Hey all, I hope I've come to the right place. I wanted to report a pretty serious infection, to see if any of you are familiar.

It began with an inadvertent click to close an anti-spyware page on the internet - and I'd add that it looked exactly like the MS Security Center page. It took me to a separate page to buy protection, which I did not do. Now, every time I reboot I get a fake security center page trying to route me to the same anti-spyware company. In addition, I get MS firewall popups informing me that suspicious software has been blocked, and the only active button is "Enable Protection." I have Kaspersky antivirus and have run scans on some others, but it seems that the same problems reappear at start up. Lastly, it is becoming increasingly difficult to download any programs as I am either kicked off the page, or kicked out of the install wizard program itself.

Anyway, I've lost hope that I can kill this thing on my own, and would be very grateful for any pointers.

I just noticed that the HJT log in your first post is incomplete. The header contains important information that is often useful in solving these issues. Can you please do a fresh scan and post a new log with the header?

Hi Bugsmasher-

You have CoreGuard Antivirus 2009 installed. That is probably the fake MS Security Center window you saw. This is a rogue antispyware program. A rogue program is a program that isn't harmful directly, but uses deceptive advertising and false positive results to scare you into buying the registered version. This one is worse than most as it tries to trick you to uninstall legitmate antivirus software. We'll have to uninstall that.

I also noted that the last HJT scan was in Safe Mode. Unfortunately, this will not show all the malware that may be present and is not loading. Are you able to boot into normal mode at this time? If so, please reboot into normal mode to follow these instructions, except where indicated otherwise.


Let's start.

Step 1 - Scan with MBAM

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.

MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.


Step 2
Run HijackThis.
Click on Do a system scan only.

Place a checkmark next to these lines (if still present).

Then close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix Checked.


Step 3
Next, let's make sure we see hidden files. This will help us later.
Go to Start > My Computer
Go to Tools > Folder Options
Click on the View tab
Untick the following:
  • Hide extensions for known file types
  • Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
You will get a message warning you about showing protected operating system files, click Yes
Make sure this option is selected:
  • Show hidden files and folders
Click Apply and then click OK

Step 4 - delete files
Use Windows Explorer to find and delete these folders if still present:
C:\Program Files\Coreguard Antivirus 2009

As an example:
To delete C:\WINDOWS\badfile.dll
Double click the My Computer icon on your Desktop. Or click on the Windows KEY + E.
Double click on Local Disc (C:\)
Double click on the Windows folder,
Right click on badfile.dll and then from the menu that appears, click on Delete



Step 5
Please reply to this message. In it, please post the MBAM log from Step 1. Please also post a fresh HJT log from Windows in normal mode after you complete Step 3 above.
