Recently my antivirus said I had a virus. After scanning my whole computer in regular and safe mode it found nothing. My computer has been moving very slow and I can not even listen to music because it will skip. I appreciate any help.

Thanks,
Steve

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

The problem is still happening. It takes me a long time to start anything on my computer. Firefox will take 2-3 minutes just to open up. The whole computer is just running sluggish and I think it is some sort of virus or trojan because I use spybot s&d, clean my registry, and other things along that line to keep my computer running quickly. Like I said earlier my anti-virus alerted me of a threat but after scanning it said my system was clean so I feel I have something hiding in my computer.

Hopefully this problem can be resolved. I thank you for your help.

Hi stevenc1010,

Welcome again to BC HijackThis forum. I am farbar. I am going to assist you with your problem.

Please refrain from making any changes to your system (updating Windows, installing applications, removing files, etc.) from now on as it might prolong handling your log and make the job for both of us more difficult.

I don't see any apparent infection. We are going to do some cleaning and do a checkup.
  • This small application you may want to keep and use to keep the computer clean.
    Download CCleaner from here http://www.ccleaner.com/
    • Run the installer to install the application.
    • When it gives you the option to install Yahoo toolbar uncheck the box next to it.
    • Run CCleaner. (make sure under Windows tab all the boxes of Internet Explorer and Windows explorer are checked. Under System check Empty Recycle Bin and Temporary Files. Under Application tab all the boxes should be checked).
    • Click Run Cleaner.
    • Close CCleaner.
  • Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from one of these ocations:
    malwarebytes.org
    majorgeeks.com
    • Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
    • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
    • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
    • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Copy&Paste the MBAM log.
    Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

It appears I have no malware. My computer is running extremely slow which made me think it had to be a virus. Is there anything else it could be?

About the slowness please consult this: Slow Computer/browser? Check Here First; It May Not Be Malware

A few tips from the given link I would certainly recommend:

1. Run CCleaner regularly.

2. Do a disk check to correct volume errors. To do that:
  • Click start and then My Computer.
  • Right click the drive C and select Properties.
  • Under Tools tab press Check Now...
  • Put a check mark in both items and press start.
  • If you get a message click Yes to schedule the disk check and click OK and then restart your computer to start the disk check. Please be patient and let the system run. In some cases it might take a couple of hours and you don't have to sit there the whole time.
3. Defragment your computer regularly.

Do you have any question?

I actually did everything on that slow computer/browser link but it stayed just as slow. Ill do the disk check and defrag though.

Thanks for your help.

See if makes difference. If not we can check for rootkit hidden to make sure.

Still running basically as slow as before. I'm not sure, I really feel like it is some sort of infection. It just moves extremely sluggish.

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security program drivers will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO.
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Make sure the following are unchecked:
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than C:\ drive (C:\ drive should remain checked)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to begin. (Please be patient as it can take some time to complete).
  • When the scan is finished, you will see the scan button appears again. Click Save to save the scan results to your Desktop.
  • Save the file as gmer.log and copy/paste the contents in your next reply.

Once again it appears nothing has been found. I don't really understand it. It may have been a coincidence, but the first time I ran the scan I got back and my computer had been restarted and it said that my computer had just "recovered from a serious error."

My computer is running a little bit quicker now than it was before but if I try doing two things at once it crawls. Maybe its time for a new computer.

I appreciate your help and if you can think of anything else let me know.

The log seems OK.

Before going for a new computer lets dig a little deeper.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Information on A/V control HERE)
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please copy and paste the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

I just realized up until this scan, I have been disengaging my antivirus incorrectly. If this makes a difference I will rerun the tests I have already performed. Here is the combofix log with my antivirus correctly turned off.

stevenc1010,

The slowness doesn't seem malware related. Please don't uninstall ComboFix yet.

I see you have many restore points. The oldest one is dated 3/24/2009. Have you tried to restore Windows? Because the way the computer behaves you have nothing to loose. It might worth a shot. What do you think?

Are these restore points created automatically because I have never done that before.

I thought about just restoring my computer. I might just have to do that. I am currently out of town, but when I get back to my house I'll grab my windows disk and restore the computer. Unless there are any other ways of doing it.

If not, I will be able to do that, I appreciate your help.

Thanks,

Steve
