Hi,

I recently had problems with my pc at work and Swandog very kindly sorted everything out for me, and I am glad to say everything is perfect. This HJT log is from my home pc as I thought it would be good to sort this machine out as well, altough there are no serious problems I am sure there are some things lurking on the machine. Plus there are other users on this pc that use Incredmail and progrmas like that which personally I don't like that much.

Anyway here is my log if anyone can advise I would be very grateful

Hello blackfolder and welcome to the BC forums. I'm kind of curious about this item:O4 - Global Startup: Startup.exe
Unless you know what this file is let's check it out.

Perform a search for the following file and record the location. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.Startup.exe
Now go to the Jotti's malware scan page and use the buttons at the top of the page to browse to this file(s) on your hard drive to submit for a scan:Startup.exe
Several scanning engines will be used to check the file for any threats. Please post the results of the scans back here.

Cheers.

Hi blackfolder. Thanks for PMing me, I didn't get a notification that you had replied. Ok, let's just leave the Startup.exe file alone since it appears to be Ok at this time. There are a few other items that we should fix so let's take care of those. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download CCleaner and install it but do not run it yet.

It looks like NewDotNet is (or was) installed on this machine but is now corrupted. We need to remove it.
  • Please download LSP-Fix and WinSockFix from the following links and save them to a location you can find later if necessary.
  • To remove New.net:
    • Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs
    • Look for and remove New.Net. If you can't find it, then please go here and follow the removal instructions in Procedure 4 at the bottom of the page.
  • If you can not connect to the Internet after removing New.net, please run the LSP-Fix program I had you download earlier, and click on the finish button. If you still have a problem run the WinSockFix program and click the Fix button. Reboot if you run either tool and you should be able to get back on.
Step #2

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #3

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi...fo/bt_side.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi...arch.yahoo.com/
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi...arch.yahoo.com/
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi...arch.yahoo.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi...arch.yahoo.com/
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\UpdReg.EXE
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Update] mssmgrd.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MyWebSearch Email Plugin] C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\2.bin\mwsoemon.exe
O16 - DPF: {91433D86-9F27-402C-B5E3-DEBDD122C339} - http://www.netvenda.com/sites/gamc5-gb/gbc5/games30.cab
O16 - DPF: {FFFF0003-0001-101A-A3C9-08002B23E0CC} - http://direct.data-line.us/gbn286.exe

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #4

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\PROGRAM FILES\MYWEBS~1\ <--folder (a folder whose name begins with MYWEBS)
C:\PROGRAM FILES\NewDotNet <--folder

Now perform a search for these files and delete all instances. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.mssmgrd.exe
Step #5

Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Step #6

Reboot normally and run at least 2 of the following on-line virus scans:Trend Micro Housecall
BitDefender On-Line Virus Scan
Panda ActiveScan
eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner
Make sure that you choose "fix", "clean" or "autoclean". If you have any files that cannot be disinfected or quarantined automatically then you will need to delete them manually.

Step #7

AdAware SE v1.06

Download, install, update, configure and run a scan with Ad-aware SE v1.06:
  • Download and Install AdAware SE Personal, keeping the default options. However, some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan.
  • Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE.
  • Click on the‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.
  • Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window:
    • In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected in green:
      • Under Safety:
        • Automatically save log-file
      • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
      • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
    • Under Definitions:
      • Prompt to update outdated definitions - set the number of days
  • Click on the ‘Scanning’ button on the left and select in green:
    • Under Driver, Folders & Files:
      • Scan Within Archives
    • Under Select drives & folders to scan:
      • choose all hard drives
    • Under Memory & Registry: all green
      • Scan Active Processes
      • Scan Registry
      • Deep Scan Registry
      • Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
      • Scan my Hosts file
  • Click on the ‘Advanced’ button on the left and select in green:
    • Under Shell Integration:
      • Move deleted files to recycle bin
    • Under Logfile Detail Level: all green
      • include addtional object information
      • DESELECT - include negligible objects information
      • include environment information
    • Under Alternate Data Streams:
      • Don't log streams smaller than 0 bytes
      • Don't log ADS with the following names: CA_INOCULATEIT
  • Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select in green:
    • Under ‘Scanning Engine’:
      • Unload recognized processes during scanning
      • Scan registry for all users instead of current user only
    • Under ‘Cleaning Engine’:
      • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
    • Under Log Files:
      • Include basic Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
      • Include additional Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
      • Please do not check: Include Module list in logfile
  • Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.
  • Click ‘Start’
  • Choose 'Perform Full System Scan'
  • DESELECT "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
  • Click ‘Next’ and Ad-Aware SE will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected and clean automatically.
  • If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries, you will receive a list of what it found in the window
  • Right-click on the list and choose Select All
  • Click the Next button to finish removing the items that were found
  • When finished, REBOOT to complete the removal of what Ad-Aware SE found
Step #8

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Hi OT,

I have completed all those steps, no virus was found on the online searches, the only problem I have come across is 2 error messages that come up when I restart to do with the startup.exe file. The messages are as follows :-

Startup.exe unable to locate component

The application failed to start because MSVCK71.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

and...

Giant Antispyware Data Service: gcasDtserv.exe

The application failed to start because MSVCK71.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

So I think they are both linked to Giant Antispyware? not too sure though

Here is the fresh HJT log. Thanks for your help so far

Hi blackfolder. I can't find any information on that file but I believe you to be correct in tht it is associated with Giant AntiSpyware (which is now MS AntiSpyware). I don't see any reference to Giant inthe log and MSVCK71.dll is not used in MS AntiSpyware. Was Giant AntiSpyware installed onthis machine at one time?

Let's look at a Startup list and see if there is a reference to it in there.

Start HijackThis and follow these steps:
  • Click on Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Check the checkbox for List minor sections (full)
  • Check the checkbox for List empty sections (complete)
  • Click on the Generate StartupList Log button
  • Click the Yes button to create the list
Post the Notepad contents of the Startup list back here and I will review it when it comes in.

Cheers.

OT

Hey OT,

Yes I have put Giant or MS ANtispyware on here, I guess a re-install would sort it ? Here are the results from the scan for you :-

Cheers

Hi blackfolder. It does not appear that there are any calls to Giant or the dll file in those scans. Let's try a registry search and see if the dll file shows up in any registry entries.

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into the new document:

'RegSrch.vbs - Search Registry for input string and display results.
'© Bill James - wgjames@mvps.org
' revised 20 Apr 2001 (parses regfile ~3X faster)
' revised 13 Dec 2001 (added Regedit command line switch for Win2K/WindXP)

sSearchFor = InputBox("This script will search your Registry and find all " & _
"instances of the search string you input."  & vbcrlf & vbcrlf & _
"This search could take several minutes, so please be patient." & _
vbcrlf & vbcrlf & "Enter search string (case insensitive) and " & _
            "click OK...", WScript.ScriptName & " " & Chr(169) & " Bill James")

If sSearchFor = "" Then Cleanup()

Dim StartTime : StartTime = Timer

Dim sRegTmp, sOutTmp, eRegLine, iCnt, sRegKey, aRegFileLines

sRegTmp = oWS.Environment("Process")("Temp") & "\RegTmp.tmp "
sOutTmp = oWS.Environment("Process")("Temp") & "\sOutTmp" & _
          Hour(Now) & Minute(Now) & Second(Now) & ".tmp "

oWS.Run "regedit /e /a " & sRegTmp, , True '/a enables export as Ansi for WinXP

With oFSO.OpenTextFile(sOutTmp, 8, True)
  .WriteLine("REGEDIT4" & vbcrlf & "; " & WScript.ScriptName & " " & _

  With oFSO.GetFile(sRegTmp)
    aRegFileLines = Split(.OpenAsTextStream(1, 0).Read(.Size), vbcrlf)

      If sRegKey <> eRegLine Then
        .WriteLine(vbcrlf & sRegKey) & vbcrlf & eRegLine
      Else
        .WriteLine(vbcrlf & sRegKey)
      End If
      iCnt = iCnt + 1
    End If
  Next

  Erase aRegFileLines

  If iCnt < 1 Then
    oWS.Popup "Search completed in " & FormatNumber(Timer - StartTime, 0) & " seconds." & _
              vbcrlf & vbcrlf & "No instances of " & chr(34) & sSearchFor & chr(34) & _
              " found.",, WScript.ScriptName & " " & Chr(169) & " Bill James", 4096
    .Close
    oFSO.DeleteFile(sOutTmp)
    Cleanup()
  End If

End With

oWS.Popup "Search completed in " & FormatNumber(Timer - StartTime, 0) & " seconds." & _

          WScript.ScriptName & " " & Chr(169) & " Bill James", 4096

oWS.Run "WordPad " & sOutTmp, 3, True

oFSO.DeleteFile(sOutTmp)

Cleanup()

Sub Cleanup()
  Set oWS = Nothing
  Set oFSO = Nothing
  WScript.Quit
End Sub

Save the document to your desktop as regsearch.vbs and close Notepad. Locate the regsearch.vbs file on your desktop and double-click on it to run it. A dialog will open up. Enter MSVCK71.dll into the box for what string to search for and click the Ok button. It will take some time to run so be patient. When it is done a message box will open with how many items were found. Click the Ok button and Word (or Notepad will open with the information. Post that information back here and I will review it and we can go from there.

Cheers.

Hi blackfolder. ok, let's look at the event logs and see if we can see what this is referring to.

click Start>Run, type eventvwr.msc into the Open editbox and click the Ok button.

When the Event Viewer opens look under the Application Log section and the System Log section for any lines that have a red circle with a white 'x' in it. These are errors and there should be one in there for this system or program not starting up.

Double-click on the specific error line and copy down all of the information and post it back here.

Cheers.

Hi OT,

I have had a look and there are no error messages that make reference to that file or program.

Cheers

Hey blackfolder. Let's see who made that startup.exe folder.

Go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\Startup and right-click on the Startup.exe folder. Click on the Version tab and post the information back here regarding:
  • Company Name
  • Product Name
  • Product Version
If it is part of Giant then we can just delete it.

Cheers.

Hey blackfolder. Ok, just to be safe, create a new folder named Old at the root of the C: drive. Then, MOVE the file C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\Startup.exe to the new folder c:\Old.

After that, simply reboot. There should be no error messages now. Save the file for a week or so in the c:\Old folder to see if it effects anything else (I highly doubt that it will) and then I would just delete it.

Let me know if the problem with the error message goes away and if you have any other problems. If you do have any other problems, post a new HijackThis log and give me the details of the problems. Otherwise we have a couple of cleanup steps to perform and then you are done.

Cheers.
