I believe I was recently infected with Sysguard. I ran MBAM and Spybot and was able to remove most if not all of the virus. But now when I reboot my system I cannot access anything unless I am in safe mode. My desktop has a white background and says "Active Desktop Recovery" and runs extremely slow. I cannot even access the taskbar manager to restart the computer. So my guess is that something is still there. Here is the hijackthis log (which I ran in safe mode)

Just wanted to add that I can access programs but the computer just takes forever to load everything. I was able to reset my desktop and also ran ATF cleaner and eliminated a lot of my temp files. The computer is still running extremely slow however.

Anybody? I have also run SuperAntiSpyware and no infections found. So MalwareBytes, SpyBot, and SuperAntiSpyware have supposedly cleared out the malicious items but my computer is ridiculously slow and the internet is turned off. WinPatrol gives me alerts of new startup items detected.

Hello

While we understand your frustration at having to wait, please note that Bleeping Computer deals with several hundred requests for assistance such as yours on a daily basis. As a result, our backlog is quite large as are other comparable sites that help others with malware issues. Although our HJT Team members work on hundreds of requests each day, they are all volunteers who work logs when they can and are able to do so. No one is paid by Bleeping Computer for their assistance to our members.

Further, our malware removal staff is comprised of team members with various levels of skill and expertise to deal with thousands of malware variants, some more complex than others. Although we try to take DDS/HJT logs in order (starting with the oldest), it is often the skill level of the particular helper and sometimes the operating system that dictates which logs get selected first. Some infections are more complicated than others and require a higher skill level to remove. Without that skill level attempted removal could result in disastrous results. In other instances, the helper may not be familiar with the operating system that you are using, since they use another. In either case, neither of us want someone to assist you who is not familiar with your issue and attempt to fix it.

We ask that once you have posted your log and are waiting, please DO NOT "bump" your thread or make further replies until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. The reason we ask this or do not respond to your requests is because that would remove you from the active queue that Techs and Staff have access to. The malware staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response, there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond.

That is why I have made an edit to your last post, instead of a reply. Please do not multiple post here, as that only pushes you further down the queue and causes confusion to the staff.

Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response but your log will be reviewed and answered as soon as possible.

Thank you for understanding.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

Thanks for responding.

I have cleaned out a lot of the infection. As of now I just have a search engine redirecter bothering me. I wasn't sure how to attach files so here is the download for the attachment you requested.

Howdy, my name is Hoov, and I will be helping you with your dilemma.

Please make sure you watch this thread for responses. If you click the options tab at the top of your first post, you can select to track this thread.

Here is what I am asking you to do during the repair of your computer

*Tell me everything that you have done, if anything, to try and fix this problem.

*Please only use 1 forum to help clear up your problem. Posting on more than 1 and following instructions from more than 1 forum will cause those helping you to pull out thier hair.

*Follow my instructions - If you can't for some reason, or if you don't understand something, please tell me. If you deviate from my instructions, tell me, it may make a difference on where we go. Don't install anything, even other programs that have nothing to do with security or malware, it could cause things to change, and I would never know it.

*Have faith. I will do all I can to get your computer working, and if I can't - someone else here will know something else to try.

*Stick with me to the end. My aim is to fix your problems, and give you the tools and knowledge to keep this from happening again.

Now onto trying to fix your computer.

If I am helping you and you don't hear from me for 24Hrs, send me a PM Please!

Is it just FireFox that is being redirected, or is it IE as well? Also is it just the Google search being redirected, or does Yahoo or any other search engine gets redirected?

Alright, so far I have run Spybot, Malwarebytes, and Supertantispyware. I also used Combofix and AVZ. These helped me restore my system speed and got rid of most of the symptoms.

I am not 100% certain but I believe this is only effecting Firefox and Google. I ran IE and tried other search engines but did not have any redirect issues. But again I am NOT positive.

Are you behind a router? If you are, are there any other computers connected to the router? Are they also having the same problems?

Open a command prompt (all programs > Accessories > Command Prompt) and type in
Ipconfig /all > ipconfig.txt and then hit enter. Then type in ipconfig.txt to open notepad with the log. Copy it and paste it in to your next response.

I notice that your DNS servers are set to use the OpenDNS servers, are you using this service, or does your ISP use them? If you don't know what I am talking about, can you go to one of the other computers not having a problem and to the ipconfig on it and post the results?

Somebody recommended I switch to open DNS to prevent hijackers. I can switch back if you like I don't think it has made a difference.

And just to add this change was made AFTER the infection happened.

Can you switch back for now? There have been some reports of problems with openDNS servers. Lets make sure it is something else. Let me know if it makes any change.

Can you run ipconfig as before on both the problem system, and a system that is not having a problem?
