Hi
When i startup my pc i get a black screen with the following white words:-

"We appologise for the inconvenience, but Windows didn't start successfully.
A Hardware or Software change might have caused this

If your pc stopped responding, restarted automatically or was automatically shut down to protect your files & folders, chose 'last known configuration' to revert to most recent settings that worked.

If a previous startup attempt was interupted, due to power failure or because the power or reset button was pressed, or if your not sure what caused the problem, chose 'Start Windows as Normal'.

SAFE MODE
SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING
LAST KNOWN CONFIGURATION PROMPT
START NORMALLY

Use up & down keys to highlight your choice.
Seconds to Windows start : 28 "

I did some google searches & it said it could be due to a virus or software issue!
It doesn't always happen & there's no set rule as to when Windows starts or doesn't start.

Can anyone please help as my pc at the moment is important to my studies!!

thanks

Hi

No, it happens mainly when the pc has been off a while.
The pc boots, i see the name (compaq) of my pc & hear the noise inside & it then goes to the Windows XP logo, then it reboots, i see the name of my pc again & then it goes to the page.

Sometimes i click on ''start Windows normally' & it just reboots back to the page or when sometimes it boots normally & Windows works.
Sometimes i let the counter count down from 30 to 0 & it boots normally.

Now, obviously, it has worked & i could reboot now & it would work, it tends to happen when pc been off a while as i say.

I googled the
"We appologise for the inconvenience, but Windows didn't start successfully.
A Hardware or Software change might have caused this"
& i saw this:-

I was wondering if it could be something on startup, preventing Windows starting properly. It starts ok in safe mode!

thanks

You may want to post in the Windows XP section of the forums. Or the appropriate section for your operating system.
