This may or may not be an issue. I started noticing that my browing sessions had started slowing down. We just moved in to our new home and had Comcast install their 16Mbs Hi speed internet service. It was great for about a week. Now I notice that in the Task Manager window, whenever I open a browser session via IE 8.0, it shows up that two iexplore.exe are running. It doubles for evey browser window that I open.

Here is what I've tried so far:
1. Cleared all Temp Internet Files and Cookies.
2. Ran %temp% and cleared all those files.
3. Ran AdAware Signature Series. Nothing was found.
4. Ran McAfee Virus Scan. Nothing found
5. Ran Registry Mechanic. Fixed the found problems.
6. Ran CCleaner. Fixed the found problems.
7. Ran CWShredder. Fixed the found problems.
8. Ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Fixed the found problems. Here's the log:

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

Hi driabnav,

Welcome to BC HijackThis forum and sorry for the delay. I am farbar. I am going to assist you with your problem.

Please refrain from making any changes to your system (updating Windows, installing applications, removing files, etc.) from now on as it might prolong handling your log and make the job for both of us more difficult.
  • You have still some leftovers from an incomplete uninstalled Norton Antivirus on your computer.

To remove the leftovers please download and run the Norton Removal Tool.

Note: Norton removal tool is one and the same for all versions named below. It doesn't matter which version you have.

Warning: The Norton Removal Tool uninstalls all Norton 2008/2007/2006/2005/2004/2003 products and Norton 360 from your computer. If you use ACT! or WinFAX, back up those databases before you proceed.

  • Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3

    * IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

    • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Information on A/V control HERE)
    • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
    • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
    • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

    Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

  • Please go to start -> Run.
    • Copy and paste the bold line in the run-box and click OK: "C:\Qoobox\Add-Remove Programs.txt"
    • A text file opens up, copy and paste the content to your reply.

farbar,

The logs for Combo Fix and Qoobow are below. Just a head's up that I am still getting the double iexplore.exe and the browsing sessions are still very slow.

Thanks,
Van

Well done :thumbup2:
  • Close any open browsers.

Open notepad (start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad) and copy/paste the text in the code box below into it:

    DDS::
    uInternet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = iexplore
    TB: {0B53EAC3-8D69-4B9E-9B19-A37C9A5676A7} - No File
    TB: {42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6} - No File
    TB: Internet Service: {144a6b24-0ebc-4d89-bf09-a06a718e57b5} -
    mRun: [<NO NAME>]
    Trusted Zone: intuit.com
    Trusted Zone: turbotax.com
    Registry::
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard]
    "ShellNext"="http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/"
    "Completed"=hex:01,00
    SkipFix::

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

    Posted Image

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you ( "C:\ComboFix.txt"). Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

  • Optional:Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This changed from what we know in 2006 read this article:

    http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

I suggest you uninstall the following program via Add or Remove Programs if your are using it:

    Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player.

If you uninstalled it also remove the folder in bold: C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

  • Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
    • Look for "Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE)" JRE 6 Update 14.
    • Click the Download button to the right.
    • Select your Platform: "Windows".
    • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
    • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
    • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
    • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
    • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
-- If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
-- If you choose to update via the Java applet in Control Panel, uncheck the option to install the Toolbar unless you want it.
-- The uninstaller incorporated in this release removes previous Updates 10 and above, but does not remove older versions, so they still need to be removed manually.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

  • Reboot the computer and see if you still get two iexplore.exe when you open IE.

Thanks farbar. Here's the second ComboFix Log. I removed the Viewpoint manager and Media Player as well as all the Java apps and installed the lated Java app. I still have two iexplore.exe and the browsing is still very slow.

  • ComboFix has listed My Way Search Assistant on your program list. This is considered as an adware program. Please go to Add/Remove Program and uninstall it.

  • Open your Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, first update it, run a "quick scan", let reboot if needed and copy/paste the log to your reply.

Note: The logs are saved by default under the Logs tab. If the log did not automatically open you can obtain the latest log from there.

  • Run Internet Explorer in "No Add-ons" Mode:
  • Close Internet Explorer if it is running.
  • Go to start > Run.
  • Copy/paste in the run box: iexplore.exe -extoff
  • Click OK or press Enter.
  • First see if there are still two instances of iexplore.exe running. Also see how Internet Explorer is running in that mode.
Note: When you close Internet Explorer and restart it, it will again function in normal mode with all Add-ons

I wanted to add some extra notes to the third step as we want to see the role of Add-ons in the issue:
When you open IE, you see a notification at the top of the page: "Internet Explorer in currently running without add-on".
If you go to your Favorites and open a link it will be still in "No Add-ons" Mode. You can go on browsing internet in that mode.
You can open a new page in "No Add-ons" Mode by going to start => run and pressing OK.
If you close IE, or click on IE icon to open a new page it will function in normal mode with all Add-ons.

farbar,

Good morning!

1. MyWay Search Assistant did not appear on my Add/Remove Proggrams list, nor could I find it using File Search.

2. The Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware log is posted below.

3. Running IE without addins. Still have the double occurence if iexplore.exe.

Thanks for your continued help on this. It is much appreciated.

Van

Good day driabnav,

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.36
Database version: 2090

  • Still the Malwarebytes database version is way behind the current update which is at this moment 2206. Please update it first, then run a quick scan. Post the log if it found anything, otherwise no need to post the log.

  • Download ProcessExplorer.zip and save it to your desktop.
  • Unzip the file.
  • Double-click procexp.exe to run it.
  • On the left pane under Process right-click the first iexplore.exe on the list and select Properties.
  • Under Image tab note down the entry in the Command line box.
  • Press the Bring to Front button and tell me if IE opens up or you get a notification that "No visible window found for this process".
  • Repeat the procedure for the second iexplore.exe on the list and post the findings.

Updated Malwarebytes database. No problems found.

Ran Process Explorer. Here's the results:

1st iexplore.exe on the list
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe"

Bring to front:
ie opened

2nd iexplore.exe on the list
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" SCODEF:236 CREDAT:79873

Bring to the front:
No visible window found for this process

Thanks for walking me throught this.
