Honestly, sometimes I wonder if we're really better off with computers. Something is always wrong.

The other day I did a Windows upgrade - including IE from 6 to 8. What a mess. I would do just about anything to get back my IE 6.

Does anyone have any suggestions to either get my Director to work or to revert to IE6?

Gone...what does that mean?

What does Device Manager reflect?

Your Scanjet files have disappeared?

Did you try running chkdsk /r?

Your assumptions may be correct...but I don't see any further Google assumptions that the two are related.

There is nothing wrong in Device Manager - no warnings of any kind and the item is listed in My Computer and, of course, Control Panel.

Here's something else, if the computer has been idling for some time, I can't get IE to start at all. I have to reboot.

My feeling is IE8 is just too powerful or eats up too much memory or is just not compatible with this machine. Since buying a new computer just so IE8 can work is not on the radar, is their any way to revert to IE6 when it worked fine? Please help if you can.

BTW, I will run chkdsk /r when I next reboot which will be in a few minutes.

Usually when one uninstalls 8, IE reverts to back to the previous version

Hi,

I agree with Stang777, try uninstalling IE8. If your printer works then IE 8 is the problem but if the issue is still the same then try to go to control panel and try to do a print test

OK, just to be clear, it's my scanner that isn't working.

I uninstalled IE8 from Add/Remove and am back at IE6. So I decided to uninstall scanjet 4070 from Add/Remove also and do a clean install. I rebooted, slipped in the installation CD and now I get the following error:

"application cannot start as it cannot create needed files. There may not be enough disk space"

Well, I have 32G free space so that's not it. Any ideas?

Yes, thank you. HP, to my surprise, was extremely helpful. It's all fixed now.

Oh happy day!!!

There was a patch that had to be downloaded and installed first. Once that was done, the installation disk jumped into action. The install went without a hitch.

The patch was col9464en.exe
