So just yesterday, a strange computer protection application called "Privacy Center" found its way onto my Windows Vista system. It informed me, like a normal computer protection system would, that I had numerous cookie, viral and spiral infiltration into my system due possibly from visits to adult, explicit sites. I had visited no such sites.

It continued to hassle me from my sidebar, constantly telling me I had this dangerous situation on my computer. I finally accessed the system, and it looked fairly legitimate. It scanned my computer and than told me it could clean my system only if I updated my licenses for their protection on the internet. It would cost a significant amount of money to renew these license. I had never bought these "licenses" in the first place.

By now I was suspicious of the legitimacy of this protection (I know, took me long enough) and decided I would quit the program and deal with it later. When I tried to "x" out of it, a window popped up saying that it would be dangerous to not fix this now. Than a weird female voice came though my speakers and in a strange possibly Russian accent, told me that my system was under threat and that I needed to fix it right away.

Again I was rather alarmed and decided to check my own fire wall and system protection, but it found nothing on the system that was wrong. I found that my system, my internet, everything was working as normal, so I continued what I was doing. The "Privacy Center" continued to tell me from the sidebar that I had this problem I needed to fix, periodically ever 10 mins or so.

Later that night for whatever reason, my iTunes wouldn't open when I tried to. I decided to restart my system. The computer rebooted to the login page. I logged in and the system started to load. The computer was black while loading and then that female voice came over the speakers again, while nothing else was up. It said the same thing as before and then the "Privacy Center" applicaton alone loaded. It scanned like before but then froze in the middle of its scan. Nothing else would load, not even the Windows back system. I was able to access the task manager and ended the "Privacy Center" application, but it was the only thing running. When I end the PCenter window pops up telling me "pc.exe is not responding. I close that to because I cant do anything else. Then the screen goes blank except for the mouse. I can still access Windows Task manager, but nothing else. Several processes are running and I could end them if I wanted to, but I cant access anything else.

It does this every time I have tried to reboot.

I would really appreciate ANY help or advice that anyone has. I'm new to this site and not extraordinarily computer savvy (as you could probably tell), so i'll need pretty detailed instructions,if you can.

Thanks.

Welcome to BC
What you have is a rouge spyware program

The process of cleaning your computer may require you to temporarily disable some security programs. If you are using SpyBot Search and Destroy, please refer to Note 2 at the bottom of this page.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note:
-- If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Note 2:
-- MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes (like Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere with the fix or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please disable such programs until disinfection is complete or permit them to allow the changes. To disable these programs, please view this topic: How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs

Thank you a ton!
Okay, so after following your instructions I can access files and open some programs (i.e. microsoft word). However, the Privacy Center thing is still the first and only thing to load on my computer when I boot up. And after I kill it via task manager, the screen remains vacant. What else should I do?

Here is the report your program gave me.

There has been no real change now except that the voice that greets me everytime I login is delayed about 20 seconds now
Also I could access any files while I was in "safe mode" so i couldn't run the SUPERAntiSpyware Scan. I ran it on the regular setting instead.
Here are the two logs.

Please download Dr.Web CureIt, the free version & save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.

Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with Dr.Web CureIt as follows:
  • Double-click on launch.exe to open the program and click Start. (There is no need to update if you just downloaded the most current version
  • Read the Virus check by DrWeb scanner prompt and click Ok where asked to Start scan now? Allow the setup.exe to load if asked by any of your security programs.
  • The Express scan will automatically begin.
(This is a short scan of files currently running in memory, boot sectors, and targeted folders).
  • If prompted to dowload the Full version Free Trial, ignore and click the X to close the window.
  • If an infected object is found, you will be prompted to move anything that cannot be cured. Click Yes to All.
  • When complete, click Select All, then choose Cure > Move incurable.
(This will move any detected files to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if they can't be cured)
  • Now put a check next to Complete scan to scan all local disks and removable media.
  • In the top menu, click Settings > Change settings, and UNcheck "Heuristic analysis" under the "Scanning" tab, then click Ok.
  • Back at the main window, click the green arrow "Start Scanning" button on the right under the Dr.Web logo.
  • When the scan is complete, a message will be displayed at the bottom indicating if any viruses were found.
  • Click "Yes to all" if asked to cure or move the file(s) and select "Move incurable".
  • In the top menu, click file and choose save report list.
  • Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.
  • Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.
  • Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web in your next reply. (You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next, update mbam then exit all applications
Mbam needs to be the only thing running on your computer
Run a full scan and post the results along with the Dr. Web log

Having grandkids is God's way of giving you a 2nd chance because you were too busy working your butt off the 1st time around
Do not send me PMs with problems that should be posted in the forums. Keep it in the forums, so everyone benefits
