There is a potential problem with this technique ... apparently having an overly large HOSTS file can slow down a system pretty significantly, due I _think_ to the fact that the HOSTS file is periodically processed & cached (by the DNS Client service, iirc)

netarc, that problem only effects Win2000 and XP. The fist link above gives a fix for that problem.
