I recently scanned my computer with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, Spybot Search & Destroy, and Avira AntiVir personal.

MBAM and SB S&D came up with nothing but Avira did. This is the 2nd time this month that Avira detected "appl/psexec.e" found in "C:\System Volume Information". There are 3 different instances in the Quarantine.

Please look through my HJT log to help stop this recurrence.

Also, users on this computer use Firefox Portable from portableapps.com run from 2 different USB drives. Both equppied with the add-ons NoScript, AdBlock Plus, and Web of Trust (WOT) to better protect us from viruses & etc.

Thank you for your time.

Hi syler, thank you for replying to my thread! I'm just happy that it has finally been replied to.

I recently scanned with MBAM, Spybot S&D, and Avira so far nothing has come up but I'd like someone around here to reassure me.

I ran RSIT and it only came up with the log.txt should I run it again?

Hi,

I can't see any signs of infection in your logs, I belive the detection from Avira is to do with Combofix.

Please download OTCleanIt and save it to Desktop.
  • Make sure you have internet connection..
  • Double-click OTCleanIt.exe
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes
Next
  • Click Start, right click My Computer and select properties.
  • Select the System Restore tab then check the box "Turn off System Restore".
  • Click Apply then Ok, then restart your computer
  • Now follow these steps again, but instead of checking "Turn off System Restore" Uncheck it.
Now that you have cleaned out you restore points you need to set a new restore point
  • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
  • Select "Create a restore point" then click Next.
  • Type a name under Restore point description then click Create.

That's a relief thank you. Another reason why I was posting here is because I had a thread about a month ago in here and it was closed because of my inactivity. I'm sure there were more things I needed to do to clean my system that the person who was instructing me so I decided to come back now. I believe I was dealing with an instance of Smitfraud detected by Spybot S&D.

=== OTCleanIt got rid of RSIT off of my desktop and after the instructed reboot it got rid of itself I believe.

=== After rebooting the computer to clean out my System Restore Points I had SUPERAntiSpyware updated.

=== Created a new Restore Point.

Here's the RSIT logs.

I have another question, if you don't mind. Would it be necessary to scan with SAS? The only reason I don't scan with it [often] is because I heard that it detects better while running in Safe Mode, even so, it just takes forever to scan.

Hi PixelPlay,

You can do scan with SAS, it still works good in normal mode. You logs are looking good just a couple of things to do.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This changed from what we know in 2006 read this article:

http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

I suggest you remove the program now. Click on start > run > and then paste the following into the "open" field: appwiz.cpl and press OK. From within Add or Remove Programs uninstall the following if they exist: Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player.

Next

Install a Firewall
I can not stress how important it is that you use a third party Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is
succeptible to being hacked and taken over. Windows firewall is good for blocking inbound connections but it does not block
outbound connections. So if Malware manages to get onto your computer it will be able to send data out when it wants.
Here are some free firewalls I would recomend, only install one of these.

Zone Alarm
comodo Note: Only Install the Firewall as a standalone if you already have an AntiVirus installed on your computer.

After you install the third party firewall, please disable your Windows firewall. Please go to My Computer >> Control Panel >> Windows Firewall and choose Off (not recommended) option. Then please click Apply and Ok.

Next

Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Then please post back here with the Kaspersky results and a fresh HijackThis log.

Thanks

Hi syler,

Wow, I totally read an article regarding Viewpoint Manager I didn't know I had it!

I have a question before fully installing a firewall.
First, I'd like to thank you for recommending me a couple firewalls I was going to ask about one after getting all these logs read.
Also, I've decided to download Comodo as the red side note stated "Only Install the Firewall as a standalone if you already have an AntiVirus installed on your computer." since I already have Avira installed.

When I get to the site to download Comodo you linked me to it says "Download Comodo Firewall + AntiVirus for Windows" the "+ AntiVirus" worries me will this interfere with Avira?

I've downloaded but yet to install Comodo so I'm just waiting for you to reassure me on my concern. Thank you.

Hi PixelPlay,

It also says the following on the Comodo site.

Installation Options:
During the setup process you will be given the choice to:

* Install the AntiVirus as a standalone
* Install the Firewall as a standalone
* Install both Firewall and AntiVirus

So you have to choose what you want to install during setup, good choice on Comodo, I use it to :thumbup2:

Hi syler,

Oops, sorry, I sometimes jump ahead.

=== I installed Comodo as a standalone firewall.

=== I had an issue where the malware scan or update thing stalled so I had to end the application through Windows Task Manager.
After ending it the Comodo install Wizard came up and asked to restart my computer I did so and made sure to check for updates for Comodo.
I did not know how to relaunch the malware scan.

=== I have a couple questions before continuing with your instructions.

Why is it necessary to disable Windows Firewall?

How do I know that Comodo Firewall will cover Windows Firewall?

I have Comodo running and haven't disabled Windows Firewall yet can they run together?

Sorry to keep stalling this process with questions. I have really appreciated your help so far, thank you.

It is necessary to disable Windows Firewall because, you should only have one firewall running, just like
you should only have one AntiVirus running, because they may cause conflicts with each other. The reason
I asked you to install a third party firewall anyway, is because windows firewall does not do the full job, it
only blocks inbound connections and not outbound connection, also firewalls like Comodo have alot more
options that can be usefull :thumbup2:

Alrighty I trust you. :thumbup2: Wow, I'm lucky I've been able to catch you online I didn't expect quick responses like this!

After I disabled Windows Firewall I got 2 alerts from Comodo I had them block because I was unsure on what to do.

Firewall Events
Application - Action - Protocol

C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe - Blocked - TCP
C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe - Blocked - UDP

I wasn't sure if I'm allowed to post the Source/Destination IP or Source/Destination Port

Are these necessary to allow?

I'm not sure if I should be concerning this to you, sorry.

I'll start on the Kaspersky Online Scan in the meantime.

EDIT: Also will the "Windows Firewall is off" alert go away from my tray icons or is it something that I have to live with?

svchost.exe is part of your OS so I would allow them, you are proberbly going to get quite a few alerts from Comodo
especially at first. You should proberbly try and read up on it so you can get used to it and figure out what to allow and
what not to allow. I found this which should give you some good information about it, and if you have any other questions
on it you could try asking here.

That shouldn't be popping up if Comodo is turned on, it can be stopped, but I want to see your Kaspersky
and HijackThis log before looking at any other issues.

Thanks :thumbup2:
