I am helping a friend that has a HP Pavilion that is not booting up. It asks me how I would like to load XP Home. The screen that shows:
Safe Mode
Safe Mode With Networking
Command Prompt Safe Mode?
Last known good configuration
Start Windows Normally

When I select any of them, it will go to a black screen, then nothing happens except safe mode then the screen fills with all sorts of files and hangs there.

If it helps, I pulled the HD out of that computer and put in mine and it did the same thing. I made it into a Slave drive and got the Pics and Documents off of it. Any ideas where to look or what it is? I am thinking something with XP. Thanks

It sounds like maybe a corrupt driver.

If you have the XP disk for it do a XP repair.

If that doesn't work . since you already got the personal files off, do clean install of XP.

If neither work the HD is probably bad.

He doesn't have an XP disc. If I had a iso image, maybe I could extract his key somehow.

A working key should be on the XP sticker [COA]

On the case? If I can find an iso image, I will try to load it, can't hurt nothing......
