son forgot log on password on xp system

My sond has not used his pc in sometime, he is at college and has a laptop. I want to use the computer, but at the lo in it only has him as a user and he doesn't remember the password. I was told to open in safe mode which I was able to do, but then it asks for something to be typed in and i don't know what to do
help
