freezing computer

my computer will freeze usually after sitting idle and sometimes when using it.what could the problem be?

To start I would open the case and see if it needs to be cleaned out. We have a tutorial posted here

thinking memory may have been the problem i upgraded from 512mb to 1 gig of memory and did a complete clean in the housing and fan area during that time.

Hmm have you scanned for viruses lately. There does not seem to be anything out of the ordinary from what I can tell in the task manager. Have you ever removed the Heat sink and fan from the processor without applying new thermal paste? Did the problem seem to start before or after you added the memory?

it started before i installed the memory.i was told that 512 memory was the minimum for xp.

Try removing the old module and see if it freezes up.

yea,but it was freezing before i installed the memory,that why i installed it.

FYI...i downloaded a patch to remove windows sp3 tcp/ip connections limits and so far so good.it was set @10. they recommend setting it @500-600

ok, i have been watching the event viewer and recording the actual time my computer freezes and every time it freezes there is an error message redbook 10. for example this morning my computer froze @7:41 am and in the event viewer @7:41 the error message was redbook 10. when i click on properties it says this device has not been shown to support digital audio playback....could this be my problem....thanks in advance.

update,i was just now watching a video and it froze.when it froze it started making a wierd constant noise through the speakers...thought this might help...thanks
