Hi, my laptop dvd drive recently died to so I got an external one instead. However my hard drive has just broke after an installation of Vista saying BOOTMGR is missing. I read it can be fixed by using the repair function on the vista dvd, but I can't get my laptop to boot from external dvd drive. Does anyone know how I could do this?

Thanks

Does your BIOS have the option to boot to USB?
Make it the first boot device

Does the external drive reflect in the BIOS?

If so, is it set to be the first boot device?

Thanks for replying. I set the first boot priority to external boot priority and turned on the feature to allow booting from USB devices but still when I press f12 the USB device is not listed. I also tried it with my USB pen and still it didn't appear.

its very strange but Ive sussed how to make it boot from usb pens, I have to plug them in really fast and it works somehow. The only I have is that I dont know what software to put on them that could help me fix the bootmgr situation

Remove the internal DVD drive from your laptop then boot from the external dvd, it worked with me..
