I have Windows XP. I知 unable to use the internet with Internet Explorer or Firefox. I知 sending this from another computer, saving my logs on a USB memory stick.

The connection is not the problem. When I open Explorer, this is the message I get:

The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.

When I open Firefox, I don稚 even get that message. I get a blank white window. There is a navigation bar (the buttons on which are inactive), and that grey bar on the bottom that constantly says 電one. I was able to fix other problems I had using the anti-malware programs, but this problem persists.
(Other problems were a desktop that warned me that I had viruses and spyware, and a folder that kept opening spontaneously and repeatedly. I don稚 know if it痴 relevant.)

I ran multiple scans with MBAM and SAS, the first scan of each program found, quarantined, and removed a large number of items (I have logs available if you need them), but the second, third, and fourth scan found and claimed to remove the same item:

Trojan.Unclassified/UserInit-Fake
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\USERINIT.EXE

Please, let me know how I can fix this.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Anti-malware tools before the problem: McAfee
Anti-malware tools used attempting to fix the problem:
ATF Cleaner
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
SuperAntiSpyware Free Edition

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

R,
K
The only easy day was yesterday.

Hello. I am PropagandaPanda (Panda or PP for short), and I will be helping you.

I see evidence of a rootkit infection.

Posted ImageBackdoor Threat
I'm sorry to say that your computer is infected with one or more backdoor trojans.

This means that sensitive information could have been stolen. I would advise to change any passwords for any accounts that you have accessed with the infected computer using a clean computer ASAP. If you have used this computer for banking, I would strongly suggest that you report the possible stolen information. Please do not use the computer for any further transactions, or to enter any other information, if at all possible, until it is declared clean.

You may want to read this article on how to handle identity theft.
You may also want to read this article regarding preventing of identity theft.

This computer can still be cleaned, however, I cannot guarantee that it will be 100% safe even after disinfection.

Please read When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall.

I will proceed assuming you wish to disinfect. If you want to do a reinstall, reply back saying so.

Disable Realtime Protection
Antimalware programs can interfere with ComboFix and other tools we need to run. Please temporarily disable all realtime protections you have enabled. Refer to this page, if you are unsure how.

Download and Run ComboFix
Download Combofix by sUBs from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.
Link 1, Link 2, Link 3
  • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe and follow the prompts. If you are using Windows Vista, right click the icon and select "Run as Administrator". You will not recieve the prompts below if you are not using Windows XP. ComboFix will check to see if you have the Windows Recovery Console installed.
  • If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.
    Posted ImagePosted Image

  • When the Recovery Console has been installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.
    Posted Image
  • When finished, ComboFix will produce a report for you. Please post the contents of the log (C:\ComboFix.txt).
Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running. ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.

Download and Run Scan with GMER
We will use GMER to scan for rootkits.

Please download GMER to your desktop. Note that the file will be randomly named to prevent active malware from stopping the download.
  • Close all other open programs as there is a slight chance your computer will crash.
  • Double click the GMER program ******.exe. Your security programs may detect GMER's driver trying to load. Allow it.
  • You may see a warning saying "GMER has detected rootkit activity". If so, select NO.
  • Leaving the settings at default, click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click Save and save the log onto your desktop.
Please include the log in your next reply.

In your next reply include:
-the ComboFix log
-the GMER scan log

Please also tell me of any changes you have made to your computer since you started your topic.

With Regards,
The Panda

The link provided did not tell me how to disable McAfee On Access Scan, and so whenever I try to put combo fix onto the computer, it is automatically deleted as a Potentially Unwanted Program.

I have tried to figure out on my own how to disable it... unsuccessfully.

Until I can do that, I cannot run combofix or provide any logs.

And I have not changed anything about my computer since I posted the topic.

Hello Bob.

There are just so many versions of the AV products that we can't keep track of them :thumbup2: .

Right click on the VShield icon in the system tray and choose "Virus Scan Console".
Right click the entry for "Access Protection" and choose "Properties".
Un-check the option for "Prevent McAfee services from being stopped" and click OK.
The "Disable On-Access Scan" menu item should now be accessible when right-clicking the VShield icon.

Does this one appear to apply for your version?

With Regards,
The Panda

Yes it does... however, I am unable to uncheck the box. In fact, the properties menu for all tasks on the VirusScan Console won't let me click, check, or uncheck anything. Everything is grey, except for "OK" "Cancel" "Help"... and I can switch tabs... so I can SEE the various tabs... but I cannot change anything.

Hello.

Are you sure that this is an Administrator account? To check..
Click on your Start Menu -> Run -> Type: control userpasswords2 ->hit OK

Are you able to open that window, or do you recieve Access Denied?

Would you consider temporarily uninstalling McAfee?

With Regards,
The Panda

I was able to open the window. I uninstalled McAfee... I ran combo fix... then I ran GMER.... now I can't get onto my computer. The screen that says "welcome", where I'm supposed to click the user name to log on.... I click my user name and the log on sound plays... immediately followed by the log off music, and it says "logging off" right under the username. I am able to shut down my computer from that screen, but I cannot get to my desktop.

Hello.

It looks like the Userinit file was damaged. Let's try restoring the registry first.

[color=purple]Restore from ERUNT Backup Created by ComboFix
Shutdown your computer. Start it again.
After hearing the beep, tap the F8 key repeatitively until you see the boot selection screen.
Use the arrow keys to select "Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" and hit Enter.
You will be asked which installation you want to log into. This is usually 1 - C:\WINDOWS. Type 1 followed by Enter.
Type the following without quotes followed by Enter: "cd erdnt\subs"
Type the following without quotes followed by Enter: "batch erdnt.con"
You should see messages indicating that files are being copied. This may take a moment.
Type the following without quotes followed by Enter: "exit"

Allow your computer to restart normally.

Tell me if you can log on now.

With Regards,
The Panda

I do not have the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console option. Though my computer does connect to the internet, the inability to actually use the internet has been the problem from the start, which probably explains why I couldn't download the recovery console.

I did manage to get the log from combo fix before I ran GMER.

Here it is:

Hello.

Let's try this then.

Using a working computer:

Using a working computer:

Download Recovery Console Image RC.iso to your desktop.
Burn the iso file as a image to a blank CD. Refer to this guide, if needed, on burning iso images.

Turn on the damaged computer and place the Recovery Console disk in. Turn off the computer.
Turn on the computer again and boot from the CD.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.

At the recovery console prompt, type the following lines one by one, followed by Enter.

cd erdnt\subs
batch erdnt.con
exit

Tell me if you can boot now.

The registry is likely not the problem, but I want to try first.

With Regards,
The Panda

Hello.

Boot into the Recovery console again.

At the prompt, type the following lines one by one, followed by Enter.

set nocopyprompt = true
copy "c:\windows\system32\winlogon.exe" "c:\windows\system32\winlogon.exe.bak"
copy "c:\windows\system32\dllcache\winlogon.exe" "c:\windows\system32\winlogon.exe"
copy "c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe" "c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe.bak"
copy "c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\dd9ab5193501484cf5e6884fa1d22f9e\userinit.exe" "c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe"
copy "c:\windows\system32\termsrv.dll" "c:\windows\system32\termsrv.dll.bak"
copy "c:\windows\system32\dllcache\termsrv.dll" "c:\windows\system32\termsrv.dll"
exit

You should recieve a "1 file copied" message after each file.

Tell me how it goes.

With Regards,
The Panda

After I type

set nocopyprompt = true

I get a message that says: "The SET command is currently disabled. The SET command is an optional Recovery Console command that can only be enabled by using the the Security Configuration and Analysis snap-in."

A question for you... in those lines beginning with copy... am I supposed to use the quotation marks?
