Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results, click no to the Optional_Scan
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet. You can find information on A/V control HERE

Thank you so much for responding to my post and sorry for not replying right away. I'm confuse on how dds work. I disabled my AVG 8 and my firewall and i still can't open the dds file. I would click run and it would pop up for a split second and that would be it.

Hello ep3user,

Since you can't get DDS to run, please try this:

Download RSIT by random/random and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You will need to run this tool while connected to the Internet so it can download HijackThis if it is not located on your system. If you get a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding Rist attempting to contact the Internet, please allow the connection.
  • Close all applications and windows so that you have nothing open and are at your Desktop.
  • Double-click on RSIT.exe to start the program.
  • If using Windows Vista, be sure to Run As Administrator.
  • Click Continue after reading the disclaimer screen.
  • Leave the drop down box set to default: "List/folders created or modified in the last 1 month (30 days).
  • When the scan is complete, a text file named log.txt will automatically open in Notepad.
  • Copy and paste that log in your next response.
  • If you cannot get RSIT to run, please post back and I'll provide further instructions.

Hello ep3user.

Before we proceed to attempt to remove malware, un-install LimeWire and BitTorrent and any other peer-to-peer filesharing app. Otherwise, those apps will leave doors open for other malware to enter.

I do not recommend the use of peer-to-peer filesharing apps since such filesharing/downloading from unknown sources is one of the leading causes of transmission of malware.
"File-Sharing, otherwise known as Peer To Peer" and "Risks of File-Sharing Technology."

Good & bad P2P Programs

Your MBAM 's definitions are out-of-date and the version is old as well!
Start your MBAM.
Click the Settings Tab. Make sure all option lines have a checkmark.
Click the Update tab. Press the "Check for Updates" button.
At this time, the current definitions are # 2139 or later. The latest program version is 1.36 (released April 6)

Wait for the update process to fully complete.

When done, click the Scanner tab.
Do a Quick Scan.

When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.

Download to your Desktop FixPolicies.exe, by Bill Castner, MS-MVP, a self-extracting ZIP archive from
>>> here <<<
  • Double-click FixPolicies.exe.
  • Click the "Install" button on the bottom toolbar of the box that will open.
  • The program will create a new Folder called FixPolicies.
  • Double-click to Open the new Folder, and then double-click the file within: Fix_Policies.cmd.
  • A black box will briefly appear and then close.
  • This fix may prove temporary. Active malware may revert these changes at your next startup. You can safely run the utility again.
Next, Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

If you have a prior copy of Combofix, delete it now !

Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your Desktop.

* IMPORTANT !!! SAVE AS Combo-Fix.exe to your Desktop
If your I.E. browser shows a warning message at the top, do a Right-Click on the bar and select Download, saving it to the Desktop.
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

  • Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

Please watch Combofix as it runs, as you may see messages which require your response, or the pressing of OK button.

IF you should see a message like this:
Posted Image
then, be sure to write down fully and also copy that into your next reply here and then await for my response.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
-------------------------------------------------------

A caution - Do not run Combofix more than once.
Do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed, as this may cause the process to stall or your computer to lock.

The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled.
If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop.
Even when ComboFix appears to be doing nothing, look at your Drive light.
If it is flashing, Combofix is still at work.
=

RE-Enable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications.

Using My Computer {Windows Explorer} locate your Hijackthis located here
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe
Do a RIGHT-Click on HijackThis.exe and select Rename
then Rename it to BRAVO.exe

Now, close Windows Explorer and any open windows including your browsers.
Start Bravo and do a Scan and Save log.

Reply with copy of the new MBAM scan log
and the C:\Combofix.txt
and the new Hijackthis log
and tell me, How is your system now ?

Mbam says update failed and to make sure it is connected to the internet but my internet is working fine. Also it takes at least a minute or so to load or boot after turning on my computer( I'm assuming that's called boot time, sorry for my lack of knowledge).

We can take a look later on about the startup apps and see if it is related to malware or the infections.
For now, go to Control Panel > Add-or-Remove Programs.

Then, Please download & save Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from

Please advise which firewall you are running. And turn it back on. We do not want to be without it, unless we have an excellent reason.

Now then, let us hold off on the new MBAM.

If you have any more blockage when attempting to download tools on this system ....see about using another pc, do the downloads, save/copy to CD/DVD/ or a known unused/clean USB flash drive, then copy to the Desktop of the problem system....then run the tools from the Desktop. ok?

Skip the MBAM step and proceed forth with the Fixpolicies and others I listed before.

Place your USB flash drives in-place so that some of these programs will be able to find them.

I'm going to have you get and run two utilities.
The first stops automatic use of the AutoRun feature of XP. The second will write to any connected devices a Read-only, System protected Autorun.inf file on all of your hard drives, and all connected removable storage devices.

Download and Install Microsoft's TweakUI:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa...ppowertoys.mspx
Obtain and install TweakUI (part of the PowerToys for Windows XP package), and then start TweakUI.
Expand the My Computer branch, then the AutoPlay branch, and then select Drives.
Turn off the checkbox next to every drive letter to disable AutoPlay -- except your CD/DVD drive letters.

Download and run "Flash Drive Disinfector" by sUBs. It will do a cleanup of removable storage devices, and write a protected Autorun.inf file to help prevent re-infection.

There is no GUI interface or log file produced.

Please download DrWeb-CureIt & save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.

Reboot your computer in "SAFE MODE" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with DrWeb-CureIt as follows:
  • Double-click on cureit.exe to start the program. An "Express Scan of your PC" notice will appear.
  • Under "Start the Express Scan Now", Click "OK" to start. This is a short scan that will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the Yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it.
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
  • Choose the "Scan tab" and UNcheck "Heuristic analysis"
  • Back at the main window, click "Select drives" (a red dot will show which drives have been chosen)
  • Then click the "Start/Stop Scanning" button (green arrow on the right) and the scan will start.
  • When done, a message will be displayed at the bottom advising if any viruses were found.
  • Click "Yes to all" if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can see the icon next to the files found. If so, click it, then click the next icon right below and select "Move incurable". (This will move it to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if it can't be cured)
  • Next, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list.
  • Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.
  • Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.
  • Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web in your next reply. (You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report)

This system has an old version of Java Run-time.

Uninstall jre1.6 (or any earlier) + any other (JRE Runtime Environment ) Sun Java package via Add/Remove Programs.
If you see any other Java versions there,
such as
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
Java SE Runtime Environment
Java 6

uninstall all of them. After uninstalling, reboot if directed to do so.

In Windows Explorer, navigate to and delete C:\Program Files\Java <=this folder, if found.Do NOT delete C:\Program Files\JavaVM <=this folder, if found!
Open an IE window and go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
> In top of the page (second in the list), click on the Download button to the right of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 14
> If Information Bar pop-ups up, right-click on it and say it's OK to display the blocked content; You do not have to install the Java Web Start ActiveX Control
> Accept the license agreement
> Click on Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and Save the file to your desktop; do not Run it.

When the download is complete, close all browser windows and double-click on the saved file to install the update.
  • Tip: Choose Custom install to select only the part(s) you need/want.
Delete the downloaded installation file after completing the above procedure and reboot if prompted to do so.

If you were /not/ prompted to reboot, please do so now.

To test your Java Run-time, you may go to this page http://www.javatester.org/version.html
When all is well, you should see Java Version: 1.6.0_14 from Sun Microsystems Inc.

Click the Update tab. Press the "Check for Updates" button.
At this time, the current definitions are # 2195 or later. The latest program version is 1.37 (released May 26)

When done, click the Scanner tab.
Do a Quick Scan.

Posted ImageWhen the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

Make sure that all tagged line items are checked, and click Remove Selected.

When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.

Start your AVG antivirus. Start the update process. Advise me if that works !

Reply with copy of the DrWeb-CureIt report,
Goored.txt
