Hello,

I'm running WindowsXP on this PC and Windows2000 running on my other PC. I've got DSL through AT&T-Yahoo!. I have the two computers running through a Router. They are not networked beyond that.

I'm having virus troubles. Last week my computer was assulted by multiple viruses, hijackers and adware. One of them was "Vundo", which I think might be removed now.

I've run scans with a number of programs: Symantec AntiVirus; Avast; CCleaner; Kaspersky; SmitfraudFix; SpybotSD; SuperAntiSpyware; VundoFix; BitDefender Online Scan; and I ran a HijackThis Report.

Many of the problems I was having are gone, or at least they're not active. :flowers: I was having alot of trouble getting to the Microsoft Update site and some of the anti-virus programs wouldn't run, even in safe-mode. I had all the Vundo craziness happen, but I didn't fall for their tricks. There were Porn sites that would pop-up. My home page kept changing from my default home page. Also, if I opened a program or played an online game, the program would close down for no reason.

One problem I'm still having is that my speakers went off and they don't work anymore. I was having a warning appear stating: Your Audio/Video Codecs are corrupted. Unable to play: AVI; ASF; WMV; AVS; FLV; MKV; MOV; 3GP; MP4; MPG; MPEG; MP3; AAC; WAV; WMA; CDA; FLAC; MYA; MID.

I've tried to find the correct Audio/Video Codecs to download with no success. The Windows Update didn't find any to download.

I made a mistake  and deleted the drivers for my modem-card and now I can't get it to work. I don't need it right now, but I think it should work in case I do need it in the future.

Another issue is that my downloads are alot slower, about half as fast as they had been. This I've noticed on both my computers.

So, I think that's it for now. I know there's probably more going on that I'm not aware of. Let me know if any of the anti-virus scan reports will be of some help to you. You'll probably have to walk me through the retrieval of these reports.

Thank-you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
Shaunn

Please post your Superantispyware log.

Also, do you have both Symantec antivirus and Avast! installed? if so, I do not recommend that you have more than one anti virus product installed and running on your computer at a time. The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them can cause other anti virus products to cause "false alarms". It can also lead to a clash as both products fight for access to files which are opened again this is the resident/automatic protection. In general terms, the two programs may conflict and cause:
1) False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.
2) System Performance Problems: Your system may lock up due to both products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Therefore please go to add/remove in the control panel and remove either Symantec or Avast!.

Some types of malware will disable MBAM and other security tools. If MBAM will not install, try renaming it.

  • Before saving any of your security programs, rename them first. For example, before you save Malwarebytes', rename it to something like MBblah.exe and then click on Save and save it to your desktop. Same thing after you install it. Before running it, rename the main executable file first

Right-click on the mbam-setup.exe file and change the .exe extension to .bat, .com, .pif, or .scr and then double-click on it to run.

If after installation, MBAM will not run, open the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder in Program Files, right-click on mbam.exe and change the .exe as noted above. Then double-click on it to run..
  • Another work around is by not using the mouse to install it, Just use the arrow keys, tab, and enter keys.

~ Courtesy of boopme

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here or here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.

Please include the following in your reply:

Hi xblindx,

Thank-you for your help.

In regards to the question of am I running both Avast! and Symantec Anti-spyware, it turns out that Avast! is not installed on my computer. I think this is one of the programs that I couldn't get to open. It's not on the list of programs in the Add/Delete Programs list.

Below are my logs from SuperAntiSpyware you requested. I say "logs" because I actually ran SuperAntiSpyware three separate times. The first two were run on 05/16/2009, and the other was run on 05/19/2009. I've labled each log so it's clear which is which.

** Note #1: There are files in the first two reports that belong to "Regina Grimsby". There is no Regina Grimsby using this computer but this file keeps coming up as having virus issues. I didn't want to just delete it though because I want to get your ok before I do. You may have some guidance into where I should look for a possible profile existing for this name.

After some exploring, I've discovered that there is another file for someone by the name of "Andrey_Kalo". This profile has the same information that "Regina Grimsby" has. It has pictures and documents, just like the Regina file.

** Note #2: I tried to retrieve the log from Malwarebytes Anti-Malware program, but I cannot open the program. There are two small boxes that open. Here's what they say.

#1) vbAccelerator SGrid II Control
! Runtime error '0'

After I click on 'ok', the next box opens.

#2) Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
! Runtime error '440'
Automation error

I did not save the Notepad copy of the Log to my desktop like I usually do. However, when the Notepad copy opened, I did click on "File" and then clicked on "Save". I don't know where that actually saved to ~ maybe I can find that copy if you know where to look.

** Note #3: When I was running the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware program, and closed the text report, Symantec opened up a window that said:

Scan type: Auto-Protect Scan
Event: Threat Found!
Threat: Hacktool.Rootkit
File: C:\WINDOWS\system32\stalker.sys
Location: C:\WINDOWS\system32
Computer: DYLAN
User: User1
Action taken: Clean failed : Quarantine failed : Delete succeeded : Access denied

To find the other user accounts, lets check using this method

Start->Control Panel->User Accounts

Do you see the 2 accounts listed there?

The Malwarebytes logs should be saved within the program. If you can't get the program to run, try renaming it per the instructions above.

Hello please run Part 1 of S!Ri's SmitfraudFix
Please download SmitfraudFix

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Hello xblindx and boopme,

Note #1: I checked the "User Accounts". There are two: Dylan (Computer Administrator), and Guest (Guest account is off).

Note #2: Regarding the Malwarebytes logs. I am still unable to open the program. I tried changing the .exe extension to .bat, .com, .pif, and .scr.

The same two small boxes appeared:

#1) vbAccelerator SGrid II Control
! Runtime error '0'

After I click on 'ok', the next box opens.

#2) Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
! Runtime error '440'
Automation error

Note #3: Here is the SmitfraudFix Report:

hi Shaunn. Can you disable Norton's and run past 2 of S!Ri's SmitfraudFix and try MBAM again while didabled.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Hi boopme,

I tried to run MBAM again with Symantec disabled in Safe-mode, and it wouldn't open.

It came back with Error-Code 707(3).

Should I remove the program and download it again? If so, should I do anything different, and would you please give me the link?

Try Mbam again now after smitfraud has run.

will DrWeb run?
Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page.

Please download DrWeb-CureIt and save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.

Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with Dr.Web CureIt as follows:
  • Double-click on launch.exe to open the program and click Start. (There is no need to update if you just downloaded the most current version
  • Read the Virus check by DrWeb scanner prompt and click Ok where asked to Start scan now? Allow the setup.exe to load if asked by any of your security programs.
  • The Express scan will automatically begin.
(This is a short scan of files currently running in memory, boot sectors, and targeted folders).
  • If prompted to dowload the Full version Free Trial, ignore and click the X to close the window.
  • If an infected object is found, you will be prompted to move anything that cannot be cured. Click Yes to All. (This will move any detected files to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if they can't be cured)
  • After the Express Scan is finished, put a check next to Complete scan to scan all local disks and removable media.
  • In the top menu, click Settings > Change settings, and uncheck "Heuristic analysis" under the "Scanning" tab, then click Apply, Ok.
  • Back at the main window, click the green arrow "Start Scanning" button on the right under the Dr.Web logo.
  • Please be patient as this scan could take a long time to complete.
  • When the scan has finished, a message will be displayed at the bottom indicating if any viruses were found.
  • Click Select All, then choose Cure > Move incurable.
  • In the top menu, click file and choose save report list.
  • Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.
  • Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.
  • Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web in your next reply. (You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report)

How do I get help? Who is helping me?For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear....Become a BleepingComputer fan: Facebook

Hello Boopme,

I'm sorry about my late posting. I didn't get a email notification that you had responded, so I didn't know until I checked in on this site.

I ran Mbam again and it worked this time. I ran a quick scan first, then ran a complere scan. * See results below.

I was also able to run the DrWeb-CureIt scans. * See results below.

I have a couple of questions:

1) During the DrWeb-CureIt scan, I noticed that a number of the things it found were actually in quarantine in a different anti-virus program. Is it ok that DrWeb handled these viruses?

2) Also, DrWeb prompted me about what to do with the first three viruses it found. These were also in a different anti-virus program. I wasn't sure how to respond, so I said to do nothing with them. Was this the correct thing to do?

Hi, Dr Web, Did go thru Norton's quarantine and move some to it;s own, Now are you running anything other than Norton and Spybot?
I would empty the qyarantines, Then rerun Drweb as it found sometings the others haven't. Next please Update and rerun SUPER please. I think we are almost done.
Post 2 logs.

Hi boobme,

1) Besides Norton and Spybot, I'm also running SUPERAntiSpyware.

2) I'm not sure what you meant by "empty out the quarantines". Did you want me to delete the things that are in the quarantine or did you mean something else. I might need you to give me a step by step for this.

So...whatever it was, I didn't do it.

3) FYI - Note: After we're done with this part of it, I do have a couple of other things to tackle. :flowers:

4) Thanks for your help and let me know what to do next.

5) Here are the logs:

Tell me how the PC is runniing after this.

Rerun MBAM like this:

Open MBAM in normal mode and click Update tab, select Check for Updates, when done
