No sound/audio

I just had my computer reformatted after installing windows xp there is no sound coming out of the speakers.
When i tried adjusting the volume control but it appear on the systems tray.
This is the message that comes out :
"There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices, go to Control Panel, click Printers & Other Hardware, and then click Add Hardware."

Please help.
