I have a virus which prevents me from opening the home page for internet explorer to about:blank. When I set the home page to about:blank, I am unable to open internet explorer. If I set it to google search or any other website, then I am able to open it. When I go to some websites, internet explorer just shuts down without any warning. A check by microsoft antispyware reveals the virus. But even when i remove it, I am unable to open internet explorer to about:blank, and the virus resurfaces later.

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000

Here is the log file from HIJACK THIS:

Hello fittycent350 and welcome to the BC forums. You cannot set your homepage to about blank because it is not a valid url. And why would you want to do that anyway? If you simply want a blank page to come up when you open your browser then create a blank html page on your local machine and point you browser to that.

If you need help in doing that then post a question in the IE forum here:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/Web...ations-f14.html

Since this is not a malware issue and there is no malware in this log I am closing this topic.

Cheers.

Hi fittycent350. If you are having problems with your IE then we are not finished yet. Let's run a couple of diffreent scans and see what they show us:

Download PFind.zip and unzip the contents to its own permanent folder.

Important! Reboot in SAFE MODE !!

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer in Safe Mode.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Locate the pfind.bat file and double-click it to run it. It will start scanning your computer and could take a little while so be patient. When the DOS window closes, reboot back to normal mode.

After you have rebooted start HijackThis and follow these steps:
  • Click on Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Check the checkbox for List minor sections (full)
  • Check the checkbox for List empty sections (complete)
  • Click on the Generate StartupList Log button
  • Click the Yes button to create the list
Post the contents of C:\pfind.txt and the information from the StartupList back here and I will review it when it comes in.

Hi fittycent350. Everything looks clean in those 2 logs so I'd say you are good to go. If you have any further details regarding any problems you are having let me know and I can try and point you in the right direction.

Cheers.
