Hi ydnewp.

Download AboutBuster 5, unzip all files to a new folder on your desktop.
Start AboutBuster, click update and download any found.
Exit from aboutbuster after updating, we will run a scan later in safemode.

Download CWShredder
Wait until later to run the scan.

Some files and folders may be hidden , change these settings to show them.
Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options.
Click on the View tab
Place a checkmark at "Show hidden files and folders"
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files"
Uncheck "hide extensions for known file types"
click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

Print out the following instructions to use while in safemode, or copy and paste into notepad.

Reboot into safemode
Restart the computer, as soon as the BIOS has finished loading, begin tapping the F8 key .
Continue to do so until the Windows Advanced Options menu appears.
Using the arrow keys, scroll to and select Safemode, then press Enter.

Please click the start button, then click Run...
type in services.msc and click OK.
Scroll down the services list to Workstation NetLogon Service
Right click it and choose properties
On the general tab, at service status, click stop if it's started
At startup type: click the drop down box arrow and change it to disabled
Click apply then ok, exit from services.

Scan with hijackthis and checkmark these lines:
(some lines may be missing in safemode, fix all found)

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\wwrzg.dll/sp.html#28129
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\wwrzg.dll/sp.html#28129

O2 - BHO: Class - {0F97ADD7-AD8D-6BF8-1F9C-07FA16D0FFA3} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\sdknq32.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [d3yv.exe] C:\WINDOWS\d3yv.exe

O23 - Service: Workstation NetLogon Service ( 11F#`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\msht32.exe

Close all open windows, except hijackthis, and click fix checked.

Delete the following files marked in bold:
C:\WINDOWS\msht32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\wwrzg.dll
C:\WINDOWS\d3yv.exe

Remain in safemode.

Open CWShredder and click on fix to run
It will remove all bad files found, click next then exit.

Start AboutBuster.
Run AboutBuster by clicking begin removal.
After it's finished, run it again.
It will save the AB Logfile.txt to the AboutBuster folder.
Include AB logfile.txt in your next post.

Clean out temporary and TIF files.

Click the start button, then click on Run..... and type in the box: cleanmgr.
Let it scan your system for files to remove.
Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:
Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

Reboot into normal mode.

Some lines may still appear in hijackthis in normal mode.
Scan with hijackthis and place a checkmark at these lines:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\wwrzg.dll/sp.html#28129
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page =

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

Close all browsers and open windows, except hijackthis, and click fix checked.

Run an Online Scan at Panda's Active Scan

Reboot after the online scan.
Scan with hijackthis, post a fresh log and the AB logfile.tx from aboutbuster.

You ran the older version, AboutBuster 4, and failed to update it.
The current version is AboutBuster 5.0 reference file 30.
Fortunately, the fix appears to have succeeded anyway.
No signs of the hijacker remain in your log.

How is your computer running now?

I have some suggestions to help prevent malware from returning.
The first and most important is to visit windows update, download service pack 2 and any remaining critical updates.
I also use and recommend the following free programs.

SpywareBlaster - Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.

Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware (Beta)
Detects and removes known spyware from your system. Includes real time protection to monitor changes to your system and provides the option for you to allow or block the change.

IE-SPYAD is a Registry file (IE-ADS.REG) that adds a long list of sites and domains associated with known advertisers, marketers, and crapware pushers to the Restricted sites zone of Internet Explorer.

Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts File

Visit these sites for more information on securing your computer.
How did I get infected?

Thank you, thank you, thank you. May all good things come your way and to all your generations.

The computer seems to be OK and Norton has been gloriously quite this morning.

The only think that is still happening is that as soon as boot up the puter and log on as me, it takes me online - now it's to benign google. I never had it set to do that before and would prefer not to go online first thing in the morning. Where would I look to turn that off?

Glad we could help.

Internet Explorer is set to start up in the registry.
You can fix this line in hijackthis to stop that:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iexplore.exe] C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe

An alternate way to control all start up programs is to download Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel
Download the stand alone version and open the program. Internet Explorer will be listed on the HKLM tab.
Simply uncheck it then click OK and it will not start at boot up.

You have a few more programs running at start up that you could choose to uncheck in the Startup Control Panel program.
They are not malware, just not really needed.
Click them for more information:
Creative Technology diagent.exe
ViewMgr - ViewMgr.exe
QuickTime task - qttask.exe
Creative Register Reminder-updreg.exe

Edit: added updreg

Let's clean out your system restore points and see if that's what norton is complaining about. It can't access anything located in system restore.

Right click the My Computer icon, click on Properties.
Click on the System Restore tab.
Put a check mark next to 'Turn off System Restore on All Drives'.
Click the 'OK' button.
You will be prompted to restart the computer. Click Yes.

Repeat the steps except remove the checkmark at 'Turn off System Restore on All Drives'.
This will create a clean restore point.

Scan with norton.
Did it find anything?
Post any file paths that it shows.

I had turned off system restore before cleaning the system and didn't turn it back on until I was done following your instructions.

The only time I got the trojan warning was when I did a scan with HijackThis. I ran norton and found the bugger - C:\Windows\System32\atlyn32.exe. I got it quarantined and alls been quite since. A left over maybe?

Now I just have to get it to stop going online when it boots and I should be in good shape.

If I use regedit and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/WINDOWS/RUN there is an entry iexplore.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe. Can I just delete this and will that stop it from running on boot?

Yea I know you said to dl a program to do this but I'd rather not install another program if it's not necessary.

Thanks for all your help.

I leave cleaning out system restore until the system is clean in case something goes wrong with the fix. In that situation, even an infected restore point is better than none.

The atlyn32.exe was part of coolwebsearch. It didn't show up in hijackthis because it was not active, but still a good idea to get rid of it.

As I said before, you can stop IE from starting by fixing this line in hijackthis:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iexplore.exe] C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe

That is the same key you referred to in regedit and the same change that Startup control panel would make. It's safer to let hijackthis fix it than manually fixing it in the registry.

No, it's not necessary to download Startup Control panel. It's just a very easy way to control all startups. It is not really installed, the .exe file runs from wherever you place it.
