Hi,

Thanks for the help with this recurring problem!

My older computer running Windows XP v3 was hijacked a few weeks ago by a trojan that changed the desktop with an infection warning and gave a balloon in the system tray that warned that the system had "founded" an infection on the computer. The browser kept redirecting to Antivirus Pro 2009 webpage and locked out the task manager and other windows settings like the desktop.

I thought that I had cleared the problem by running my McAffee antivirus, combofix, and Asquared. But recently the web searches that I do redirect to Healthvideo or a similar search website when I click on the results links. Clicking on the cached link goes to the proper website. I'm at a loss on how to correct the problem because whatever malware that the scan programs find and delete, the problem seems to start coming back as soon as I reboot.

Thanks!

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Thanks for the help! The redirects from links in the websearch results are still happening.

Let me know what else you might need as far as a description of the problem. I am using Firefox 3.0.10 as my browser.

Hi raymond w,

Welcome to BC HijackThis forum. I am farbar. I am going to assist you with your problem.

Please refrain from making any changes to your system (updating Windows, installing applications, removing files, etc.) from now on as it might prolong handling your log and make the job for both of us more difficult.

Your log(s) show that you are using so called peer-to-peer or file-sharing programs. These programs allow to share files between users as the name(s) suggest. In today's world the cyber crime has come to an enormous dimension and any means is used to infect personal computers to make use of their stored data or machine power for further propagation of the malware files. A popular means is the use of file-sharing tools as a tremendous amount of prospective victims can be reached through it.

It is therefore possible to be infected by downloading manipulated files via peer-to-peer tools and thus suggested to be used with intense care. Some further readings on this subject, along the included links, are as follows: "File-Sharing, otherwise known as Peer To Peer" and "Risks of File-Sharing Technology."

Removal Instructions
  • Empty all p2p download folders. They might contain infected files. Please avoid using these p2p applications until the system is clean. Using these applications at this stage might lead to reinfection or infecting other users.

  • Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from one of these locations:
    malwarebytes.org
    majorgeeks.com
  • Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the MBAM log.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

The MBAM scan found one registry item; it deleted the file and did not require a reboot...

Thanks so much for your help tracking this infection down.

Please run ComboFix just once this time as I need to see the log of the first run.
  • Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3

    * IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

    • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Information on A/V control HERE)
    • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
    • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
    • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

    Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please copy and paste the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

  • Tell me if the redirecting still occurs, if yes is it limited to Firefox or IE gets redirected too.

When I tried to download the combofix file from the 1st link I had a notice from McAfee AV that it blocked and removed the Artemis trojan.

Let me retype the notice window; I can't just cut and paste:

Was the redirection limited to Firefox?

It was the McAfee AV blocking the download of ComboFix and erasing the file.

The result of the ComboFix run displayed the log file and also cleared the desktop picture with a white background remaining. I don't know if that's normal results from the changes.

The redirects seem to have stopped, so I think that we're :thumbup2:

I'll let you know if anything changes after the next computer reboot. That will be the acid test to be sure that the infection is cured!

Thanks so much for your help! I appreciate it very much!

Great. Let me know if anything changes.

ComboFix removed a desktop.ini file. Did you have a customize desktop picture?

Yes, I had a custom desktop picture of the spring wildflowers and bluebonnets in Texas. When I pulled up the desktop properties, the picture file was still on the list of desktop backgrounds to use. I just reloaded the picture for my desktop.

I was playing with the search link redirects tonight and I started seeing link redirects again on some links. It seemed to affect Google searches and not affect Yahoo searches. A few links pulled up a medical related site. Most worked like they were supposed to.

On the 5th link redirect it went to nicleaner.com and Firefox blocked the page load as a known attack site. This scared me a bit so I stopped testing and thought I should wait for further instructions from you.

I asked the question twice before, guess you missed it. Is the redirection limited to Firefox or it occurs in IE too?
