Hello,

I have been attempting to clean a computer which appears to have been infected with vundo, zlob, ertfor and bho. After infection, Mcafee was turned off, the regedit program was disabled, system restore was disabled and we saw a continual loading of new pages through Internet Explorer. I used Mcafee antivirus, Spy Bot Search and Destroy, Ad aware and all failed to help. Macafee found trojans, but was unable to remove them. I then Malwarebytes which cleaned the system up, removed all viruses it found. I was able to get in to regedit again, System restore worked again, etc. All of the above were unable to find any remnants of the virus9es). After a couple of days, new tabs started being opened up in Explorer again, so something else is still lurking around. I ran Malwarebytes again this morning and it found the following:

Memory Modules Infected:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\__c00D5FFF.dat (Trojan.Agent) -> Delete on reboot.

Registry Keys Infected:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\__c00d5fff (Trojan.Vundo) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

Registry Values Infected:
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\a00f971bf9a.exe (Trojan.Agent) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

Registry Data Items Infected:
(No malicious items detected)

Folders Infected:
(No malicious items detected)

Files Infected:
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\_A00F971BF9A.exe (Trojan.Agent) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\__c00D5FFF.dat (Trojan.Vundo) -> Delete on reboot.

So, asking for some help from those more knowledgeable than me, something seems to still be lurking and the tools are unable to fully removed it.

Here is the DDS log:

It does not appear that there are any bad things still lurking around.

But, how ddo you know when everything is gone? I used Mcafee, Spybot, adaware, kasparasky, Spy hunter, vundo fix, virtumundobegone and several others that I am sure i have forgotten in addition to the tools that you pointed to. Each tool found bad files, quarantined or deleted them and pronounced everything safe. How do you truly know that all bad files are gone?

In any case, I do appreaciate the help to date and hope that the pc is truly clean at this point.

Your computer is really good to go.. I hope you're not paranoid..

Since you insist lets do another scan...

Please do this step before you sleep or when you don't use the computer as it will take quite a while..

Please run the Kaspersky Online Scanner

In Microsoft Windows Vista, you must open the Web browser using the Run as Administrator command. From the Desktop right click the icon to open the browser and choose Run as Administrator.

  • Click on SCAN NOW
  • Click Accept.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded locate the Scan Settings and have it scan My Computer.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it finish.

When the scan is done, in the Scan is complete window, any infection is displayed.
There is no option to clean/disinfect, however, we need to analyze the information on the report.

To obtain the report:
Click on: Save Report As
  • Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop.
  • In the File name area use KScan, or something similar.
  • In Save as type: click the drop arrow and select: Text file [*.txt]
  • Then, click: Save
Posted Image

Copy and paste the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in your next reply.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Keep calm, make it simple, use your brain, don't freak out, and you'll be just fine..

Looks like something is still hanging around:

KASPERSKY ONLINE SCANNER 7.0 REPORT
Friday, May 1, 2009
Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (build 2600)
Kaspersky Online Scanner version: 7.0.26.13
Program database last update: Friday, May 01, 2009 23:39:41
Records in database: 2118498
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Scan settings:
Scan using the following database: extended
Scan archives: yes
Scan mail databases: yes

Scan area - Folder:

Scan statistics:
Files scanned: 191037
Threat name: 1
Infected objects: 0
Suspicious objects: 3
Duration of the scan: 01:37:49

File name / Threat name / Threats count
C:\Documents and Settings\Bob Hodge\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\archive.pst Suspicious: Trojan-Spy.HTML.Fraud.gen 3

The selected area was scanned.

My question in my earlier post was not a matter of paranoia, it was more a question of how doe sone know when a computer is clean? I've used numerous tools and each seem to find something different. As I said, how does a person know when to stop? Even in this case, it seemed that you felt the computer was clean and Kaspersky seems to find something else. That is a good example of what I was asking about.
