norton cannot repair or access wininet.dll file

This computer was infected with Smitfraud and I used the tutorial on this website to remove it. It seems to have corrected the concern for the most part. Now my Norton 2005 antivirus program continues to give me a message that I am infected with W32.Desktophijack in C:WINDOWS\System32\WININET.dll. Can you please help with some information to repair, Norton cannot repair because it cannot access the file. Thanks in advance.

Hello jmoo19 and welcome to the BC forums. Let's do this.

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Now open Windows Explorer and navigate to the c:\windows\system32\dllcache\ folder and see if there is a wininet.dll file in that folder. If so, then go to the c:\windows\system32\ folder and rename the wininet.dll file to wininet.old. Once you are done with that, reboot the computer.

The wininet.dll file should be automatically replaced with the good copy. You can then either run a scan and have Norton remove the wininet.old file or manually delete it yourself.

If there is no wininet.dll in the dllcache folder then post back here and we will need to install a new copy from your XP cd.

You are exactly right, I had to reboot into safe mode to rename the wininet.dll file to .old and I did have to install a new wininet.dll from the service pack into the dllcache but this allowed me to clean out the file. After this was done I had to reinstall a wininet.dll into the C:\windows\system32\ folder for IE to work correctly but this repair has this computer working like a charm.

I cannot at this moment but soon I will donate to this site.
You folks are the greatest!
