trying to fix my moms windows xp dell comp

what's happening is when you click on a link to any site, it directs you somewhere else, then you have to click the back button, and click the link again, and it'll take you to the right spot

so i tried to run the malwarebytes, hijack this, avg, ad-aware, combofix

none will work

renamed them all to .com and .scr in the shortcuts and in the program files folders

still won't run

they pop up for a half second and then disappear

i tried this in normal mode and in safe mode and the same thing happens

i was going to just copy all her files she needs and put them on dvd's and then re-install xp home but she doesn't have the disk

she's got the product code on the side of the comp but i don't know if that will work with the bootleg

anyone have any ideas on how to get this virus out of here or if i should just try a bootleg xp or what should i do here?

Hi, let's first try for an MBam log..
Please do not run Combo Fix on your own, se author's discalimer.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/New_Disclaimer_090525.gif
If needed we'll ask for the HJT log.

Your HOSTS file may be infected. So let's replace it, reboot in Safe Mode with Networking.
Click on Start then Run and type: %windir%\system32\drivers\etc\
Delete the following file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

While in safe mode, launch MBAM and try to update the definition database. DO NOT scan yet. Reboot normally, then perform a new Quick Scan and check all items found for removal. You must reboot normally after the scan to remove the malware.

The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Some types of malware will disable MBAM (MalwareBytes) and other security tools. If MBAM will not install, try renaming it.

Before saving any of your security programs, rename them first. For example, before you save Malwarebytes', rename it to something like MBblah.exe and then click on Save and save it to your desktop. Same thing after you install it. Before running it, rename the main executable file first
***
Right-click on the mbam-setup.exe file and change the .exe extension to .bat, .com, .pif, or .scr and then double-click on it to run.

If after installation, MBAM will not run, open the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder in Program Files, right-click on mbam.exe and change the .exe as noted above. Then double-click on it to run..

***
Another work around is by not using the mouse to install it, Just use the arrow keys, tab, and enter keys.
***
Open up command prompt, type in following commands:
XP >> click the Start menu at the lower-left of your computer's desktop and select "Run". Type cmd into the Run box and click "OK".
Vista >> click the Start menu at the lower-left of your computer's desktop and Type cmd in the search box.

regsvr32 mbamext.dll
regsvr32 ssubtmr6.dll
regsvr32 vbalsgrid6.ocx
regsvr32 zlib.dll

****

If you cannot use the Internet, you will need access to another computer that has a connection.
From there save mbam-setup.exe to a flash, usb, jump drive or CD. Now transfer it to the infected machine, then install and run the program.
If you cannot transfer to or install on the infected machine, try running the setup (installation) file directly from the flash drive or CD by double-clicking on mbam-setup.exe so it will install on the hard drive.

Manually Downloading Updates:
Manually download them from HERE and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer, copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine.

***
Try this random renamer for MBAM
http://kixhelp.com/wr/files/mb/randmbam.exe
****
Try using a System Retore Point prior to the date of infection. You may be able to update and run MBam. Note this did not remove the malware.

We need to run HJT/DDS.
Please follow this guide. go and do steps 6 and 7 ,, Preparation Guide For Use Before Using Hijackthis. Then go here HijackThis Logs and Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal ,click New Topic, give it a relevant Title and post that complete log.

Let me know if it went OK.

i used my laptop and downloaded the dds.scr and uploaded it to sendspace then emailed the link to myself since i couldn't click the link you gave me on this computer

so i downloaded that and ran the scans

then i tried to go into the hijack this log area to post the txt files and it would do the net cutoff everytime i would click on that section

so i had to email the logs to myself and post them in the hijack this log section from my laptop

If you cannot get DDS to work, please try this instead.

Please download RSIT by random/random and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You will need to run this tool while connected to the Internet so it can download HijackThis if it is not located on your system. If you get a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding Rist attempting to contact the Internet, please allow the connection.
  • Close all applications and windows so that you have nothing open and are at your Desktop.
  • Double-click on RSIT.exe to start the program.
  • If using Windows Vista, be sure to Run As Administrator.
  • Click Continue after reading the disclaimer screen.
  • Leave the drop down box set to default: "List/folders created or modified in the last 1 month (30 days).
  • When the scan is complete, a text file named log.txt will automatically open in Notepad.
  • Save the log file to your desktop and copy/paste the contents into a new topic in the HijackThis Logs and Malware Removal forum, NOT here.
Important: Be sure to mention that you tried to follow the Prep Guide but were unable to get DDS to run.
If RSIT did not work, then reply back here.

Your DDS/HijackThis log is posted here.

Now that your log is posted, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a HJT Team member, nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show it the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the member assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer.

From this point on the HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean.

To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic until you are cleared by the HJT Team. If you still need assistance after your log has been reviewed and you have been cleared, please PM me or another moderator and we will re-open this topic.

Good luck with your log.
