Greetings again,

I suspect I have a virus. Started by noticing that the on access scan, bufferoverflow protectiion in mcafee 8.5i was disabling itself periodically. Bootup is extremely slow. Opening applicatiosn is slow (minutes).

Was able to update virus files for McAfee, and AdAware, and Malware bytes, all ran with no detections. But something is wrong. Do not see any processes running that look out of the ordinary.

Need help!

Have computer disconnected from net right now, accessing forums and tools on another machine. Can reconnect, but don't want to just leave it with access unattended.

Runnign XP SP2 (keeping up with security updates, just don't want SP3), McAfee 8.5i, pROVENTIA Desktop 8.0.812.1941 (McAfee and Proventia are enterprise editions for home use)

SAS ran. Found 65 tracking cookies, and the power management scheme. Quaranteened and deleted all.
On reboot, received a "Error Loading NVCPL.DLL Access is Denied"
was very slow booting, and very slow to open SAS.
Switched to admin profile, (could not get SAS to open the log file, remembered SAFE mode was run in Admin account).
On log in to Admin, got SCAN32.exe Application error. The instruction at 0x0 referenced memory at 0x0. The memory could not be read.
2 minutes later, as the admin desktop opened, got a second SCan 32 error splash/report this to Microsoft window.. Sent the report.

Log will be in the next post, if I can get the infected computer to open Firefox and connect.

[edit]
xBlindx,

I am beginning to suspect maybe this is a McAfee corruption problem. Started digging thru the application, system and security logs, and noticed that whenver the virus scan services were disabled, things ran fast. Manually disabled them, and confirmed. Re-enabled, and things crawled. DId a McAfee repair, then reloaded all the patches/updates, and things appear to be well. Rescannig for virus/malware now. I have posted a DDS log and attachment over in the Malware removal forum, and noted this thread in that one. Would like to get a log review/whatever just to make sure that it was due to a failed update/corrupted file, and not some malware.

Hello dellphinus,

I see that you have an HJT log posted here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/226951/mcafee-disables-itself-very-slow-bootop/

We do not allow more than one topic for the same computer and the same issue as this causes confusion, and in this case may make the disinfection process more difficult.

This leaves you with a choice:

1) Have this thread reopened and the HiJack This log topic deleted

OR

2) Keep this thread closed and wait for assistance in the HiJack This log forum. Please note that that forum is VERY busy.

Please send a Private Message indicating your choice.

Assuming you wish assistance in the HiJack This forum, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a HJT Team member, nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show in the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer.

From this point on the HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean.

Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the HJT Team members are EXTREMELY busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond. Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response but your log will be reviewed and answered as soon as possible

To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic. Good luck with your log.

Orange Blossom
Help us help you. If HelpBot replies, you MUST follow step 1 in its reply so we know you need help.
