I ran into a nasty problem today, and I can't seem to fix it. I deleted one file earlier today, and that removed some shortcuts from my desktop, but my dialup still wants to dial a foreign number. I have run various antivirus programs (including AVG and Panda) as well as Spybot and CWS Shredder. Nothing can recognize or nab this thing. Please help! Below is a copy of my HJT log. Many, many thanks for your time!

Hi, nynaults,

You will be working in Safemode and will not have internet access, so please print these instructions.
We can take care of your dialer if you will please move HijackThis into its own folder where it can save backups.
Rightclick on an empty space on your desktop and choose New > Folder
Name it HijackThis (HJT, or whatever)
Rightclick HijackThis.exe, choose Cut.
Doubleclick (to open) the folder you created.
Rightclick inside and choose Paste.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot your system in Safe Mode (By repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears).

Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following IF it is listed, and click "Kill process" for: USBN.EXE

Scan with HJT and check the following entries:
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: BrowserHelper Class - {EBCDDA60-2A68-11D3-8A43-0060083CFB9C} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\NZDD.DLL
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {014DA6C9-189F-421a-88CD-07CFE51CFF10} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [usbn] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\usbn.exe -go -c7 -w10
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://207.188.7.150/09067e1f1890a8ab4d23/...ip/RdxIE601.cab
O16 - DPF: {24311111-1111-1121-1111-111191113457} - file://c:\eied_s7.cab
O16 - DPF: {33331111-1111-1111-1111-611111193457} - file://c:\ex.cab
O16 - DPF: {33331111-1111-1111-1111-611111193458} - file://c:\ex.cab

Then close all windows and click "Fix Checked".

Delete the specified files:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\NZDD.DLL <--file
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\usbn.exe <--file

Reboot normally.

Go back and rehide Protected System Files;
Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin".

Please run these scans:

Ad-aware *
Download Ad-aware version SE Personal 1.06 from here:
Download from:
http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html
Install by double-clicking on the downloaded file.
If you have a previous version of Ad-Aware installed, during the installation of the new version you will be prompted to uninstall or keep the older version - be sure to uninstall the previous version. After installing Ad-aware, you will be prompted to update the program and run a full scan. De-select all boxes so that it does not run. If you already have Ad-aware Second Edition skip to the next step.
Manually run "Ad-Aware SE Personal" and from the main screen Click on "Check for Updates Now".
Click the 'Connect'-button and, if there are new updates, click 'OK' and then 'Finish'.
Once the definitions have been updated:
Do NOT scan with the program yet.
Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by immediately tapping the F8 key (or F5 on some computers)
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the Enter key.
Once in Safe Mode, launch Ad-Aware, and press Start > Next to let it scan your drives...
It will find a number of "bad" files and registry keys. Press 'Next'
Right-click in that results pane and choose "select all"
Press "Next" again
It will ask you whether you'd like to remove all checked items. Click OK.
Finally, close Ad-Aware, and start your computer normally.

Spybot S&D*
I'm not sure which version you ran. I am including all info here in case you need the new version. If you already have it, make sure it is updated and skip down to the instructions for scanning.
** Spybot has a new version 1.4 available.
** If you already have Spybot 1.3 update to version 1.4.
Before installing Spybot S&D 1.4 remove 1.3 like this:
Open 1.3 . Go to Immunize. Click on UNDO at the top. At the bottom, take the checkmark OUT of "BrowserHelper> "Enable permanent blocking..."
This will disable all protection. Make sure ALL has been disabled.
If you are using Spybot's TeaTimer disable all protection there as well.
If Opera Browser is installed, de-select protection for Opera Immunity
Then go to Add/Remove programs via Start>Settings>Control Panel and REMOVE Spybot.
Reboot
Go to your Program Files and delete the old Spybot folder.
Delete the old desktop icon.
Then you are ready to install the new version.

Download Spybot S&D 1.4 here:
http://safer-networking.org/en/news/2005-05-31.html
or
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html

Install by double-clicking on the downloaded file.
Run Spybot S&D from desktop icon or Start menu.
Press "Search for updates" button to get list of updates available.
Press "Download updates" button.
Close all IE windows and close & restart Spybot S&D.
Press "Check for problems" button.
Have SpyBot remove all it marks in RED by pressing "Fix selected problems".
Close Spybot S&D, reboot your system.

Housecall: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
Let it remove what it finds. Make sure your IE security is NOT blocking the ActiveX download . (It takes a long time for the Active-X to download prior to the scan... be patient as you may think nothing is happening. The download is especially slow if you are on dial-up.)

Please post a fresh log. Thanks.

You're welcome. You did a great job!

Now that we have that dialer out of the way, you might consider another HJT scan in normal mode to fix these optional items. They use resources and are unnecessary to be running at Startup.
Fixing them here will not prevent you from opening them manually if needed.
Your choice to fix, depending on your needs:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LoadQM] loadqm.exe
(This is the Microsoft MSN Queue Manager. There is disagreement over whether it is spying on you or not. Nevertheless, I suggest you check this entry and remove it.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] \"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe\" -osboot
(RealPlayer scheduler. Unnnecessary.)

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Update Detection] ?\WkDetect.exe
(Checks for updates to MS Works. Unnecessary.)

O4 - Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE
( Microsoft Office startup assistant. Unnecessary.)

Close all windows and click "Fix Checked".

Reboot.

If everything is running well, it would be a good idea to flush System Restore so you have a clean Restore Point:

1. Right click the My Computer icon on the Desktop.
2. Click on the Performance Tab.
3. Click on the File System button.
4. Click on the Troubleshooting Tab.
5. Put a check mark next to "Disable System Restore".
6. Click the Apply button.
7. Click the Close button.
8. Click the Close button again.
9. You will be prompted to restart the computer. Click Yes.
NOTE: The Restore Utility will now be disabled.
After rebooting, follow steps 1-5, remove the check mark next to "Disable System Restore".
That will create a new restore point.
Then reboot.

That should do it. Feel free to post a log for final review; otherwise you are good to go.

Here is my standard list of simple steps that you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future. You have already taken some of these steps:
1. Visit Windows Update:
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.
Windows Update: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to 'prompt', and 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'disable'.

3. Download and install the following free programs:
a. SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
b. SpywareGuard: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html
Periodically check for updates.

4. Keep your antivirus software and firewall software up to date.
Note: Zone Alarm Firewall (Zone Labs) http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp is free.
Also Sygate has an optional free version: http://smb.sygate.com/download_buy.htm

5. You might consider installing Mozilla / Firefox.
http://www.mozilla.org/

6. Install spyware detection and removal programs:
You may also want to consider installing either or both of AdAware (free version) and Spybot S&D (freeware). Use these programs to regularly scan your system for and remove many forms of spyware/malware.
a. AdAware: http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/

b. SpyBot S&D: http://safer-networking.org/en/news/2005-05-31.html
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html
http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download
** If you already have Spybot 1.3 update to version 1.4.
Before installing Spybot S&D 1.4 remove 1.3 like this:
Open 1.3 . Go to Immunize. Click on UNDO at the top. At the bottom, take the checkmark OUT of "BrowserHelper> "Enable permanent blocking..."
This will disable all protection. Make sure ALL has been disabled.
If you are using Spybot's TeaTimer disable all protection there as well.
If Opera Browser is installed, de-select protection for Opera Immunity
Then go to Add/Remove programs via Start>Settings>Control Panel and REMOVE the old 1.3 Spybot.
Reboot
Go to your Program Files and delete the old Spybot folder.
Delete the old desktop icon.
Then you are ready to install the new version.

I would check for updates in SpyBot once a week or so.
Check for updates in Adaware frequently.
I scan with each at least weekly.

7. The "a Squared" Trojan Scanner has a free version. It is an onboard trojan scanner that is installed much like Spybot/AdAware but handles trojans.
Download free from "a Squared" http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/ Install it.
Run and activate your free version with a Squared and then select
Scan your computer for malware infections .
Then select any/all drives.
Finally Scan selected folders.

8. Before using or purchasing any Spyware/Malware protection/removal program, always check the Rogue/Suspect Spyware List. It will save you a lot of grief, as well as money if you are thinking of purchasing. Here is the link: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm
If you want to know just how effective your anti-spyware program is, or how well any of the "rogue" programs listed at the above link work, check this for an independent comparison of several anti-spyware programs: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/asw-test-guide.htm

9. I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

10. You might want to take a look at this article, too.
http://computercops.biz/postlite7736-.html

This issue seems to be resolved, so I will close this topic. I am glad we could help. :flowers:
