problem in shutting down

whenever i shut down my laptop(compaq presario cq40) it automatically restarts....

Do you have automatic installation of critical updates operative?

Any error messages?

Try going to start menu > run, and type in "shutdown.exe". If it works, then the problem is in the link, if not, then the problem is with the file.
