Hi,

Thanks for taking the time to read my post, and I look forward to hearing what you all think. To start I am running windows xp media center addition.

Several months ago my computer became infected with a virus. Programs would not open and my computer would end up crashing. After running anti virus programs normally and safe mode I believed I was able to remove the virus as my computer went back to operating normally. However, I did notice a significant slow down in computer speed specifically when I have several programs running at once (more so than before the virus). I am concerned that part of the virus, or another virus may be lurking on my computer and that it is using up ram.

In an effort to figure out why my computer was still running slow/opening up a lot of processes upon starting up I was going through each open process at start up and cross referencing it online. after going through the list of running processes one stood out: rundll32.exe

This process was always running right after start up and it seems to continually stay running unless I end the process. From what I could garner online, although rundll32.exe is normally a valid and vital windows program, it can and does often get infected or replaced by viruses. I was lead to believe that if the process was running at start up and was always running it likely was infected. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately), none of my virus scanning software has detected a problem (McAfee/Windows Live Care).

When searching for removal options online I have also found that if your rundll32.exe files is infected it will show a page icon instead of the standard application symbol and that it will have a size of 32.5kbs. Several of the rundll32.exe files on my computer have page icons and are 32.5kbs. These files are located in the following folders:

C:\i386
C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$
C:\WINDOWS\system32
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386

For all I know these files could be completely normal and not infected. But I am not sure, and have read information to the contrary so I thought I would post here and see what you all thought. I have posted my DDS Report and a Hijackthis report below. I look forward to hearing what you all think. Please let me know if you need anymore information. Thanks.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results, click no to the Optional_Scan
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet. You can find information on A/V control HERE

Orange Blossom :thumbup2:
Help us help you. If HelpBot replies, you MUST follow step 1 in its reply so we know you need help.

omerwinHi ,

Welcome to BC HijackThis forum. I am farbar. I am going to assist you with your problem.

Please refrain from making any changes to your system (updating Windows, installing applications, removing files, etc.) from now on as it might prolong handling your log and make the job for both of us more difficult.

Your log(s) show that you are using so called peer-to-peer or file-sharing programs. These programs allow to share files between users as the name(s) suggest. In today's world the cyber crime has come to an enormous dimension and any means is used to infect personal computers to make use of their stored data or machine power for further propagation of the malware files. A popular means is the use of file-sharing tools as a tremendous amount of prospective victims can be reached through it.

It is therefore possible to be infected by downloading manipulated files via peer-to-peer tools and thus suggested to be used with intense care. Some further readings on this subject, along the included links, are as follows: "File-Sharing, otherwise known as Peer To Peer" and "Risks of File-Sharing Technology."

  • You have the latest version of Java (Java 6 update 13) and it is good. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components:
Click "start" and then "Control Panel" icon.
Doubleclick the "Add or Remove Programs" icon
A list of programs installed will be "populated" this may take a bit of time.

Hi, thanks again for the quick reply.

As per your request I searched add/remove hardware and my program files folder for "MySidesearch Search Assistent" and "MyWebSearch" but did not find either.

I removed the Java Files through add/remove as you requested.

I ran a MBAM scan and will post the log below.

Thanks for the feedback.

MBAM found some trojan DNS changer and their rootkit component. We have to make sure they are all removed and they don't come back.
  • The program I saw on your program list is indeed soething similar but different. It is My Way Search Assistant and comes preinstalled with some Dell computers.

This program is known to be bundled with adware/spyware. You may read more about My Way Search Assistant here:
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/uninstall/...-Assistant.html

Please uninstall My Way Search Assistant:

Also remove the folder in bold: C:\Program Files\MyWay

  • Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3

    * IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Information on A/V control HERE)
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Hi, thanks again for the repeated help and quick responses.

I did not see "My Way Search Assistant" in the Add/Remove Programs.

I did not see the folder "MyWay" in my C drive's programs files folder. Nor did entering C:\Program Files\MyWay as a folder location find the folder.

I also searched for variations of the two names and did not find either.

I was unable to run ComboFix in normal windows start up mode. It would initially give me a loading bar, but after that finished nothing else would open. Furthermore, my computer would then become unresponsive and I would have to force my computer to turn off manually.

However, I was able to run ComboFix in Safe Mode. FYI it did not prompt me to install Microsoft Windows Recovery Console. I will post the log from ComboFix which I ran in Safe Mode below:

Well done and thanks for the detailed feedback. :thumbup2:

My Way Search Assistant was listed on the initial log you attached. If you don't find it on the list of Add/Remove programs it is removed.
  • Please try different things like using internet browsers, updating programs, trying Windows update, etc. and tell me how is your computer running.

  • Please run Hijackthis. Click Do a system scan and save a logfile then copy and paste the content of the log to your reply.

Hi, thanks again for all the help.

I have opened both firefox and IE and installed IE 8 and an update for windows defender and everything seems to be working fine.

I did notice that rundll32.exe was still opening as a process and running continuously unless I shut it down (same condition as per my original post). But if you don't that that is an issue I will stop worrying about it.

As per your request I will now post a HijackThis Log:

  • The logs are looking good.
Glad to see everything is working fine. But I would have waited with installing IE8. The program is still in developing phase and there might be unresolved compatibility problems attached to it.

I did notice that rundll32.exe was still opening as a process and running continuously unless I shut it down

What do you mean by it was opening? If you mean starting, rundll32.exe is a legit windows process, it runs the DLL files needed to be loaded to memory at startup. In this case it loads a DLL from nVida (I assume it is your graphic card). This nVida DLL intializes the clock and memory settings on nVidia based graphics cards. It is up to you to let it start with Windows or not. If you don't want it to start with Windows you may configure it accordingly. It is all about this entry:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup

  • Please open HiJackThis and choose do a system scan only. Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below (if present):

    R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
    O16 - DPF: {30528230-99f7-4bb4-88d8-fa1d4f56a2ab} -

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, including browsers, so that nothing other than HijackThis is open, then click Fix Checked. A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES. Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

  • Go to start > run and copy and paste or type next command in the field then hit enter:

    ComboFix /u

Note: There's a space between Combofix and /

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

It makes a clean Restore Point and clears all the old restore points in order to prevent possible reinfection from an old one through system restore.

The first reboot might be a little slow, the next one will be faster.
Optional Recommendations:
  • I recommend using Site Advisor for safe surfing. It is a free extension both for Internet Explorer and Firefox. When you search a site it gives you an indication of how safe a site is.

  • Install Javacoolsİ SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer and Firefox settings and that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. What you need is updating it once in 2-3 weeks and enabling the restriction. You can find more information and a download link.

  • The rule of thumb: One AntiVirus with real-time protection, one firewall (other than Windows firewall) and one antispyware with real-time protection. Any additional anti-malware shouldn't be running. You might have two or three antispyware but they should not be running at the same time and should be set not to start with Windows.
Happy Surfing!
