My brother needs a new computer. He was thinking about a desktop but needs one with a good parts warranty were they don't jerk you around. I have had nothing but misery dealing with HP and Toshiba. I have had good luck with Dell in the past but today I called them to get him some parts that need replacement and it took three hours of interrogation. Apple tech support is super cool but he can't afford a mac.

Please recommend who you think is easy to deal with. Or share your horror stories so I know who to stay away from.

Your brother could check with some reputable computer techs in his area. Most have a basic build-find out what that includes and then ask how much more if other things are wanted. (ex. graphic card, sound card, card reader, etc)
If he has a desktop now, he won't need a new monitor, mouse, or keyboard.
Ask about the warranty-how long and what it covers. Pay attention to what they tell you-my warranty is for 3 years IF I take it in every 6 months so they remove the side of the case and clean the innards.

After he gets the info, he can compare the features and the price with Dell, etc.

The only drawback to a shop-built system is even though the shop may have been in business for a while and is reputable, it may not be there in a year or two.

If you are near here Micro Center: Northern Virginia/Fairfax. I use the one in NJ by me. Always had a good experience,

Good ideas. My dad had a custom notebook and desktop made by some local guys and he hasn't had a problem. I will relay these ideas, thanks for your help.
