If I'm reading it right,

intel celeron cpu 540 @1.8ghz = model & max rated speed of the CPU

1.40 ghz = Current speed of the CPU, should go to max speed when needed.
[cooling feature, slower running = cooler]

0.99 gb of ram = amount of installed memory.
[Not unusual for it to be a little off]

physical address extension = a feature of the CPU that allows it to use more then 4GB of memory.

thank you so much for letting me know the exact meaning of the terms....when i hadnt installed the additional ram and my system had only 512 mb of ram, then my system property just showed 1.8ghz,with no mention of 1.4 ghz ,the 1.4 ghz appeared after i installed additional ram...is it common for this sort of thing to happen?

Adding memory shouldn't have changed the speed of the CPU.
You might try going to the BIOS setup > Exit, load the defaults ,save & exit.

What model is the unit ?

Well , that sort of told me what I wanted to know.
There should be an actual model number on it somewhere , like 33Q, 44Q, etc.

To access the BIOS turn the unit off.
Turn it on & tap the F1 key.
That should get you there.

As far as I know most laptops have power saving features.
One of them is usually to run the CPU slower to save power until the full speed is needed.
It's a battery life thing.
The less power your unit uses the longer the battery lasts when it's running off of the battery.

Has it got noticably slower since you added the memory or does it seem faster ?

no, since adding the memory i haven't noticed my computer lowing down..however on occasion there are some problems but i think they are more related to the operating system...thanks for helping me out, since its a battery saving feature,i think i should not try to do any changes to speed the cpu is running at since i haven't seen my computer slowing down..the cpu normally heats up to 75-80 degree Celsius when i run heavy applications, but normally it runs at 65 degrees...
