Hello,

Thank you very much for any help in removing this idiotic virus from my comp. I am having a lot of problems because of a stupid Vundo virus on my computer. My comp may also have a BHO Trojan, but I'm not certain.

I've scanned my computer so many times with Spybot, Search and Destroy, MalwareBytes, Ad-Aware, AVG 8.5, CCleaner, McAfee, etc.. Those programs got rid of most of the virus. Everytime I've scanned since, they all come back negative for any viruses/spyware, yet I'm still having issues with some programs.

These are the programs that are still acting weird because of Vundo/BHO:

1) Internet Explorer 8 -- It does work, but I can't access Hotmail at all. Also, javascript isn't working. I've uninstalled and re-installed Java to no avail. Also, on the MSN.com front page, the Hotmail box on the left keeps telling me to "enable javascript," but it is.
(Note: Hotmail still works on Firefox -- just not IE8.)

2) AOL Instant Messenger: Opens for one second, then closes. I've uninstalled AIM, re-installed it -- nothing works. Can't use program at all.

3) Windows Media Player: Won't open at all.

4) Windows Vista Sidebar: Doesn't work right; none of the gadgets show up.

5) Windows Defender: Won't open up at startup. Whenever I start Windows, this message will always pop up about Windows Defender:

"Application failed to initialize: 0x800106ba. A problem caused this program's service to stop. To start the service, restart your computer or search Help and Support for how to start a service manually."

6) Yahoo Instant Messenger: It does work. But when I click on someone to chat with and type something into the chat box, I can't view any text at all. If they IM me, I can't see the text they write.

Please help me. I don't want to reformat my hard drive, but I'm not sure what else to do.

Also, I'm currently using an Acer Aspire 5100 with Windows Vista 32-bit. I'm able to use Vista fine in Normal Mode -- I don't have to use Safe Mode.

-Nick

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results, click no to the Optional_Scan
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet. You can find information on A/V control HERE

Hello,

Everything I've mentioned before still applies to my computer. There is one update though. A few days ago, I got a "Windows Update" notification in the Taskbar. Stupidly, I accepted the update. After I restarted my computer, I couldn't even open Windows. It kept saying there was a registry error. I couldn't even open Windows in Safe Mode. Thank God though, I had a Vista install disc. I ran it and clicked on "repair." It fixed that issue. I can run Windows again, but everything I've written before (e.g. AIM not working, Windows Defender, Hotmail, etc.) still applies. This Vundo virus is really irritating.

I attached the new "Attach.txt" DDS log to this reply. Here is my new DDS log:

Hello Nick K. and thank you for your patience,

Before I begin, I'd like you to run another tool.

Posted Image
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
  • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO.

    Posted Image
Click the image to enlarge it

  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Thank you Nick K.

This will require more than one round to properly eradicate. Please stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms seemingly abate.

Read through this entire procedure and if you have any questions, please ask them before you begin. Then either print out, or copy this page to Notepad and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out portions of these instructions.

***************************************************

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. If you are unsure how to do this, please see this link http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/114351/how-to-temporarily-disable-your-anti-virus-firewall-and-anti-malware-programs/

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt for further review.

Ried,

I tried running Combofix like you said, but it won't work. It either gets to the "Combofix is preparing to run" stage or the "Attempting to create a system restore point" stage and just stays there and never moves on. I've tried the running the program several times (even restarting my computer and trying again) to no avail.

What should I do?

P.S. Also, one time I tried the program, it told me there was an update available, so I pressed yes to accept. Just thought you should know.

Did you fully disable McAfee before trying to run ComboFix?

Try running it from Safe Mode.

Hi Nick_K.

Read through this entire procedure and if you have any questions, please ask them before you begin. Then either print out, or copy this page to Notepad and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out portions of these instructions.

It's IMPORTANT to carry out the instructions in the sequence listed below.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text inside the code box below into it:

Save this as "CFScript.txt", and as Type: All Files (*.*)
in the same location as ComboFix.exe

***************************************************

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt

--------------------------------------------------------------------

It's important to run this online scan to search for any remnants. It can take some time, so please be patient and allow it to run it's full course:

Using Internet Explorer or Firefox, visit http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/d...kavwebscan.html

**Vista users - right click the IE icon and run as Administrator

1. Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.

2. To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
3. Click Run at the Security prompt. The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database. Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.

  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply

Please include the following in your next reply:

Ried,

I tried several times in regular and safe modes to run Combofix by moving CFScript.txt over the Combofix icon, but Combofix keeps getting stuck at the "Attempting to create a system restore point" part...It worked before (and fixed many of the problems I was having), but it won't work this time...what should I do?

I uninstalled McAfee a few weeks ago, so there's no virus programs or Malware programs that are getting in the way...

You may have uninstalled it, but there are still pieces around

---- Devices - GMER 1.0.15 ----

AttachedDevice \Driver\tdx \Device\Tcp Mpfp.sys (McAfee Personal Firewall Plus Driver/McAfee, Inc.)
AttachedDevice \Driver\tdx \Device\Udp Mpfp.sys (McAfee Personal Firewall Plus Driver/McAfee, Inc.)
AttachedDevice \Driver\tdx \Device\RawIp Mpfp.sys (McAfee Personal Firewall Plus Driver/McAfee, Inc.)
AttachedDevice \FileSystem\fastfat \Fat fltmgr.sys (Microsoft Filesystem Filter Manager/Microsoft Corporation)

Download the McAfee Removal Tool.

Double click on MCPR.exe to launch it, then Click Run. A window should appear and disappear, this is normal. A new window should popup and begin the uninstall. When prompted to reboot your computer type Y.

Try again to run the CFScript.

Ried,

I ran the McAfee program you posted and got rid of the remnants. But Combofix still gets stuck at "Attempting to create a system restore point" both in Normal Mode and in Safe Mode.

You had difficulty the first time you ran Combofix, but you said you eventually got it to work. What did you do to get it to work that time?

Ried,

The last time I got Combofix to work, I was running Windows Vista in Normal Mode. I opened up Task Manager and closed all unnecessary programs such as "GoogleUpdate.exe" and "iTunesHelper.exe." I've tried doing that again, but it won't work this time. No matter what I do, it gets stuck at "Attempting to create a new system restore point."
