Internet Explorer, Netscape is shut down with no reason

Hi,
I have problem with web browser software/internet connection. The problem starts from....
1. Last few weeks, I installed Zone Alarm (Free).
2. Until last week, I use this laptop to connect internet. There is some warning message about internet explorer. I couldn't remember, but I remembered that I click "Allow".
3. Since then, whenever I use internet explorer to surf net. It shuts down after a few seconds with no reason. When I'm offline, I cannot open internet explorer (but I can normally use window explorer).
4. I guess it is zone alarm, so I uninstall it.
5. Problem exists, so I use sfc /scannow to check file.
6. Problem exists, so I uninstall/reinstall Internet Explorer.
7. Problem exists. I think ...ok. I'll use some other web browser such as Opera, Netscape.
8. Opera has no problem, I can surf net again. However, thing doesn't work with Netscape too. When I use netscape surfing net for a while, it shuts down.
9. MSN messenger cannot start too.
10. Now I use window explorer to surf internet and post this question, including Hijackthis log file.

pleaseeeee someone help me, I guess there must be some task running and detecting my browers. or please reply me back to e-mail address removed I'll be very very appreciated.

Hello taangtawan and welcome to the BC forums. After reviewing your log I see a few items that require our attention. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download CCleaner and install it but do not run it yet.

Step #2

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #3

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
O4 - Global Startup: Windows Explorer.lnk = C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #4

Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Step #5

Reboot normally and run at least 2 of the following on-line virus scans:Trend Micro Housecall
BitDefender On-Line Virus Scan
Panda ActiveScan
eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner
Make sure that you choose "fix", "clean" or "autoclean". If you have any files that cannot be disinfected or quarantined automatically then delete them manually.

Step #6

AdAware SE v1.06

Download, install, update, configure and run a scan with Ad-aware SE v1.06:
  • Download and Install AdAware SE Personal, keeping the default options. However, some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan.
  • Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE.
  • Click on the‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.
  • Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window:
    • In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected in green:
      • Under Safety:
        • Automatically save log-file
      • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
      • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
    • Under Definitions:
      • Prompt to update outdated definitions - set the number of days
  • Click on the ‘Scanning’ button on the left and select in green:
    • Under Driver, Folders & Files:
      • Scan Within Archives
    • Under Select drives & folders to scan:
      • choose all hard drives
    • Under Memory & Registry: all green
      • Scan Active Processes
      • Scan Registry
      • Deep Scan Registry
      • Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
      • Scan my Hosts file
  • Click on the ‘Advanced’ button on the left and select in green:
    • Under Shell Integration:
      • Move deleted files to recycle bin
    • Under Logfile Detail Level: all green
      • include addtional object information
      • DESELECT - include negligible objects information
      • include environment information
    • Under Alternate Data Streams:
      • Don't log streams smaller than 0 bytes
      • Don't log ADS with the following names: CA_INOCULATEIT
  • Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select in green:
    • Under ‘Scanning Engine’:
      • Unload recognized processes during scanning
      • Scan registry for all users instead of current user only
    • Under ‘Cleaning Engine’:
      • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
    • Under Log Files:
      • Include basic Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
      • Include additional Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
      • Please do not check: Include Module list in logfile
  • Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.
  • Click ‘Start’
  • Choose 'Perform Full System Scan'
  • DESELECT "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
  • Click ‘Next’ and Ad-Aware SE will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected and clean automatically.
  • If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries, you will receive a list of what it found in the window
  • Right-click on the list and choose Select All
  • Click the Next button to finish removing the items that were found
  • When finished, REBOOT to complete the removal of what Ad-Aware SE found
Step #7

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Hi OT,
I'm really appreciated your help, your dedicated description.
According to your steps,
Step1) Done, successfully,
Step2) Done, I loging as Admin account.
Step3) Done, I closed all application, fix checked only 4 items.
Step4) CCleaner deletes lots of temp files. Done.
Step5) I reboot, dialup to internet, use windows-explorer as a webbrowser.
I scan by using 3 items.
5.1) Trend Micro Housecall. Done, easily.
5.2) BitDefender On-Line Virus Scan. It loaded virus signature. I scanned 2 times. Each time took more than 40 mins to finish.
5.3) eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner. It loaded virus signature. I scanned 2 times.
Note that 5.2) and 5.3) Window-explore (as my current web browser) urged me about ActiveX Control. I needed to allow "Install ActiveX" to continue
the virus scanning process. Otherwise, the online engine doesn't scan my computer.
Step6) Done. Scanned 2 times. It found 59 cricital.
8 items are cookies in IECache entry.
51 items are in RegValue, Regkey. All of them is about game issue. I installed lots of GameHouse.com game.
I have removed all 59 items. I have quarantine log file. Let me know if you wanna check it.
Step7) Reboot, BUT, at the Restart icon. It warns me about window updated file. It says that I should install the updated file before restarting.
I notice that there is a yellow shield at the tray icon. It keeps updating files from microsoft.com (background task, I guess). Whenever I connect
to internet, this yellow shield always show up. Before I restart, I click to install the updated files (I don't know which file).
After restart successfully, run HijackThis again. Here is the log file.

Hi taangtawan. Your log is clean. Good job! How re things running? Any further problems?

The yellow shield and message about updates are due to the Windows Update notification. Anytime that you connect to the internet Windows Update will check to see if updates are available and download them inthe background. This will use up bandwidth (especially on a dialup connection) and might have been paart of the problem with IE and other programs not working properly (the computer was very busy downloading updates). Once any available updates are downloaded you will get the message that they should be installed. This is a normal windows process. If you do not want to see these messages or have windows automatically download the updates then you can turn these features off in the Security Center in Control Panel. You will tehn need to manually check for updates yourself. Microsoft usually comes out with new updates on the second Tuesday of each month unless there is a critical updates that must be installed immediately. Those can come out any time.

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
* CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
[/list]System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:and a good antivirus like the one you are currently using. It is critical to have both a firewall and an anti-virus application and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scanners
weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

Hi OT,
I've followed your insturction. However, the problem seems worse.
1) There is nothing error, until step System Restore will now be active again.
2) I installed SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard. After I restarted, it appeared
The instruction at 0x734305be referenced memory at 0x734305be. The memory could not be "written"
Click OK to terminate the program
Click Cancel to debug the program


It showed such message whenever I click some other programs, Netscape, WindowExplorer. I couldn't uninstall SpywareGuard (it said like SpywareGuard was running) I couldn't open SpywareGuard too. It showed the aboved message (0x734....) Thus, I use HijackThis, uncheck the related item (SpywareGuard), restart, uninstall Spyware software.

3) Things seem worse for me, so I made a decision to format my HDD and reinstall Windows, all other softwares.

It is clear now....after I used one afternoon to reinstall softwares. I'm sorry that I cannot follow up all your instruction. I'm really appreciated your suggestion. Things are now working fine for me. I'm using Internet Explorer to reply you message and would like to thank you a lotttttt.

Hi taangtawan. Well that is certainly one way to clean things up :thumbsup:

There must have been something in there that we could not find so reinstalling did clear that out.
