My Dell 1504fp only stays on for a few seconds. If I switch it off and on, it goes back off in a few seconds.

Since you say you turn it off an back on again, I guess it's the screen image that goes off to a black screen, with the power still showing active? If this is the situation, it indicates a backlight fault, which is most commonly caused by an inverter fault, although a CCFL lamp could also cause the symptom.
