a week minimum.)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade :thumbup2:

Everything seems to be working fine with the exception of my new wireless printer causing havoc; I've had to uninstall and reinstall it several times. It coincided with the issue you corrected, which just magnified my computer problems, but the printer is okay now. Again, thanks for your help! Signing off...
