Hello,
I am hoping that someone can analyze this log and tell me what to fix. I am running an HP dv9810us entertainment laptop with Windows Vista SP1-32 bit OS. I just ran the Hijackthis program and wanted expert advice rather than causing further issues and errors. Thank you for your time!

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer.

My name is km2357 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.

If for any reason you do not understand an instruction or are just unsure then please do not guess, simply post back with your questions/concerns and we will go through it again.

Please do not start another thread or topic, I will assist you at this thread until we solve your problems.

Lastly the fix may take several attempts and my replies may take some time but I will stick with it if you do the same.

Sorry for the delay in replying, the forum is very busy. If you still need help, please post a fresh HiJackThis Log

What specific problems are you experiencing with the computer?

Do you recognize the following IP Addresses?

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{50308341-B85E-433F-8953-AFA3FE6C6FA9}: NameServer = 10.10.20.12,10.10.20.13

Step # 1: Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. Answers to my two questions.
2. Uninstall List
3. A fresh HiJackThis Log

Hi,

1. Computer is very slow. Web browsing is extremely slow. I had IE7 that always got stuck or loaded slow. I downloaded Google Chrome, which worked very well for a while. Then it became hung up constantly, and now stopped responding during every use. I uninstalled the program. The computer would have unexpected shutdowns that did not have solutions at least once per day. Random programs will not open or freeze up.
2. I do not recognize either IP address listed.

Any IP Adresses that begin with 10.10 are reserved for private networks.

Is this computer part of a business/private network or is it a home computer?

Ok, thanks for letting me know. :thumbup2:

Step # 1: Disable Teatimer

Spybot S&D's tea timer normally provides real-time protection from spyware, however it may interfere with what we need to do. We will disable it until the machine is clean when it can be re-enabled.

This is a two step process.
First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the version 1.5 or 1.6, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident

Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Step # 1: Download and Run ComboFix

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

*Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include C:\ComboFix.txt and a fresh HiJackThis Log in your next reply.

Use multiple posts if you can't fit everything into one post.

Hi,

I have completed the 2 steps. I noticed that the log shows I had Windows Defender still running, I didn't know it was running. Let me know if I should run combofix again with it turned off.

Both your HiJackThis and Uninstall list logs show that you have Avira installed. But ComboFix doesn't show Avira, did you remove/uninstall Avira before running ComboFix?

Also, do you recognize these files:

2009-05-17 21:21 . 2009-03-08 11:33 109568 ----a-w c:\windows\system32\PDMSetup.exe
2009-05-17 21:21 . 2009-03-08 11:33 132608 ----a-w c:\windows\system32\ieUnatt.exe
2009-05-17 21:21 . 2009-03-08 11:33 107520 ----a-w c:\windows\system32\RegisterIEPKEYs.exe
2009-05-17 21:21 . 2009-03-08 11:33 107008 ----a-w c:\windows\system32\SetIEInstalledDate.exe
2009-05-17 21:21 . 2009-03-08 11:33 103936 ----a-w c:\windows\system32\SetDepNx.exe

They were all accessed on the same day and time, May 17th. Do you remember what you did/downloaded that day?

I disabled Avira and Spybot per the instructions given. I installed an update to Adobe Reader on 5/17/09 but cannot recall any specific downloads on that date. I know that I have tried to download IE 8 in hopes of fixing my issues but I can't find it or remember the exact date. I have probably downloaded lots of stupid things over the past few months trying to fix this computer :thumbup2:

Let's take a closer look at a few of those files:

Step # 1 Upload Files

Go to Jotti
Copy the following line into the white textbox:
c:\windows\system32\PDMSetup.exe
Click Submit.
Please post the results of this scan to this thread.

Repeat the above steps with the following files:

c:\windows\system32\RegisterIEPKEYs.exe

c:\windows\system32\SetDepNx.exe

If Jotti is busy, Go to VirusTotal and scan the file(s) there.

Post the Jotti/Virustotal results from those three files in your next post/reply.

Those files come back clean, let's continue. :thumbup2:

Step # 1 Remove old versions of Java

Older Java versions have vulnerabilities and need to be removed.
  • Go to start > control panel > programs and features.
  • Right click on each instance of (if found):

    Java tm 6 Update 2

    Java tm 6 Update 7

  • Click Uninstall & then follow the prompts to remove it.

Reboot your Computer.

Step # 2: Download and Run ATF Cleaner

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.

Right-Click on ATF Cleaner.exe and choose Run as Administrator to open it.

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Temporary Internet Files
Java Cache

*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Step # 3 Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
  • Before running a scan, click the Update tab, next click Check for Updates to download any updates, if available.
  • Next click the Scanner tab and select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
  • You can also access the log by doing the following:
  • Click on the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware icon to launch the program.
  • Click on the Logs tab.
  • Click on the log at the bottom of those listed to highlight it.
  • Click Open.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. MalwareBytes' Log
2. A fresh HiJackThis Log
