Hi, fredg,

Which version of Ad-aware did you run? Here is the info in case you need the new version. If you already have it, and have run it with these configurations, skip down to the Spybot scan. You will need to do that.
Please run these scan::
Ad-aware *
Download Ad-aware version SE Personal 1.06 from here:
Download from:
http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html
Install by double-clicking on the downloaded file.
If you have a previous version of Ad-Aware installed, during the installation of the new version you will be prompted to uninstall or keep the older version - be sure to uninstall the previous version. After installing Ad-aware, you will be prompted to update the program and run a full scan. De-select all boxes so that it does not run. If you already have Ad-aware Second Edition skip to the next step.
Manually run "Ad-Aware SE Personal" and from the main screen Click on "Check for Updates Now".
Click the 'Connect'-button and, if there are new updates, click 'OK' and then 'Finish'.
Once the definitions have been updated:
Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan as per the following instructions:
-Launch the program, and click on the Gear at the top of the start screen.

-Under General Settings the following boxes should all be checked off: (Checked will be indicated by a green circle with a check mark in it, Un-Checked is a red circle with an X in it. If it is greyed out, those features are only available in the retail version.)

- Automatically save logfile"
- Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal"
- Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
- Prompt to update outdated confirmation) - Change to 7 days.
- Click the "Scanning" button (On the left side).
- Under Drives & Folders, select "Scan within Archives"
- Click "Click here to select Drives + folders" and select your installed hard drives.
- Under Memory & Registry, select all options.
- Click the "Advanced" button (On the left hand side).
- Under "Shell Integration", select "Move deleted files to Recycle Bin".
- Under "Log-file detail", select all options.
- Click on the "Defaults" button on the left.
- Type in the full url of what you want as your default homepage and searchpage e.g. http://www.google.com.
- Click the "Tweak" button (Again, on the left hand side).
- Expand "Scanning Engine" by clicking on the "+" (Plus) symbol) and select the following:
- "Unload recognized processes during scanning."
- "Obtain command line of scanned processes"
- "Scan registry for all users instead of current user only"
- Under "Cleaning Engine", select the following:
-"Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion."
-"During removal, unload explorer and IE if necessary"
-"Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot."
- "Delete quarantined objects after restoring"
- Click on "Safety Settings" and select "Write-protect system files after repair (Hosts file, etc)"
- Click on "Proceed" to save these Preferences.
- Click on the "Scan Now" button on the left.
- Under "Select Scan Mode, be sure to select "Use Custom Scanning Options".

- Close all programs except Ad-aware.
- Click on "Next" in the bottom right corner to start the scan.
- Run the Ad-Aware scan and allow it to remove everything it finds and then REBOOT - Even if not prompted to.
- After you log back in, Ad-Aware may run to finalize the scan and remove any locked files that it may of found. Allow it to finish.

Spybot S&D*
** Spybot has a new version 1.4 available.
** If you already have Spybot 1.3 update to version 1.4.
Before installing Spybot S&D 1.4 remove 1.3 like this:
Open 1.3 . Go to Immunize. Click on UNDO at the top. At the bottom, take the checkmark OUT of "BrowserHelper> "Enable permanent blocking..."
This will disable all protection. Make sure ALL has been disabled.
If you are using Spybotís TeaTimer disable all protection there as well.
If Opera Browser is installed, de-select protection for Opera Immunity
Then go to Add/Remove programs via Start>Settings>Control Panel and REMOVE Spybot.
Reboot
Go to your Program Files and delete the old Spybot folder.
Delete the old desktop icon.
Then you are ready to install the new version.

Download Spybot S&D 1.4 here:
http://safer-networking.org/en/news/2005-05-31.html
or
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html

Install by double-clicking on the downloaded file.
Run Spybot S&D from desktop icon or Start menu.
Press "Search for updates" button to get list of updates available.
Press "Download updates" button.
Close all IE windows and close & restart Spybot S&D.
Press "Check for problems" button.
Have SpyBot remove all it marks in RED by pressing "Fix selected problems".
Close Spybot S&D, reboot your system.

We cannot use HijackThis yet because it is running out of a temp folder. It needs to be located in a permanent folder of its own where it can save backups. Please move it to a folder:
Click My Computer, then C:\
In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis". Now you have C:\HJT\ folder. Put your HijackThis.exe there, and double click to run it.
Please post a fresh log so we can continue cleaning. Thanks.

Things are looking better! Good job! Posted Image

Now for the rest....

Please reboot your system into Safe Mode (By repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears).

Launch HJT and tick the following:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com

These items are [color=blue]optional[/b] to fix because they use resources at Boot, and are unnecessary. It is your choice to fix them, however, depending on your needs. Fixing them here will not prevent you from opening RealPlayer and QuickTime manually as needed.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] \"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe\" -osboot
( RealPlayer scheduler -- Unnecessary)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
(System Tray access to Apple's "Quick Time" viewer from version 5 onwards)

Close all windows and click "Fix Checked".

Delete the entire MyWebSearch folder IF it still exists here:
C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch <--folder

Reboot normally.

In Internet Explorer click Tools>Internet Options>General, click on Delete Files. Make sure you get all offline content as well. Also clean out your
%Userprofile%\Local Settings\Temp (User Profile: repeat for all users) **Do not delete the temp folder itself.

Reboot.
Please run HJT and post a new log. Thanks.

Here is my new log. Two entries did not show in safe mode. They were the R1 entries. I deleted them in regular mode. I hope that worked.

You did a good job!
Let's flush System Restore and create a clean Restore Point.
(Using XP, you must be logged in as Administrator to do this.)
Go to Start>Run and type msconfig Press enter.
When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings Link on the left.
Check the box labeled Turn Off System Restore.

Reboot. Go back in and turn System Restore ON. A new Restore Point will be created.

Here is my standard list of simple steps that you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future. You may have already taken some of these steps:
1. Visit Windows Update:
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.
Windows Update: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to 'prompt', and 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'disable'.

3. Download and install the following free programs:
a. SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
b. SpywareGuard: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html
Periodically check for updates.

4. Keep your antivirus software and firewall software up to date.
Note: Zone Alarm Firewall (Zone Labs) http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp is free.
Also Sygate has an optional free version: http://smb.sygate.com/download_buy.htm

5. You might consider installing Mozilla / Firefox.
http://www.mozilla.org/

6. I would check for updates in SpyBot once a week or so.
Check for updates in Adaware frequently.
I scan with each at least weekly.

7. The "a Squared" Trojan Scanner has a free version. It is an onboard trojan scanner that is installed much like Spybot/AdAware but handles trojans.
Download free from "a Squared" http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/ Install it.
Run and activate your free version with a Squared and then select
Scan your computer for malware infections .
Then select any/all drives.
Finally Scan selected folders.

8. Before using or purchasing any Spyware/Malware protection/removal program, always check the Rogue/Suspect Spyware List. It will save you a lot of grief, as well as money if you are thinking of purchasing. Here is the link: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm
If you want to know just how effective your anti-spyware program is, or how well any of the "rogue" programs listed at the above link work, check this for an independent comparison of several anti-spyware programs: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/asw-test-guide.htm

9. I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.
10. After you use Windows XP for some time, the prefetch folder can get full of rarely used or obsolete links which can slow down your computer boot time noticeably. We recommend you delete all files in this folder about once a month.
To find the prefetch folder, enter this in the explorer address bar:
%windir%\prefetch
This should take you to either C:\WINDOWS\PREFETCH or C:\WINNT\PREFETCH. Delete all the files there. http://www.hexff.com/xp_tuneup.php

Since this issue has been resolved, I will close this thread.
Happy and Safe Surfing! :flowers:
