Yesterday between 5 and 6 a drive-by download found its way on my computer. Not sure how or from where, but I immediately began cleaning it up. Some of the things I know it did for sure:
* Installed Antivirus 2009, including the IE OCX extension
* Blocked access to some sites, such as YouTube, from IE (Firefox was OK)
* Installed (I think it was) Wbot.z
* Dropped sdra.exe into the Winlogon startup path
* Installed the rootkit UACinit. This was a doozy. It disabled the security center continuously and prevented many AV programs from being run unless they were renamed. I think it even identified them by name the first time they were run and caught them on subsequent runs on the same boot by hash/signature even with different names. (Rebooting after renaming let them run just fine though :thumbup2:)

I consider myself pretty computer savvy, but this was a pretty ugly mess. Four hours into cleaning it up, a combination of AVG, Spybot and MalwareBytes were all reporting that it's clean, except for UACInit, which would get scheduled for deletion but come right back. I ended up running ComboFix (I know, sequence breaking), which appears to have gotten it, because the obvious rootkit behaviors listed above went away.

So now AVG, SpyBot and MalwareBytes all report the system as clean. Normally I'd just consider this a job well done, but with an infection this deep, I'd still like a security expert to review these logs and see if there's anything hiding in the nooks and crannies.

Thanks for your help in advance, and super thanks to the ComboFix author.

Here's the standard requested logs. I also have a ComboFix log available if requested.

Since the last post, I've done a few more things with the system:

* Used ComboFix to remove the hidden randomly-named tmkiwha.sys file, after seeing it in another user's symptoms
* Unstalled AVG and switched to Avast!
* Scanned a bunch of files in the log with VirusTotal
* Upgraded to the latest versions of Acrobat, Flash and Java (as well as Apache, MySQL and PHP but those applications shouldn't be externally visible)

The computer seems to be running fine, but I'd still like an expert to take a look.

I have not yet uninstalled ComboFix.

I have not used the computer for anything sensitive since the infection.

I don't remember ever installing anything Norton, but it may have been part of some software bundled with my motherboard. Either way, I primarily use Windows Firewall and am behind a router.

Hello jammitch!,

The log appears clean still, it's important to run this online scan to search for any remnants. It can take some time, so please be patient and allow it to run it's full course:

Using Internet Explorer or Firefox, visit http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/d...kavwebscan.html

1. Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.

2. To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
3. Click Run at the Security prompt. The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database. Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.

  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply

Here's the report; it's essentially clean. That keygen is really old and has never been run on this computer, so it's not related to the recent issues, and I haven't done anything similar in a long time either (never on this computer to my recollection). I went ahead and deleted it.

Your logs are clean, but fair warning...

Visiting cracksites/warezsites - and other questionable/illegal sites is always a risk.

Even a single click on the site can drop multiple forms of very serious malware, many of which disable your onboard protection, and System Restore.

If you install the cracked software, you are running executable files from these dubious, unknown sources. You are in effect giving these sources access to information on your hard disk, and potential control over the operation of your computer.

That being said, your logs are clean. If there aren't any more problems, please continue with these final instructions and helpful links:

The following procedure will implement some cleanup procedures. It will also reset your System Restore by flushing out previous restore points (which contain the infections) and create a new restore point.

Click Start > Run and copy/paste, or type the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /u

--------------------------------------------------------------------

As you just experienced for yourself, ComboFix is a very effective tool. Should you wish to contribute to the ongoing development of ComboFix, donations are being accepted via PayPal.

To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them:

WOT, Web of Trust, warns you about risky websites that try to scam visitors, deliver malware or send spam. Protect your computer against online threats by using WOT as your front-line layer of protection when browsing or searching in unfamiliar territory. WOT's color-coded icons show you ratings for 21 million websites, helping you avoid the dangerous sites:
  • Green to go
  • Yellow for caution
  • Red to stop
WOT has an addon available for both Firefox and IE.

SpywareBlaster 4.0 to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place. Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions. After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items.
  • It will block any bad ActiveX from running in Internet Explorer and Firefox if it's listed in their database (which you should update frequently). To view their database and list of restricted sites, launch the program and click on each of the tabs on the main display page.

Update, and scan with your onboard Anti Malware and Anti Virus programs regularly. Without regular updates you will not be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Scan here http://secunia.com/software_inspector/ for out of date & vulnerable common applications on your computer

In light of your recent issue, I'm sure you'd like to avoid any future infections. Be aware and Think Prevention

I updated everything from the below tools and upgraded to IE8. I also booted with UBCD4Win and scanned from there as well (because I'm paranoid) and it's all coming back clean. Everything's looking good.
