OS: XP SP3.
PC: ASUS P5BMX WiFi Mobo. 2Gb memory. Nvidia GF8400 Graphics
USER: Running an ageing 43 year old system with no major modifications. Cooling system efficiency increasing due to a diminishing insulation layer on head. Built my first computer (256 bytes of blistering memory with a calculator style screen) aged 16, built loads since then but only Windows makes me scream in frustration.
Whenever I try to run any virus/malware/spyware scanne my computer freezes after a few (variable) minutes.
It does this on: Windows Defender, AVG, Avast, SuperAntiSpyware.
Each program freezes consistently at the same place but it is a different place for each program. There are no errors and it does not impact anything outside the software.
1 booted into Safe Mode and run the programs that can run in safe mode and nothing was found.
2 run ComboFix and found nothing
3 Run a scan overnight in the hope that it was just running slow but it was still frozen.
4 Ploughed through the web and found a lot of posts about scanners freezing and tried various workarounds but these appeared to the software specific - none worked; I am assuming that I have a common problem.
5 Uninstalled and reinstalled the software but it still freezes during the scan.
Is there a common 'scanning' service in XP that could be the source?
I have now reached the 'kick the PC reapeatedly while using my entire stock of swear words" stage.
Any and all help greatly appreciated.
