Hey guys. Third times' the charm! Anyway, I'm working on a friend's PC. Initially he couldn't even get anything to show on the desktop. I got the desktop back but noted that he had an out-of-date Internet Security Suite installed and NO Firewall so I began to install these tools along with AVG Free. After the first run of AVG, the Resident Shield began reporting that every Icon on his desktop had been infected with Win32/Virut. I then installed CCleaner, Malwarebytes and AdAware and performed a few scans in Safe Mode as an Administrator........all for nothing. Upon boot-up, the system is very sluggish and I cannot open Internet Explorer using the Desktop Icon or the Start Menu selection. Each and every time I open a window, the AVG Resident shiled reports a new infection and every game that shipped with Win XP (pinball, solitaire, etc.,) as well as Notepad are all being reported as infected with Win32/Virut. I also cannot turn the Windows Firewall on as the selections are greyed-out and non-selectable. When I attempt to activate it through the Applet in Control Panel, I'm told that the Administrator has instituted Group Policy that won't allow me to do that even though I'm logged-in as an Administrator. I finally got HiJackThis installed and here's the log:

I'd also add that I haven't updated to SP3 yet since I was having such a difficult time with the slowness/Alerts and I'd like to take care of this prior to updating the Operating System. Any assistance in getting this PC back in good shape is much appreciated.

Hi Dafunkdoc,

Welcome to BC HijackThis forum. I am farbar.

I'm afraid I've got bad news.

Your system is infected with one of the nastiest file infectors:

Virut is a polymorphic file infector with some additional features. It spreads all around the drive and infects even files infected by another virus previously. The only symptoms are a strange HDD activity while infecting, and also unwanted TCP traffic. Virut tries to connect you into an IRC network under the user name "Virtu" and zombify you. Unfortunately, the cleaning of this virus is very difficult or almost impossible.

http://www.ca.com/us/securityadvisor/virus...s.aspx?id=55141

The virus remains resident in memory and infects executable files with ".EXE" and ".SCR" file extensions.

It's damage to the system is almost beyond repair as it disables Windows File Protection:

The virus disables Windows File Protection by injecting code into the "winlogon.exe" process that patches system code in memory.

http://www.ca.com/us/securityadvisor/virus...s.aspx?id=55141

Therefore all those running processes are most probably now the virus agent.

There is a claim by Grisoft that the following tool can remove the infection:

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/Win...t-Remover.shtml

This claim is hard to believe. Not only almost all the running processes are infected but also their copy in i386 folder and in the dll cache are patched.

Therefore the only fast and safe answer to the virus is reformatting and reinstalling windows. You may backup non-executable (data) files and reformat the entire hard drive.

That was discouraging, but I tried the link to the fix you posted anyway and the results were pretty interesting. The tool cleaned about 150 instances of the virus after I ran it in Safe Mode. I couldn't run it initially in regular mode as I was greeted with a message that there were processes running which prevented it. So, I rebooted, got in Safe Mode, the tool completed scanning not only the C:, but also the Restore Partition. The whole operation took about 3 hours so I went to sleep. Waking up the next morning, I rebooted again only to find that Internet Explorer didn't work by clicking on the Desktop Icon nor on the Start Menu selection. I also couldn't Right-Click the desktop to change the resolution. I had a lot of damaged/corrupted system files and figured I could do a Repair Install of Windows XP. Unfortunately, that didn't work since I wasn't presented with a 'Repair this Windows Installation' menu choice after the prompts, instead, I was prompted to 'Delete this Partition and do a Clean Install'. Instead, I booted into Windows and just installed Windows XP right over the existing installation to repair the damaged/corrupted files. I realize I could also have run sfc /scannow. Anyway, it worked. The system is now running a lot better and I had to edit the registry in order to get the XP Firewall activated along with re-installing AVG free. Here is an updated HiJackThis log:

I have run a full Virus scan and haven't found anything but I figured I'd better be safe than sorry. If there is anything else I can do to further clean this sytem, please let me know.

I'm sorry to disappoint you. The only safe and sweet solution is a reformat. Your friend's computer will never be safe and fully functional unless you reformat the entire drive with all partitions. I see not only many infected entries but I don't trust those legit exe files any more. So be advised and do the right thing for your friend.

Nice job. This is a very good looking log. I bet your friend enjoys it.:thumbup2:

A firewall makes it even better:

There are several good free programs available like:
Sunbelt-Kerio
Comodo Firewall Pro
Online Armor Free edition

Note: If you decide to install Comodo, while installing uncheck the option related to Ask Toolbar.

Do you have any question before closing the topic?

Thanks for all your help and advice and I hope I never have to come here again.....:thumbup2:

There is one question: Could you point me in the direction of some more sites that would educate me more on the ins-n'-outs of PC Security? Seems that I've become the resident 'Computer Geek' in my neck of the woods and I'm always looking to become more educated on the subject.

There are so many, if I name one and not the other it will not be fair to the volunteers. So I leave this one to you to Google.

You are very welcome and I also hope you never need us again.
