My pc was infected with Win 32/Cryptor. AVG would not clear the infection. I ran Malwarebytes mbam which found and cleared over 140 infections. But my computer is VERY slow now. Much slower than before.
I've posted the logs below. What do you recommend? I am not very savvy, so your help is greatly needed and much appreciated. I promise I won't do anything else without supervision.
Thank you,
Christine

IMPORTANT NOTE: One or more of the identified infections was a backdoor Trojan. Backdoor Trojans, IRCBots and Infostealers are very dangerous because they provide a means of accessing a computer system that bypasses security mechanisms and steal sensitive information like passwords, personal and financial data which they send back to the hacker. Remote attackers use backdoor Trojans as part of an exploit to gain unauthorized access to a computer and take control of it without your knowledge. Read Danger: Remote Access Trojans.

If your computer was used for online banking, has credit card information or other sensitive data on it, all passwords should be changed immediately to include those used for banking, email, eBay, paypal and online forums. You should consider them to be compromised. They should be changed by using a different computer and not the infected one. If not, an attacker may get the new passwords and transaction information. If using a router, you need to reset it with a strong logon/password so the malware cannot gain control again. and credit card institutions should be notified of the possible security breach. Because your computer was compromised please read How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

Although the infection was identified and removed, your PC has likely been compromised and there is no way to be sure the computer can ever be trusted again. It is dangerous and incorrect to assume that because this malware has been removed the computer is now secure. In some instances an infection may have caused so much damage to your system that it cannot be completely cleaned or repaired. The malware may leave so many remnants behind that security tools cannot find them. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of malware, the best course of action is to wipe the drive clean, reformat and reinstall the OS. Please read:

"When should I re-format? How should I reinstall?"
"Help: I Got Hacked. Now What Do I Do?"
"Where to draw the line? When to recommend a format and reinstall?"

Please download DrWeb-CureIt and save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.

Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with Dr.Web CureIt as follows:
  • Double-click on drweb-cureit.exe to start the program.
  • Cancel any prompts to download the latest CureIt version and click Start.
  • At the prompt to "Start scan now", click Ok. Allow the setup.exe/driver to load if asked by any of your security programs.
  • The Express scan will automatically begin.
(This is a short scan of files currently running in memory, boot sectors, and targeted folders).
  • If prompted to download the Full version Free Trial, just ignore and click the X to close the window.
  • If an infected object is found, you will be prompted to move anything that cannot be cured. Click Yes to All.
  • When complete, click Select All, then choose Cure > Move incurable.
(This will move any detected files to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if they can't be cured)
  • Now put a check next to Complete scan to scan all local disks and removable media.
  • In the top menu, click Settings > Change settings, and UNcheck "Heuristic analysis" under the "Scanning" tab, then click Ok.
  • Back at the main window, click the green arrow "Start Scanning" button on the right under the Dr.Web logo.
  • When the scan is complete, a message will be displayed at the bottom indicating if any viruses were found.
  • Click "Yes to all" if asked to cure or move the file(s) and select "Move incurable".
  • In the top menu, click file and choose save report list.
  • Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.
  • Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.
  • Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web in your next reply. (You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report)

WOW! Thanks, xblinx. I knew things were bad lately but not this bad. I am trying to download DrWeb-CureIt but it isn't loading. Now I am paranoid. I will keep trying then scan and post logs. In the meantime, any hints about getting DrWeb to download/run? At what point do I ditch the machine completely if it is infected so bad.

Can you download Dr Web to a flash drive or CD from another machine and then run it on the infected machine?

Is your F drive an external hard drive or something similar? If so, it seems to be infected as well

Update Malwarebytes. Once updated, Click the Perform Full scan bubble/button and then click scan. BE SURE that ALL of your drives are selected (C, D and whatever other drives you have installed). Then click Scan

Paste the report in your reply.

xblindx, The F drive is my external/removable harddrive.
Here is the log from my last run of Mbam. I did update it first.
I haven't used my thumb drive in over a year. Should I scan that too?

Thanks for your continued help.

It wouldn't hurt to scan the thumb drive as well. To do so, just do the "full scan" but un-check all drives except for the thumb drive so that it only scans that.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune & save it to your desktop. alternate download link DO NOT use yet.
Please download and install SUPERAntiSpyware Free
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and unzip into the program's folder.)
  • Under the "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences... button.
  • Click the "General and Startup" tab, and under Start-up Options, make sure "Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts" box is unchecked.
  • Click the "Scanning Control" tab, and under Scanner Options, make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen and exit the program.
  • Do not run a scan just yet.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • If you use Firefox browser click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  • If you use Opera browser click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Note: On Vista, "Windows Temp" is disabled. To empty "Windows Temp" ATF-Cleaner must be "Run as an Administrator".

Scan with SUPERAntiSpyware as follows:
  • Launch the program and back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan and click "Next".
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes" and reboot normally.
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.

Fantastic!

Other problem and some questions...

1. My System Restore was disabled by a trojan a while back. A local computer shop worked on my machine but the SR function never worked again. Here's the error message I get when I try to run it.
"System Restore is not able to protect your computer. Please restart your computer and then run System Restore again."

there is no way to be sure the computer can ever be trusted again.

2. These articles are very unsettling. Is this still the case? Can I never trust that my machine is secure? This would really render my machine useless if I can't access my accounts and make transactions safely.

3. If I get a new machine and transfer files is there a chance of the RAT transfering as well, even to a MAC (not jumping ship, just asking)?

4. What anti-virus/malware software should I download and use and how often should I run scans?

5. I never downloaded Service Pack 3 since it is so big and don't update that frequently. Seems the updates just give MS more access to info about my computer/surfing.
How critical is SP 3 and staying updated? What do you recommend for updates and staying current?

There were some other quirky things, but I'll wait and see if they are still happening before posting about them.

Thanks again for your assistance.

Did you try enabling it or actually doing a restore? If it isn't already turned on, do so first.

It could possibly be the case that there are remnants on your machine, if you are extremely worried about this, you could just do a reformat which would get rid of everything.

If I get a new machine and transfer files is there a chance of the RAT transfering as well, even to a MAC (not jumping ship, just asking)?

If you backup .exe files, then yes there is a change. MAC's though, I'm not sure if Windows infections run on MACS?

What anti-virus/malware software should I download and use and how often should I run scans?

For anti-virus software, I recommend Avira AntiVir
Firewall I would choose Comodo

NOTEIf you are going to use Avira AND Comodo, be sure to only install the Firewall portion of Comodo and not the Anti-virus portion. You will be prompted during installation.
On demand scanning I would use MalwareBytes Anti-Malware and SUPERantispyware

And finally, SpywareBlaster which fills the holes in programs that can be exploited, and in effect, prevents you from getting infected in the first place.

Set up Avira to scan and update daily (sometime at night when the machine is not being used)
Scan with Malwarebytes at least once a week, possibly even more than that. The same with SUPER.

I never downloaded Service Pack 3 since it is so big and don't update that frequently. Seems the updates just give MS more access to info about my computer/surfing.

I can't say that SP3 isn't that important of an update, because it does fix several security issues. I would recommend updating to SP3, but if you have problems with it, you should be fine staying with SP2.

Updates are the most important thing you can do to keep yourself up to date with all of the malware on the internet these days. Check for updates frequently and install all available updates for all installed programs (especially MS and Anti-virus/malware products)
